Everyone seems to be giving away their schefflera plants. I get tons of messages saying, "my so-and-so just gifted me this plant... it's 30 years old and I don't know what to do" yada yada... well here's a video on how to take care of it!

Guys, if you have no clue what's wrong with your plant, consider watching this video. If these are things that do not occur to you, then throw the whole plant away, because you are not a good plant parent (jk ...sort of)

I made a dieffenbachia video about 7 months ago and you guys were soooooo mad that I didn't show how I actually harvested the babies. I went and put all this effort into making a revised, and improved, version and you didn't even bother to watch it (hmph!!!). If you want to give me a pat on the back, peep my improved video!

Hey, leaves will rot if they're in water. Keep water level limited to where only roots will develop. Healthy rhizomes (that potato-looking thingy) should be whitish in color. The greenish tinge is probably the beginning of mold. Repotting the developed ones in soil after water propagation is another struggle - I've had only 3 out of 5 survive in soil afterwards. Good luck!

Thank you Suzy! Eek on the mold :(, I keep the water so high, because I've forgotten about cuttings sitting in water so long that the water eventually evaporated (irresponsible of me, I know) lol. I really should just keep a maximum of maybe 10 cuttings, so that its easier to monitor the water level. Thanks for the note, hopefully I will have some news to share regarding these ZZ petioles in my next random update video (fingers crossed)!

I made around 20 of single leaf cuttings at the starting of this year and they all have been established in soil and thrown up new shoots, so here are a couple of things I did and it might help you as well, first off your water level was too high the leaves should not be touching the water otherwise they would eventually rot. Also the green thing on the tubers was probably mold as the zz tubers even when exposed to light do not become photosynthetic, only thing to prevent that would be to change water regularly. Lastly I would recommend to pot the leaf in cocopeat as soon as it gives off a few thin roots, although none of mine got rotten but the ones that were potted earlier did better and gave better shoots.

That’s amazing to hear! I knew I was probably doing a bunch of things wrong 🤣. Maybe the 1 that I had take root could have grown to be something by now, but I just gave up and tossed them all. I also had fungus gnats crawling all over every one of the pots, so I got grossed out and tossed them. If ever I get tempted to try again, I’ll be sure to use much less water. Thanks for sharing your experience with the cuttings! Earlier this year I repotted and divided the mama plant. I got 4 or 5 new plants from them and was able to give a few away to my neighbor.

Here's what I don't understand. I have also tried to propagate the ZZ plant twice. When the tuber forms from the petiole and grows roots, there has to be photosynthesis as well which is done by the leaf. If the leaf rots and dies there's nothing contributing to photosynthesis. This is what confuses me. Do all of the leaves die when propagating, or do occasionally (like you showed) some leaves stay green and the plant grows? I feel like in time, the ones that have the leaves rot will grow. Eventually you'll see a shoot or two emerging from the soil. I have yet to confirm this though because I got impatient and ripped the tuber out of the soil thinking it was a failure. I don't think you're losing your green thumb at all. It's just a strange plant to propagate. ZZ are such slow growers so patience is key I feel.

Hi Brandon! Thanks for the note :). I'm glad I'm not the only one struggling with the propagation of this plant. So apparently, it is really challenging to propagate this in water and has a way higher success propagating by division. But my current ZZs are so huge that I will make a mess in my living room if I try to repot them... maybe next summer. I will hopefully have an update or some activity going on with the 1 green leaf I have in my next random updates video. I did take the other cuttings that still had some green in them and potted them in soil - hopefully those will have some activity too (hopefully lol)...

My zz is from clippings of stems the leaves method doent work for me. I put the stem in water. No pests on any of my plants bcus I mist with neem and water. You are using to much water and the ball is normal. Its what makes the rhizomes. Its ready to plant. You gotta water more bcus its used to water right now. Once it gets rooted it will take off. It will grow slow bcus its a creeper. I always do the stem cutting just dont use to much water and only top off when needed.

You're right, I do have too much water in my jars lol... I get paranoid that they'll dry out, because I've forgotten about some clippings in the past and had the roots dry out (bad plant mama lol). I have since transferred some of the clippings to the same pot of dirt that I had the other dried leaves with rhizomes and noticed that they were still there and with roots! I am hoping that come spring, they will surprise us :)

Question my ZZ flowered recently too so I repotted it but I left that flower on! Should I have cut it off??? It didn’t seem like it should come off for some reason
@Botanibabies
@Botanibabies 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sasha! No harm in leaving the flower on. However, it will eventually shrivel up and wilt. You’ll want to take it off at that point since it may rot. But even if you don’t take it off at that point it won’t harm the plant, it’ll just look gross 😬 lol. Good luck with your plant! Hope it’ll give off new shoot soon!

It was a total failure, unfortunately. The petioles all turned brown and crispy, but I am still holding out hope that something will come of it this spring. Out of all those petioles, only 1 stayed green and it’s still alive, but no activity 😢
