So are the Remington Arms M1903 lessor quality or less accurate than the other manufacturers? Are they less collectible?

Yes Sir, fantastic presentation on these great weapons of war and peace times. I own a competition match grade M1A which was used by my friends grandfather in the NRA national rifle shooting competitions from the 60s into the 70s. The gun still to this day will punch a 1" group @ 100yrds! And sits next to its predecessor the M1-Garand in the safe. There's something about shooting a 30-06 that is something you will usually never forget your first time of doing it. Thanks for putting together this presentation on something that I hold near and dear to my heart.

Excellent video- my uncle was a member of the Amer. Legion in upstate NY in the 70s and he let me bring back the parade rifles they used for cleaning and shooting if I wanted. They were all ‘03s - I recall a few very low serial numbers in the mix including one 4 digit. I was too young to really study what they had but there was S.A. and R.I.A. models . I recall the bores being horrible from constantly shooting blank cartridges andI was only able to find one that would clean up enough to shoot live ammo.... far as I know they are all still there. Most Legions seem to have traded theirs in for newer rifles but old CV still had the 03s last parade I saw .

So on this model sight there is no windage knob with serrations to move it back and forth. It looks like it simply slides left/right by pushing it, and the tight fit (friction) is enough to keep the sight in place when set, correct? I'm looking for a rear sight for my Rock Island Aresnal 1903 (year 1909) but unsure which version of these sights I need.
@WeaponsMunitions
@WeaponsMunitions 2 жыл бұрын
This was done with stop-animation. There is a serrated windage knob on the bolt-handle side of the rifle just before the upper handguard. My hand was just not in the pictures. Friction, by years of dust accumulation, does help the base to stay in place when the knob is turned. Same can be said with friction helping to hold the leaf on the latter stay in place too. Ha. Go to M1903dotcom to see the different M1905 sight assembly variants that were fitted to the Sprg, R.I., and Remington '03 rifles.

Everyone who has actually tried them thought the M1917 was more accurate than at least the early (pre 1916) M1903 Springfields. They were also less likely to explode in your face (early Springfields had lethal quality control issues the M1917 didn’t). The British taught Remington and Winchester a lot of quality control items (starting with actually measuring the heat treatment furnace temperatures).

I have my dad's 1917 eddystone 30-06. He had it sportrized. It was handed done to me in 1968. I was by a gunsmith that who ever did the sportizing did a very good job. I wanted to have new scope rings put on it. A local gunsmith said he would not retap the barrel because eddystone were known to have bad metal tempering. So it's still as my father had it. It's a great gun I will hand it down to my sons

The myth about the old Eddie Stone is a wives tale that won't go away! The only problem that there ever was with the Eddie Stone is that when they were rebarreled at the time of the arsenal rebuildl the barrels were put on so tight that many times they cracked receivers removing them and since these cracks are hard to detect, at the time so there's a possibility of the action could let go because the cracked receiver.

Enjoyed this video. I bought a sporterized Eddystone M1917, back in 1968 (with my father's help) for $40. It was manufactured in September of 1917. The ol' boy who did the sporterization on mine didn't do a very good job and as such, it did not group well for him. All my dad and I did was pour a glass bedding in the stock for a floating barrel and bam, a decent shooting rifle! Can put 3 rounds into a Skoal can lid at 100 yards with this ol' girl. Have taken many deer, pronghorn, and elk with this rifle over the past 53 years. It's 104 years old and still performing like a champ. This rifle will still be able to do its job long after I'm gone! Thanks for the video!

That means your barrel was manufactured by Remington. My Eddystone has a W for Winchester. To my understanding, the corrosive nature of cordite ammunition caused barrels to wear so when the guns were refurbished, they were mix and matched.

@@WeaponsMunitions that's pretty cool too. That particular time I was invited to a sniper match, the guys were mostly shooting 338/50bmg. I had Pa's 03, and did well. Shot a 25 lb propane tank that was mostly emptied at about 750 with a tracer round one shot and it started burning. Very surprised by that. She's been to Camp Perry, shot a bunch of vintage matches. Won medals with it. Would shoot 600 yds 4 gun matches with it and cast bullet informal match. It's a magical rifle that shoots everything to point of aim and the sights track true to range/distance. Rare in the wild. I love this rifle. Made in 1929, rebuilt in 1938 and butter smooth. Pa got it long ago thru the DCM, and we're still using it. Gently, lovingly. Along with it's stable mates the 03A3. I love the 30/06, it's my favorite caliber. I love the M1 Garand, M14 too. They have soul like a living thing almost. Finding places to shoot at distances is challenging, but worth the effort. It blows millennial minds that no scopes needed for long range shooting. Just decent eyeballs and skill, real skill. I grew up in a wilderness area, and good gun skills are respected there. Michigan's upper peninsula near Sylvania wilderness. Anyway, the 1903 is as good as it gets, and the 30/06 is a hard core combat/hunting/survival round. God bless, and keep your powder dry.

That’s a lot of inspiration for me. I have a pristine, Winchester all-around example that has unfortunately been sporterized as well. However, it’s an early, and extremely tasteful sporterization. Bunny ears shaved off, otherwise I’d consider restoring it but like I said, very nice sport job. I’m considering using it for deer season this year, but I’ve only hunted with a scope so I’m worried. And I hunt for meat that I kind of depend on each year so I don’t buy from supermarkets.
