Top down management has destroyed companies. This ridiculous view that the top can see everything doesn't work for a simple reason that most of the people at the top are naive to the technology etc at the bottom and the relationship between the company and the customer.

To me, McKinsey's hiring process looks like it assumes that human beings can not learn. Some are gifted, and that's what we want. Is that true?
@arsal.a15 күн бұрын
Scientists informed this entire process but forgot it themselves along the way because all they communicate with are scientists. Stretch the process, add a lot more rigour and evidence, and the McKinsey process becomes the standard scientific process.

Here is an AI platform designed specifically to improve strategy consulting. It does about 75% of what a McKinsey, Bain, or BCG does in an extensive/expensive consulting engagement and does it in 90% less time. This will likely arm small to midsized consultants (and companies) with the data collection and analysis tools that the big houses (McKinsey, BCG, and Bain) have used and do it fast: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iJ-FqM2TqcDDlIk.htmlsi=Qj7BasEBucdOMi2D

Wow I find this so fascinating. A friend's son started recently at McKinsey and I think he is on his way to some pretty amazing things in life and ultimately wants to end up in start ups in Silicon Valley - what a surprise right?! I think he will succeed - he's truly brilliant. I enjoyed this conversation so much. Thank you!

all I know is that management is the only consulting jig where you hire consultants with the least experience possible doing the actual thing you're hiring them to consult on. Look it's one thing if you're hiring them to take the blame for your plan to cut workers and pay to bump up the stock price, that's lame but that's actually understandable and everyone involved is getting what they expect... but actually hiring them to give real advice? I've no clue...

The greatest misconception for me was that this work is about working with successful entrepreneurs so you could learn a ton for yourself, while in reality you end up with corporate Bills and Joes who just want to get a good performance assessment so they could climb rheir corporate ladders further and pay off their mortgages. And in the process you build their case for repetetive restructing of departments while infusing "digital" and AI phrases to impress their bosses, not inventing new iPhone.. Yep, not that exciting as I naively expected..

We had McKinsey consultants restructure the dev delivery system in a company I worked at. They started off by laying off all British and American developers and moving everything offshore. All that remained were BA and Product Owners who would draw up spec and liase between the business and the devs. None of the McKinsey Consultants had ever worked in a dev team. The results were horrific. Dev times which had previously been a few weeks to do something started to become months. Worst part was the sheer level of technical debt that started to grow and was never addressed as the McKinsey consultants didn't know they had to deal with technical debt so didnt write it in to their processes. The company for the next few years made record profits due to the lowered wage bill. However now the company is screwed. The company is no longer a big player in its market as it is totally unable to develop new products etc.

As someone who transitioned from freelancing to working in a small team, I can relate to the challenges and the necessity to be Jack of all trades. Your point about the abundance of resources in a large consulting firm is interesting. With the advent of various AI tools, it suddenly feels as though I have a team ten times larger at my command, with tenfold the talent and resources. It's as if I now have access to data scientists, strategists, designers, and every kind of expert unferbthe sun that would have been unaffordable just a few years ago.
