Just stumbled across this video when looking up videos on Rhodes. This reminds me of a similar location I found on the other side of the island (Faliraki) lots of bunkers and tunnels heading into the hillside. There is a lot of WWII history to be found on Rhodes. Great video.

@@Urbexy Thanks. Some ten years ago I visited those hillside Faliraki bunkers. They were built during the 1974 Cyprus crisis. Ten years ago they were half full of clay. But still an interesting location.

@@Helsinkipop Thank you for the follow-up information. I believe it was 2000 when I visited and it was literally the last day of the trip when we decided to climb up to see the view. We had no idea there was anything up there until we arrived at the top. Very interesting place. I really wish I had a camera with me. No graffiti and it all looked in pretty good shape.

At least the FV 432 would not melt and/or catch fire like a barrel of thermite when hit with ordnance. I wonder at the US decision to go with aluminum alloy for M113 hulls? There is footage online of an Iraqi T62 suddenly going away after being hit by a shell fired from a Challenger tank fwiw. I am unsure of the technical aspects of the kill.

I espied a spin cast rod with an ultra bendy action and a 1970's retro look locally. Not sure if I should get it. For one thing there is no upset girlfriend involved to provide motivation. Same thing for the high end Zebco spin cast reels I've seen locally. . . .and spin cast is supposed to be about low end financial, 1951 aesthetics.

As a Cypriot I feel that your video is not entirely representative of our island. We have a lot more to offer than beaches and sun. And even though you seemed to be complementary about the food the restaurants you showcased appeared to be far below the average standard in my opinion. It is a shame that you did not have a local to give you a few tips and that you did not venture out of urban areas into the countryside. One of the things I always enjoy in your videos is the historical narrative - it is clear that you are a knowledgeable man and that you like your history. Given the very rich history of the island until way back in antiquity and the plethora of ancient ruins all over the island I am surprised that you did not explore some of this. We also have incredible natural beauty and some amazing hiking trails that I believe you would have enjoyed. Cypriots are also well known for 'filoxenia' (translates to friend of foreigners) or hospitality although nowadays this has been diluted by extreme immigration (highest per capita in the EU) and this includes minimum wage workers from Eastern Europe, Syria, Asia and now Africa. Also, we have people crossing the border from the occupied north on a daily basis to work. Immigrants also include well-off refugees from Ukraine, Russian oligarchs trying to keep their money out of Putin's clutches, foreign staff of dodgy foreign companies in the online gaming, gambling, forex and pornography industries that have set up shop here for tax reasons and Israelis buying up property left right and centre as a back-up if things go South quickly in the Middle East. This extreme immigration at all levels of the socioeconomic ladder has driven up real estate prices and made housing unattainable for locals. The only thing holding the country together is the very strong traditional family unit, something that you failed to mention in your video and something that the rest of Europe could learn a thing or two about from us. Yes we have problems in Cyprus and you highlighted several in your video. Yes, we have delapidated housing; a lot of this is property left behind by Turkish Cypriots who decided to move north after the Turkish invasion in 1974 and who still have title deeds to the properties in question unlike the equivalent situation in the north where Turkish Cypriots are illegally developing land belonging to Greek Cypriots and selling holiday homes to foreigners. Yes, we have littering and yes we have banged up cars but there are reasons for this. We don't have the waste management and recycling infrastructure that you have in the north. We don't have public transport. Everyone relies on their own personal vehicles for getting around. Being an island most things are imported in Cyprus and come to us with inflated prices. Cars in particular are very expensive. We cannot buy cars from the EU because we drive on rhe opposite side of the road and our cars must have right hand drive. As a result, cars in Cyprus typically have very high mileage and a longer lifetime. Combine this with the fact that we don't have the same road network and parking infrastructure as in Finland and it is natural that our vehicles are not as new or flashy as yours... Basically, what it boils down to is that in Cyprus we don't have the regional political stability and economic prosperity that you enjoy in Scandinavia. So, comparisons between Finland and Cyprus (and scores 😢) are not fair. Please remember that Cyprus was under Ottoman rule for 400 years! Because of this we completely missed out on Europe's Renaissance period. We then became a British colony for 80 years. We only gained independance and control of our own destiny in 1960! In 1974 we experienced a war and one quarter of the entire population were refugees! What was built was destroyed and we had to start from scratch. Everyone in Cyprus carries trauma from the invasion either directly or inherited. Yet we got back up again. In 2007 the Cypriot taxpayer rebuilt the main electricity powerplant on the island after being without electricity on the grid for months following an explosion of a huge cache of ammunition on its way to the Middle East that the USA instructed us to intercept and store on our soil. In 2012 we survived the banking crisis and were the first country in the world to experience a 'bail-in' (basically depositors were forced to cover the losses of the banking sector - one day you had money in the bank for your kids education and your retirement and the next you had nothing). Then covid-19 in a country whose economy is based on tourism. Another disaster! Right now we are dealing with the problems of mass immigration. The taxpayer is footing the bill for the living expenses of assylum seekers. The affluent immigrants are bringing in their money from overseas which is upsetting the market balance and driving up prices; in a country where the average monthly salary is 1,500EUR per month and the average monthly expenditure for a household of 4 people is 4,000EUR per month it is clear that house ownership is a dream for most young adults in Cyprus. Looming on the horizon is a war on our doorstep in the middle east in which we will probably be targetted because of the British military bases on the island. Yes, we have problems. We know. But I can also tell you that we have faced more challenges and more change since the inception of our young country than Finland has seen in the same time frame and we are still going strong.
