Those sick days would never be given at the back end. Once they know that they can put him to work, they’d say that he didn’t need the time off and keep him working( until the pain becomes debilitating, whereupon they’ll give him notice… for reasons…).

Yes, stop doing the heightened role, and if they want you to train them tell them that since you are not qualified to do the job then you are obviously not qualified to train them

Isn’t that illegal in Britain? Won’t they throw you in prison for talking back to your boss. Was this done on Facebook? Because I hear Facebook can get you arrested in communist England.

What is scary about this is that some companies (think one notorious for paying close to minimum wage) have a "no quit" policy: officially they will NOT let an employee quit. Not sure how this is implemented. "Joe, where are you? You were scheduled to work today." -- "I'm at my new job. I quit last week." -- "No you didn't. Company has a no quit policy, so you aren't allowed to do that. Get to work NOW." -- "Not going to happen. Now go away."

just screenshot the conversation and send a text explaining you have screenshotted everything that has been texted and that you will be giving the screenshots to their higher ups as proof of abuse of power, etc.

_"I cannot and will not do without my _*_pain medication_*_ so I might drag myself into work those two days. But first I'll need _*_IN WRITING_*_ that the company and you personally will accept 100% liability if any mishaps occur on those days. That includes, but is not limited to, accidents while driving, whatever the cause, further aggravating my injury, and disability that results, any medical expenses such as further medication, therapy, surgery, etc., increased costs of insurance, and any other unexpected costs I might incur"_ And that'd just be the starting point.

A side note to add some spiciness: The employee is a delivery driver, and he was injured in an auto accident. So, if he's on Workman's Comp from an accident on the clock, then the boss is being a Prescription Strength Douche, rather than just a garden variety Paracetamol Douche. (Of course, assuming the UK has similar worker injury laws)

That last one happened to me at my last job. Regional kanager came during the weekend so we could show him the ropes of the day to day, as they were supposedly ramping up...then we get there on Monday to uhaul trucks packing everything up, even the cubicles. Our severance was literally just getting paid for the full day. But I do thank them for one thing. If i hadn't gotten laid off from there, I wouldn't have found my current job, that I love.

Do not respond to messages like this, if you do respond cut & paste to every message sent “I am medical leave till xx and will not be responding to work related queries till then.” rinse & repeat till they get the clue. Think of it as your auto responder.

the hall pass thing reminds me that the excuse that was always given for why we had to ask permission to go to the restroom back in grade school was "to prepare us for the real world." I've never had to ask permission to answer the call of nature at work. I guess that boss must have heard that logic & decided to follow through to make it real

It's also disheartening to make 30% more money than you did 20 years ago, but still be unable to afford the things you could back then. Taxation and inflation have increased at a MUCH faster rate than average wages, and the result is the absolute quagmire of an economy we have now.

I broke my hand and wrist at work (retail) in an accident and after going to the doctor was given a list of things I couldn't do. The most obvious thing on the list was that I couldn't lift things. A few nights later at work, I was called to do a carryout for a large furniture order. I called the only other manager on duty (my boss) and asked if he could do it as I was in a cast and couldn't lift. He told me to, "just use your other hand, and try not to be injured." Those customers kindly left and came back the next day when I explained the situation. When I complained that my boss was refusing to allow me to follow the doctors advice I was told (by h.r.) that the best thing for me to do would be to ignore my doctors warnings and "in the unlikely event something should go wrong" I could sue my boss.

Anyone in a leadership position who says, "because i say so and that's final!" Has just lost the game. Long gone are the days when that's effective. You have to deal with perceptions. If your workers perceive themselves as valued people who deserve better, then that IS who you are dealing with.

The number of HR doofs I have seen who flat-out tell the employee the doctor's diagnosis was wrong ("I don't believe for a second your leg is REALLY broken... that cast must be fake") , the treatment plan is wrong ("you don't NEED those crutches, now go walk through the warehouse"), or they ignore functional limitations as written by a treating physician ("It says here you can only lift 10 lbs, but we both know that's not true") is mind blowing. I always tell folks to ask if the manager /HR has an MD. "Oh, you're not a doctor? What qualifications do you have to direct me to go against doctor's orders? I remind you googling WebMD does not make you a licensed physician".
@richb1576

You want me to work for you in pain from an accident? Ok sure. Have HR sign off on this and I’ll work for you. I will forward to them all my doctor’s orders right now. If HR approves me going against doctor’s orders I’m all in. If by some stupid decision HR approved this I would not get thru an hour of work before I ended up back in the hospital with extreme pain from aggravation of my injury due to my job ordering me back early against doctors orders. Any injury lawyer would love to take your case. A quick story. 25 years ago I got a job as a school custodian. Not 1 day off due to comp injures. Another guy started the same year I did. Over the past 25 years he’s been out on comp more times than I can count. Last year they were finally able to get him to retire. The board had to agree to a disability retirement. This means he is not old enough for full retirement but he will not get penalized for that, on top of that he gets a check every month from comp for disability. He also is getting SS disability. His yearly income is over 100k between the 3 checks. You would think he’s bedridden and cannot take care of hisself. While he’s not in top shape he is by no means a cripple. So who’s smarter? Him or me?

when COVID first hit I had to get tested back when it was taking a week for tests to come back. my twat of a boss kept texting me to see if I had results. my company wasn't one that was paying people to be out I didn't earn vacay or sick at the time so I wasn't getting paid. I kept going "don't you think I'll tell you when I get results?? you aren't paying me!" she never understood

Stamp duty should double for each property you own, that’s sort this issue especially if they backdate it for anyone who still owns the property. Give them a 12 month grace period to pay it where if they sell in that time they don’t have to pay and bring in a rule saying that the current resident must get first dibs on buying
