A Full Night at Poro-o-tarau for sound
This drawn out recording is of 9 hours at Poro-O-Tarau on 22 July 1988, right through the night and into the morning with the arrival of the dawn chorus. Even though this is shortened down to 2 hours it still obviously has lots of really quiet time in between. Sitting there that night I witnessed a massive meteor shower which carried on right through into the early hours and kept me well amused. I have never seen the like of it before or since. I guess it was bonus to rail fanning......
So set the volume level so the ambient sound which is just gentle breeze in trees and hills around me to a very low playback level
The intention of this long recording is to have it running VERY quietly in the background during the non train parts and just enjoy the time and the eventual arrival of NIMT Dx hauled freights and Intercity trains thundering by at irregular intervals. I think it was the quietest location I ever sat at for a night of recording.
This was recorded on a reasonable dedicated tape deck with a pair of cardioid dynamic microphones
In later long recordings to come I had by then developed my own homemade "low noise" preamps and better wind socks.
These of course made it possible to "hear" distant sounds MUCH smaller and distant which fill in the quiet bits with more ambient sounds but for now this is as is heard here. If you just want to hear the train bits you will have to race through and find them. There is a rough guide in the first subtitle. Enjoy Mike Edwards
