Terrific Art teacher, I remember that book. Not sure if there was another such book called the Gift of the Deer. There were a number. I am dyslexic , so it was hard for me to read. Owen Gromme , who also was a friend of Robert Batemans later in Batemans life, was the one who taught me, when Owen would catch me skipping school.. After my art supplies, years of sketch books and notes in my words, of reading., some paintings, were stolen, I could no longer afford to pay for my college education. Therefore, art had been put aside. Raising a Child, no car, time spent by bus, chores, not much time for a lot of any art. Now I am 75, and back in it, still on low income. Question: I had tried to make black and white prints, to make post cards but sturdier i was using Krylon Spry Adhesive and they changed the formula. It bleed through my prints, and ends up I can peal the print Right off. it never sticks like they use to. I tried a few others, and since the Pandemic , they too did something. If I use Elmer Glue it makes the outer edges look sloppy. I can not find places near to make prints, nor really afford. DO YOU KNOW WHAT BRAND OF SPRAY I SHOULD USE? I am 75 years old, and a tribute to OWEN Gromme , I want to fill the Promise I made, and for the help. Being dyslexic as a child in the 50-60's was not easy, Teachers were just as bad , taking pleasure to embarrass, which end with constant teas at school and at recess, then go home and get almost same treatment. I may be 75, but I do not feel it, nor act, nor dress like I am , nor on a limited budget. I would do oils, but my studio is also where I sleep. Perhaps this summer. I thought of doing 8x 10 pre treated flat board canvas, and sell those, to perhaps afford to have prints made. Just to gain the exposure. I did meet Robert Bateman, without knowing who he was . or that I was when he caught me sketching, in the park he bought and donated to Toronto ,Canada. He really liked my work, and said he rarely seen females doing much art work in wildlife. I am trying to catch up with time missed. I am mainly doing birds in my state. including some of the Plants, Trillium, dog tooth violets. fire pinks, add a few insects or a toad, without taking away the main topic the bird. There are about 344 birds seen in my state. Did enjoy your Pod Cast. Thank you.

The process looks so seamless! I'm kinda curious to know if the paint roller leaves any air bubbles after the varnish dries ?

I find I've got to add two coats. First coat soaks in and the second coat finishes it. I use matt canvas which is probably why the first coat gets absorbed. The two coat finish of satin I use looks flawless when it dries. Hope this helps.

@@DesMcCaffrey Very cool. I want to try some one day. Am currently focussed on a show for the Louisiana Whooping crane reintroduction project, (an exhibit with the State dept of Wildlife and fisheries)so am painting W.cranes like crazy, but am secretly much more drawn to big ungulates like you do. Once this show is out of the way, will work on big mammals again. I look up to you. Thank you for posting your art and life as a wildlife artist. Truly inspiring!

Hello again Des, I was just wondering what that black pencil tool was that you use to draw in the shapes before you add the wash. The wash does not seem too smear it. Is it charcoal or a grease pencil? Thanks. 😊🫎 fan of mooses! Haha
@DesMcCaffrey11 ай бұрын
Hello, sorry for the late reply! I pencil it on first then use black or sepia fluid acrylic paint to lock in the drawing. Then wash away. 😊
@claires910011 ай бұрын
@@DesMcCaffrey Ok thank you. So then the wash is just a thin coat of paint (oil paint ) with solvent, like say, Gamsol? Thanks. Your painting is so beautiful. Reminds me of Alberta.
