Thank you for this video! I also think the best way to prevent clutter is to not buy random, useless things in the first place, all these questions are really useful and insightful. I wrote them down to come back to before my next purchase.

❤ Thank you for your videos. I feel bad for spending and thinking of all the negatives. Ive been much better in stores, decluttered 80% of our stuff haha only allowing 2 items for baby bday soon so im not impulse getting. My main issue is eating out.. ill spend alot each month being lazy or depressed and filling my voids with foods and drinks and lack dicipline or desire to cook enough at home. We have good funds and once the food is gone i feel no guilt, yet i see my better physical purchases and feel worse smh. Idk what else to try to stay home more, we went to too many places today and so much buyers remorse even if needs

I totally sold so many of my possessions in the past and made over 1k for doing so. Otherwise, I gave a lot away or donated them. A lot of what you stated are definitely practices I have done and kept over the 18 years as a minimalist. It is cool to have these reminders so I can double check and make sure I keep the mentality I originally had. My kids have been raised as minimalists and just the other day one of my children bought two shirts and he gave me two shirts he has outgrown to donate. I love how he has thought out the one in one out mentality without me really telling him to do so (he is 15). clutter especially on countertops bothers me so much! haha. I love how clean your kitchen is. So refreshing. I donated my wedding dress about two years after I married (which was 20 years ago that I got married). I hope someone was able to buy it and use it. I used it for both my prom and my wedding. I am glad you didn't keep yours for too long too!

For children's bottles, especially once they no longer need milk and older than 2, save yourself a fortune and just get the stainless steel bottles with or without a straw because it will save you so much clutter/waste of money!

Ugh. I just got back from a trip. I had to buy ponchos for it (which were very needed) and now I am ready to donate them because I don't know if I will need them again or not. We do go on short vacation trips at least once a year so a part of me wants to, but a part of me doesn't because it means I have to store it :: groans ::. I just bought a new pair of shoes (but had one that was torn up that I was replacing). I just feel like lately I have too much stuff, even though I know I don't and I continually bring things down and down more and more over all these years of nearly a decade as a minimalist. I so agree with you about how our stuff is not happiness and that it is okay to let go of things that really don't matter in life or are not needed. I am glad you were able to share how you had to let go of something you held on to for so long. It is good to let go. I am glad that I know what I don't need and have self-control to resist things that are not necessary.

I think this totally happens as we go through seasons in our life where maybe we need to accumulate or add a few things depending on what may be going on in our life. When we are so intentional about buying things and when several new things are added, it can seem like a lot when maybe it isn't. I know what you mean. It really is such a balance! ;)

Thanks for your video again, dear Katie! Longing for going on with my decluttervibe again now. The thought about minimalism, that sometimes is confusing me, is that it seems that 'minimalists' houses always are painted white or nearly white...while my home is painted green now (nature vibe, with wooden furniture) and Im considering to paint it peachcolors..just because I feel that i changed the last years and I want some cheerful colors. My mind reminds me, most of the time, that that doesnt belong at a house with few stuff/minimalistic...I dont want to fit any label, so I dont listen to it in the end, but it seems a clear typical minimialistic thing to me. Actually weird how 'thoughts' and typical things can be created.

I totally see what you are talking about and I am sure others can relate to feeling that feeling of what a "minimalist home" should be. I feel like this can be the same with minimalist clothing and wardrobes too. I just feel like it comes back to the minimalist lifestyle vs. the minimalist aesthetic. The minimalist lifestyle to me is a very intentional life with removing the excess to create room for what matters. The minimalist aesthetic is very similar to what you are talking about with the colors and the style of furniture. If that makes sense. That is how I try to see the difference. If I want a colorful dress or a colorful rug in my home, that doesn't mean I am not minimal. Maybe it doesn't match the minimalist aesthetic, but that isn't my end goal. What matters to me is this question: does it add value to my life or is it clutter? I hope this helps. Again, I totally see what you are talking about because I have felt the same thing! ~Thank you for being here! 🤍

@@lightandmind77 I see it exactly the same way you are describing it here. To live intentional and ask myself if it add any value or not. At the end, the most important thing is to live in a house that feels most comfortable for the person who is living in it. I think the 'hype' of minimalism is talking about the aesthetic thing, thats why my mind says, it should be white and light, or you are not a minimalist. A sort of label to identify with. Well, I never liked labels, so my mind doesnt 'win'. I definitely prefer to look at it the way you describe. Follow your heart! Thanks for your reaction. Mine wasnt ment to be mean or critical, hope you didnt red it that way. It was just a thought which came up, when you talked about the typical minimalist things, like how many stuff you should be to.... Have a lovely day! Much love from Belgium 💛

Love the video! My house is like 90% decluttered, atleast for my things and toddler. Spouse holds onto somethings but we compromise. The problem still for me is keeping it clutter free and to stop stress getting food or bored getting things. I also donate alot because every time i try to sell things it stresses me out alot and want it gone or try to keep things or know i wont get enough for it. I do feel guilt sometimes but now i think harder before getting things usually or return when possible

What about decluttering when your spouse doesn’t want you to get rid of things you’ve decided to declutter? (Toys, kitchen items, etc. Not his personal belongings)
@lightandmind77
@lightandmind77 14 күн бұрын
Usually, I say to just focus on your personal stuff and the stuff in the main living spaces and leave his personal things for him to declutter. :) But, if he doesn't want you to declutter stuff in the shared living spaces, that is a tough situation. Does he use the stuff that you are trying to declutter and that is why? Has he said his reasoning?
@SarahScheenstra

@@lightandmind77 He doesn’t want to get rid of something that we may end up repurchasing later. He also doesn’t mind “just storing it in the basement.” But those are things that are just accumulating that we’re not using 🤷‍♀️
@JessicaEasterBunny
@JessicaEasterBunny 12 күн бұрын
@@SarahScheenstraI would suggest a “time will tell bin.” Put the items you want to declutter (that he isn’t ready to get rid of yet) into a bin and put the date on it and store it in the basement. And allow him a certain amount of time to go by and see if in that time if either of you missed any of those items or not. That will allow you to have the space in your home and it will give him time to realize that he doesn’t really need those items. And another tip to go by would be: if you can purchase it in less than 20 minutes for less than $20 then throw it out if you aren’t using it in this season of your life. I know, sometimes that seems like a waist of money. But if you do the time will tell bin first and you haven’t used those things in months or a year, then this rule would apply for those “what if” items.
