Zakk handled this perfectly. He obviously cares about the subject and he respects Phil enough to say 'wtf man, you're better than that' instead of making excuses for him. And he still came with love and gentleness. That's a real friend.

In the same interview with Eddie Trunk he also stated that he kissed and hugged Doug Pinnick from Kings X at that same Dimebash. If ya dont know, Mr Pinnick is a GAY BLACK man. Ive also had the opportunity to hang with Phil and different phases in his career ie Pantera, Down, Superjoint after shows wjere there were non whites and he was just as embracing and cool with them as he was with us caucasian folk. I do believe he made an asshole move in response to assholes heckling for which he has faced the consequences. He also made the point that Scott Ian lambasted him for doing that but also he himself is in a band (SOD) that has classic songs like Speak English or Die and Fuck the Middle East. Say what you will that it may be in gest but still cant go throwing the PC ax at people when youre a Jew playing songs titled as such. Btw Phil also mentioned he did contribute money to the Anti Defamation League before Mr Ian suggested it.

This was probably the most fair appraisal of the incident from a fellow musician. He didn't jump on the bandwagon and degrade Phil. He put thought into the fact that Phil is a decent guy and the situation went in a shitty direction. He backs up the real Phil and says that the whole thing just sucks. Which it does. I think Phil would agree with how Zakk handled this question. Personally, I am sick and tired of people like Phil getting nailed to the cross over 20 seconds of their life versus the last 20 years of love and support they bring to the community. The funny thing is that this is probably one of the more tame things Phil has done to fuck with someone! He used to just beat people's asses. Gotta love these modern hyper-sensitive losers out to ruin everyone's good time.

I don't think he really hesitates for the sake of trying to come up with a convincing story. I feel it's more like he's tired of hearing the same crap from people. He has to walk on eggshells and think about what he's going to say because of the way people perceive him or the way SJWs are taking over the airwaves. Any little miss communication or slip of the tongue and you have an entire lynch mob after you. - I'm in no way defending the way he acted that night, it was immature and un called for, but at the same time I respect him for telling everyone what really happened that night instead of just staying quiet. not many artists would do that.

I have never seen this before now. and forgot about the subject. But i am a huge fan of Zakk and happy to see he was diplomatic about this and didn't waste time kissing Phil's ass by saying , "oh he was just joking cut him some slack." Phil had to take his medicine and apologize. It's over. Next time he will keep that shit between himself and his friends, not in public.

I can't find it right now, but there is a video where Phil explains why he shouted "white power". He claims that people have been accusing him of being racist prior, so he decided to run with it. Doug pinnick, from King's X, (a gay black man) kissed him on the lips and told him that he tasted good. He was drinking white wine. As a joke, (not a very good on) Phil told him that it must have been "all that white power hahaha". He was addressing what Robb Flynn, from Machine head, said in an interview that Phil said some racist things backstage (Flynn wasn't even there to see it first hand). Had nothing to do with what happened onstage, you took two separate stories and put them together.

Man, let everybody say what they want. All directions. Encourage fighting if offended. Instead news gets ahold of it. Makes it worse for everybody. I grew up in Fort Worth texas during the late eighties and Pantera would play a little dive bar called Joe's Garage every Saturday...Lots of metal heads there and very few skinheads...Although Phil was dating a skinhead chick named "Honey" at the time but she was a traditional skin...Meaning she was a working class chick, proud of her race...Nothing Nazi about that....

I too grew up in DFW at that time. Was not a Pantera fan. But those guys had every Titty dancer in DFW at their their shows. Gotta give them respect for what they became. Huge change from what they were. Vinny RIP.

I understand Pantera / Phil fans are loyal. It's cool -- I'm a fan myself. I also understand he might not be a "racist". But what he did was dumb and it was racist. That's disappointing. I'm a die-hard Pantera fan born in the 80s raised up on Pantera..... I got my CFH tattoo....Phil Anselmo was like a superhero to me growing up..... He was the sole reason that made White boys hard in the 90s..... Never did he come across as a racist....only to be proud of your race.... I've been digging to see if I could find anything linking Dimebag and Vinnie to the whole white supremacy thing, but the only link was Phil, and they didn't seem to want anything to do with him after Pantera split. Then again, there are a LOT of folks in the metal community that have dubbed him as a jackass, so it's no surprise he'd be a raging racist, too.

Years have passed and now Panther's concerts have been cancelled, with at least two shows in Germany being cancelled by the orgs. The reasons for the cancellations are not given, but the roots lie in this history.

This troubles me, this whole situation. For one, i know Phil is not a Nazi or a racist, but it was a really stupid thing to do. This culture of fingerpointing is a big issue too, but i think he was drunk and did something stupid. He's always done that. Ive seen him go off onstage about this and that, but hes just being Phil. He picked the wrong thing to do this time and suffered for it, but I think we all know in this community that Phil isn't like that. I remember he used to yell to the crowd "SMOKE ACID!" after shows too. Did we listen to him then? Has anyone ever smoked acid? Thats just Phil. Give the guy a break already.

There was a bunch of hecklers in the crowd I think were calling Phil a racist and because he was sick of the bullshit he wanted to aggravate them even more so he did the Hitler Salute. Unfortunately they took this out of context and blasted him as a real racist. Not a smart move on Phil's part being well known but I think he just doesn't give a shit at times lol!

If you genuinely believe that story of Phil's then you are an absolute moron. Remember how before that he said it was just a joke about there being white wine backstage? Also this is far from the first time he's done it. Most people assumed he'd grown out of this shit. I don't think he's racist I just think he's a fucking idiot who's rotted his brain with heavy drug use over the years and doesn't realise what he's doing half the time. A lot of the people defending him clearly are racist though.

Y'all "white pride" dudes need to get your facts straight. Obviously there's nothing wrong with being proud with your heritage, but Phil went beyond that by doing a nazi salute. A NAZI SALUTE, folks. That's not white pride- it's white supremacy. And Zak isn't "bashing" Phil- he's just a bit disappointed. Zak is saying he thinks Phil's a nice guy, just that he disagrees with what Phil did. What Phil did was wrong- hands down. The real debate should be how serious was he about it, was he just being a typical rambling drunk, etc. And I think he wasn't serious about it, given his apology. But apologies don't totally erase deeds, and his actions were wrong. So I give Phil credit for apologizing, and I still love his work as a musician, but y'all got your heads up your asses if you think nazi salutes are okay.
