Slap chop is efficient and looks decent from afar, but man am I tired of seeing speed and contrast paint schemes. It’s super noticeable when they’re used to me as the blends and lighting just look off on a closer glance. Especially when applied with out an airbrush on larger models. I absolutely understand that people are taut on time to work on attention to detail, but it’s like an epidemic at my game shops. Almost every new army that someone brings in is just a rushed contrast Job that looks okay. Contrast paints are a tool, not a crutch!

Can you show how you did the Rohan units and what kind of green you used?
@Princess_QuorraАй бұрын
We had already painted Rohan before deciding to film War of the Ring Minis so no video. I used: Camo Cloak for their cloaks, shields, and base rim. Plate mail silver for the spear heads and helmets Harden leather for the straps on the weapons, belts, and reins on the horse. Dark wood for the spear shaft. Holy white for their helmet feathers. Matt white for the horse on the shield. Runic grey was used in their saddle pad and stirrups. Silver was used for the armour. Gold was used to trim the infantry shields and to rivet the cavalry shield. The hair and beards were not specific and varied to give variety. The horses used a mix of Dark wood and Hardened leather at different ratios to give a little variety in the horses as well. (recommend going very light on the dark wood to start since it is much darker than Hardened leather) Overall I used more colors on these minis than some others simply because I was having more fun painting these. You could probably get away with using fewer if you wanted. imgur.com/a/YETuZsM That is the list of colours used as well as a picture of them with the paint bottles :). i've found that for minis with a lot of skin (in natural shades of brown, at least), using a modified slapchop technique where you swap out the grey for brown/tan (still start with black and finish with white) makes the skin a bit more lifelike/healthy-looking. Something like black-> dark brown -> light tan -> white. It doesn't make as big a difference on the small minis (plus it adds an extra drybrush step), but for large ones with lots of skin you can get smoother colour transitions between the shadows and the lighter areas this way. I've used this to make some really great-looking large minis that were quicker than the traditional method, but looked smoother/more realistic than the black->grey->white slapchop method

So sorry I missed this comment. Thanks for your detailed comment. I have heard of using different undercoats for a modified slapchop but haven’t yet tried any. This sounds like one that I’d like to try out.

One thing these videos never show.... do you thin out the paint? The paint all the youtubers use seems to be waaaaaaaay thinner and runnier than the paint i have despite being the same brand/color half the time
@Princess_QuorraАй бұрын
No we do not thin out our speed paints that we use in videos. If we have used a speedpaint medium to thin out the colour we will show it in the video but this shouldn’t change the consistency of the paint. We do make sure that our bottles are well shaken before use. We don’t thin out acrylic paints either. If we do thin something out for some reason it would be stated in the video. I hope this helps for our videos at least.

Here I was trying out the slapchop technique for the 2nd time and it turned out better than my 1st one. I am happy with progress at something new. As stated rhe only thing id say is to make your grey drybrush more thorough. Basically unless its a deep recess it should get grey. Dana howl actually did a video and suggested just priming grey and doing the white drybrush. I havent tested that for myself yet
@Princess_Quorra5 ай бұрын
Thanks. This was my second attempt at it. Still figuring out how much dry brush to do. Priming grey sounds interesting with just the white dry brush. Although without the black base you would only have 2 colours under your speedpaints so you would lose some of the base,shade,highlight and maybe some of the texture and depth too that you get with the black prime and 2 dry brushes. I haven’t had a chance to watch the video as I haven’t been online the past bit but I’ll check it out when I have a chance.
@RaythMinecraft5 ай бұрын
@@Princess_Quorra if you watch the army painted videos on using speed paints they only do a white prime. The paint itself settles in the recesses and created the shading. Using grey with a white drybrush just gives a bit more highlight
@Princess_Quorra5 ай бұрын
Yes that’s true but they aren’t doing a slapchop so not quite the same. They are allowing/relying on pooling for shading but aren’t going to get the same effect as using slapchop. It could be quicker depending on how much detail you go into but I think it all depends on what look you are going for for which method is best.

Won’t doing dry brushing before painting the mini cover all those grays and whites? Serious question
@Princess_Quorra6 ай бұрын
The grey and then white dry brushing your primed mini is supposed to create natural shadows and highlights underneath the speedpaints (or contrast paints). The speedpaints allow those to show thru so you don’t have to highlight with multiple lighter colours after. I did drybrush a lighter green on top of the skin colour at the end as I wasn’t happy with the colour I chose but that was just personal choice.
@duckonquack53375 ай бұрын
@@Princess_Quorra may I ask how would one achieve this if speedpaint and contrast paint weren’t on the table and acrylic paint was. I used water to thin the paint out and it worked pretty good just wondering if there is any other tips
@Princess_Quorra5 ай бұрын
Hi. If you want to use paints you already have you could look into getting speed paint/contrast medium to mix into your acrylics. You would only need to get one new bottle rather than a new set of paints. If this isn’t an option then a traditional layering/highlighting will give a similar effect.
@duckonquack53375 ай бұрын
@@Princess_Quorra thank you so much!!!! I tried paint a mini black and dry brushing the highlights then used acrylic paint with some water to think it out. It came out better then I expected (still think your way is 100x better) but if you ever run out of speed paint try using acrylic with some water for thinning. The thin coats show the highlights well and make the shades of the black in the tuff to reach places really pop
@Princess_Quorra5 ай бұрын
You’re welcome. We do have tons of speedpaints and acrylics so we should always have something on hand. We don’t always do slapchop. Yeah but if you don't use the green "speed paint" it does not work very well, because either the green covers the shades, or it is too transparent to really paint anything. In my opinion it depends at last 50% on what paints you are using.

@@Princess_Quorra as you mentioned yourself, especially the green turned out pretty dark and didn’t let the previously prepared highlights and shadows to shine through. This is key for getting the most out of Slapchop and not needing to necessarily highlight/drybrush after
@Princess_Quorra8 ай бұрын
Yes I did mention the green was a darker green then I wanted as a colour overall. It was really not the colour green I wanted at all but neither was the other green in the original mega set. Having the selection of greens available in the 2.0 mega set leads to a lot more colour choices now then when this was done. My question is more about why Every speedpaint should be diluted with speedpaint medium when slapchopping? A lot of the lighter colours already either don’t have very good coverage in a single coat or have good coverage but still are easy to see the highlights and shadows through as is. Sometimes I find that there is too much shadow being seen when using some of the light colours that I do need a second coat to see the colour at all.

Why are you showing SpeedPaints v1.0 mixed with v2.0??? no sense...
@Princess_Quorra10 ай бұрын
Hi, Thanks for stopping by and for your question. I’m happy to answer and hopefully clarify for you. There aren’t any speedpaint 1.0 mixed in with the speedpaint 2.0. There are the 4 colours that were in the original speedpaint mega set that are also in the 2.0 mega set. (Slaughter red, magic blue, orc skin, grim black) Many of our 2.0 bottles had their first print labels (which didn’t say 2.0 or the practical naming on them) which is why they may look like the original speedpaint. There was only 1 tray that came with updated labels. We had ordered ours ahead of times so we received it when they first came out. I assure you there are no speedpaints from the originals in this video. The 4 colours that they put into 2.0 mega set actually all have the 2.0 label on them as they were in the one tray with updated labels. I did a separate video with all the speedpaints 1.0. Let me know if this clarifies it for you. If not hopefully I can clear up any further confusion.
