Honestly this whole self-optimization and productivity thing became somwewhat predatory. Sure you can optimize a few things about yourself and maybe even improve how you learn and retain knowledge. However this whole community that seems to be obsessed with numbers (read x books a week, learn to read x words a minute, type faster, run faster, think faster,...) just seems borderline masturbatory or even predatory (depending on you writing or reading the self-help book). I was entrenched in that community for a while but honestly, it's bullshit. Today I am more about slow and deliberate learning. One thing I took from my first Bachelor degree was that I learned a lot of stuff last minute, just to pass the test. Now, 15 years later, I have lost A LOT of the stuff I learned back then. Just being able to consume a lot of knowledge isn't useful in itself. Why would you do that? If you are eager to learn something, really learn, you need to ruminate about it and come back to the topic periodically. One inconvenient truth none of those self-help gurus want to tell you is that learning actually takes mental effort and, even more important, time. Your brain actually needs some time to incorporate knowledge and build the necessary neural pathways to retain that knowledge. Just being able to consume a book in half a day is worth nothing by itself.

Exacly. Thanks for the great comment! This really sums it up perfectly: "Your brain actually needs some time to incorporate knowledge and build the necessary neural pathways to retain that knowledge". We should measure success not merely by numbers (x books, y amount of money), but by how much positive impact these things have on our life.

Nice, you basically confirmed the similar thoughs I've also had about dating. Especially about how things will be easier with the right person, the conflicts will also be easier to resolve and they wont be as big. When it comes to planning dates and expectations. As a guy it's to plan something you'd like to do to see if she's into the same things. If she's not it's okay, y'all could still have other things in common or you both should move on. It's okay to have hope for a positive outcome like both of you being compatible. Just stay grounded as well and realize it's also okay if both of you aren't compatible. You just saved each other from wasting time and unnecessary energy. Now you can continue to find that compatible person. Kinda have to accept and expect the negatives of dating. Like take them at face value or see them as something positive.
@robertcurpan73822 ай бұрын
Exactly. That's a great outlook. The idea is to take out any potential blockers when it comes to communicating and stuff. The date is really just an opportunity to get to know each other and that is what matters ultimately. And I love this "stoic" approach where you take the other person as it is. If you two are compatible and get along well, great. If not, it's okay to move on. When you're in a relationship with someone who you know is great, then it's worth trying to work out misunderstandings and stuff. Communication is key after all. But during the first few dates, if you start seeing red flags, there's no point in trying to fix them or to change the other person because it's not going to happen. Thanks for the input man. Good luck!

Good tips, but planning everything is not exciting, specially if you have ADHD or anxiety. And making decisions spend men's energy too, cause men are human beings too, you know? As I said, good tips, but just be cautious about creating/proliferating myths that will turn in expectations for them, cause when that expectations will not be met, and eventually will not, they'll act as if we are at fault and made something wrong, even if it is not true. Another thing: A lot of women spent the last decades saying how they don't want to be put on gender roles. It seems fair that people defend gender roles for us but not for them?
@robertcurpan73822 ай бұрын
Thanks for the input man! I completely agree, being the only one who does the planning can be stressful and feel like a burden over the long term. But you don't have to do it alone after a certain point. I prefer to do this in the beginning, for the first few dates you know? After a while, it would actually be selfish of us to not ask for opinions or let the other person choose some activities that she wants to do. In time, if things go well, she'll be more than eager to participate in decision making and planning exciting things to do. So yeah, I would say that planning everything for the first few dates helps a lot in creating a connection more easily. If you like her, you'd want to have the best possible date for both of you, not just for her. But after that, you're going to do these things as a team. And you shouldn't have to ask her to participate. If she's a good person and she likes you, it will be her idea. If she expects you to do EVERYTHING after a few weeks of dating, maybe she's not the one and you're better off alone or with somebody else.
@MadSKWIREL2 ай бұрын
Why would I give up on planning out the great date in advance? I don't know, you can get stressed a lot at work and distracted by other issues. Also the more time passes, the more difficult it becomes to plan some new interesting experience, because you've tried a lot of stuff together already.
@robertcurpan73822 ай бұрын
Thanks for the input bro! I agree, it can be stressful, but you have to go through this only for the first few dates, you know? It will help to ease the interaction between you. If things go well, you'll make decisions together because she will also want to do specific things that she likes. And you don't have to come up with something new every time you go out. Nobody expects that... if you have a few options that you can cycle through over time, it's perfect. For example, one week you can go to a restaurant, the following you can watch a movie together at home, the next one you go walking in the park or something. Then rinse and repeat. Just make sure to not fall into the complacency trap of doing the same one thing over and over again (like every date becomes watching neflix and eating chips at home). Complacency will hurt the relationship and it will also hurt you. But like I said, if she's a good person, she'll be more than eager to suggest some cool activities as well.
