This is becoming my favorite detecting channel. The draw to detecting to me is the historical aspect and you do excellent narration. Keep up the awesome work you do.

Todd, your filming, along with your background music has taken us back in time. Peaceful and comfortable must have been the prescription for each day that the occupants lived on these grounds. It isn't hard to see why this location was chosen.

Oh I absolutely loved getting to see inside the house. It is really a beautiful peaceful place. The music you chose was perfect. I wonder if some of the places built today will last that long and stay so beautiful.

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing this progress at Happy Retreat. I saw it in 2019 ( exterior only) when I was there for the Jefferson County tour of homes. This makes me want to go back to see it again now that so much work has been done. Thank you!

Todd and Bill, Thank you for this look into Washington family history, I can't wait to see what's next! That music reminds me of an old song book for recorder I had with songs from that era. One was" Washington crossing the Delaware" and the other was "Jefferson and Liberty", which was his campaign theme song. The song book was falling apart, but the songs were history, but it's long gone now "sigh". Todd, I hope your "teaser", lives up to expectations:) Cheers, Rik Spector

This is an awesome video. Who doesn't love exploring very old homes, much less one immersed in history such as George Washington's brother's home. When I was little, about 65 years ago, my grandmother had a similar small building on her property. She told me it was built in the 1800's when there was no electricity. She called it a dairy. I assumed it was a place cheese and maybe even milk was kept to keep cool by the breeze. It was placed in the shade of trees. My father who is almost 97 probably remembers it, so I will ask him if he remembers what exactly it was used for. Again, it looks very similar to your structure, but smaller.

All i can say Todd, is what an amazing place to be at. A place of so much history that still stands today. Can't wait to see what all you unearth on this historical property. Great video Todd. So much history to take in, in one day. I could spend an entire month there just taking it all in, an learning all about its past. Todd have an amazing weekend my friend. Loved the video. Such great history that’s pretty much unknown and you do a great job brining it out.

I live in Texas and I always dig on my great grandparents farmsite the land has been in my family since 1822 and I have found some pretty cool stuff over the years

George Washington had many siblings. A few settled in Virginia, in what is now West Virginia. The small building in the back could been used as a number of things. Sometimes it was used as a privy (outside bathroom), a school room for the children who grew up on the plantation. Or, even an office for the overseer. It all depended on what the owner of the plantation wanted it to be. I used to work at the National Archives in Washington D.C., and a docent at Mount Vernon. These vlogs are my favorite when you do them. Although, I do enjoy all of your vlogs. Thank you for the hard work you do in bringing them to us.

I grew up with the children of the owner of this home from about 1970? through the 2010?. I have many fond memories of days spent running on the property, riding bikes out front, sleepovers and playing in the octagonal house. If I recall correctly, that was referred to as the schoolhouse. Not sure how it was known or even if that is correct. ***If you can get permission, see if you can go into the basement of the main house to do some detecting. It is a dirt floor and could be something in that area!*** In the east wing, there is a beautiful curved staircase. I hope they can show bits of the upper floors in the future. The Rising Sun window above the front door was also used as a small bedroom for one of the boys when I was there!

Dependencies weren't made in a vacuum and there's likely one very similar at another estate from this time period, Mt. Vernon, Monticello, Highlands. Looks big enough to be a schoolroom to me but could have been for any number of uses.

Thoroughly enjoying this walk through history. That octagon structure resembles an outhouse I seem to recall on a video of Jefferson’s property which had several seatings side by side within it. Did you happen to take a peek inside it?
