MikeRail UHD Volume 11 begins late summer 2023 with a long opening title shot of 262 and replacement Capital Connection cars B-04 at Longburn. These long clips are are becoming a theme for me now. For those who only like short train shots, fast forward. I am capturing not only trains but the world they travel in, with special effort given to the sound tracks.
After B-04 passes north the departure video of the B-05 is from a spot verboten to non KiwiRail staff at Palmerston North station. So a special thanks to LE Andrew Hamblyn for allowing the use his short video. I picked up the action again in high winds at Gillespies Line as the train left the station and curved around into sight.
Next 200 is seen just north of Milson where it was rumoured that one of the refurbished Ef class would lead 234, but that didn't happen. Then it was off to Linton to see B-04/05. Apart from getting a few runs of the CC cars testing I also spent some outings on the remaining Ef's with the occasional refurbished member out testing at various locations through autumn and into an early winter.
Another location I had not been to for years was the hill overlooking the golf course at Kakariki, I was hoping for Ef's on 391T which did not happen and also 234 was unusually short which I believe was shortage of South Island freight because of Cook Straight ferry outages.
I have driven over the NIMT in Bunnythorpe so many times over the past 20 years and often looked up and down the line. I finally I got around to making some video in the past month and it worked out quite promising.
On a clear day the trains can easily be seen appearing at Aorangi on the southern outskirts of Feilding over 6km's away. I have done several progressive cuts on this clip to hasten the 6 km's of travel ! One of the morning trains was a surprise, passing by very late 217 is usually well south of Palmerston North at this time.
Maewa for a morning and got the NB Northern Explorer and some freights. Also a work group passing north and heading for the MNPL to work.
The last quarter of this volume is at Palmerston North station. In some shots the modifications to the platform and its slow progress is obvious. Most the banging, crashing, horns and scraping sounds are from the Transfer station behind the cameras. That day I viewed B-04 arrival and the turn around with B-05 departure. Various new staff were training both onboard and the actual train make up. There were also some Train Control trainees out on a familiarisation trip that day from Wellington. Thanks for coming down the platform for a chat Dawn, it was awesome to have a catch up briefly.
There will be a second version with similar and different shots in my Cutting Room Floor camera 2 Volume 13. That coverage is much longer for those interested.
