Extinta na natureza pelo comércio ilegal, visando abastecer ricos colecionadores mundo afora. Caçadas por moradores locais que almejavam renda extra em uma região sem muitas alternativas, o que foi muito conveniente para os intermediários e compradores finais. Compradas e agregadas por um alemão fanático por papagaios, com conhecimento ímpar sobre sua biologia, e que conseguiu aquilo que muitos pesquisadores e ambientalistas brasileiros diziam ser impossível: criar uma população de ararinhas-azuis a partir de pouquíssimos exemplares, com todas as dificuldades técnicas e genéticas envolvidas. De passado obscuro e sem muitas transparência financeira, esse mesmo alemão é acusado de ligação com máfias e compradores poderosos, através da mesma instituição que alcançou o inimaginável: trazer a ararinha-azul de volta à natureza no Brasil, em sua região de ocorrência natural. Alvo de (compreensível) inveja e (talvez plausível) desconfiança por parte das autoridades e especialistas brasileiros, a parceria com o alemão foi euforicamente alardeada até o momento em que as ararinhas foram reintroduzidas na Bahia, e agora vemos toda a desconfiança enrustida aparecer: acabou o romance, a parceria foi desfeita, o Brasil não vai mais manter o vínculo com a ACTP. Usou enquanto foi vantajoso, e largou o alemão assim que conseguiu o que queria. Agora é esperar para ver: o Brasil, que se considera ser proprietário único e intransferível de todas as ararinhas-azuis no planeta, precisa provar que sabe preservá-la com todas as técnicas, controles e fiscalizações necessárias. Será que teremos a paixão, dedicação e recursos necessários para isso? O alemão que tinha tudo isso foi descartado, e contra todas as acusações feitas contra ele existe um fato incontestável: ele foi o maior responsável por trazer a ararinha-azul de volta da extinção. Não existe santo nessa longa história que ilustra ricamente a ganância humana, o desespero na pobreza, os meandros dos poderosos, a incoerência de muitos ambientalistas, a persistência e teimosia de quem ama uma espécie. Existe, isso sim, a esperança de que, no final, a ararinha-azul tenha voltado para ficar. I'm so pleased to see the Spix's macaw is now back in the wild. I've known about this parrot for many years and years ago I didn't think that this day would come but it has and that makes really happy that they're back home in the wild where they belong.

Fun Fact: Unlike the movie Rio, the spix macaw is not a bird from the Amazon rainforest, but from the Caatinga biome, which is a unique biome in northeastern region of Brazil.
