Welcome to the best new metal band to come along in decades. In their five years of existence as a band, they set a standard that easily puts them on a par with the greatest bands of metal’s golden age. Other reviewers have described them as alien superheroes disguised as young women, angels sent to save us, princesses of metal, and angry bridesmaids. Whatever the description, I think one can say they have given metal a badly needed makeover and maybe a new lease on life. They have themselves said that part of their mission is to save heavy metal from darkness and obscurity. Some background: They were formed in 2016 from the remnants of a legendary all-girl Japanese metal band called Destrose (yes, all-girl metal has been a thing in Japan since at least 1981). Miho (bass, chief headbanger and soul of the band) had a vision of a new band in the style of the greatest European bands of the golden age of metal. She recruited her former bandmate Haruna (drums, 4'9" “pocket nuclear reactor”); they needed two world-class guitarists, and so they went and found Midori and Miyako, who were with other bands. The whole group then found Asami, the singer, who was doing soul and blues at the time (she also trained in ballet). Miyako has composed most of their music, with Miho composing a lot of their thrashier songs in collaboration with Mao, the lead composer of another band called Lightbringer. Midori has also been getting into the act, and they regularly perform a song written by Haruna as well. Asami writes most of the lyrics. They studied all the great historical metal bands going back to Purple and Sabbath, through Maiden, Priest, Metallica, Helloween, Slayer etc. They toured with Dragonforce in 2019, and word from those in attendance is that next time around, it will be the ladies headlining. They have incorporated some of the best of each of those bands into their arsenal, and have created a sound that is fresh and cutting edge while paying tribute to the old masters. This is one of their usual first songs for reactors, and rightly so--you get a good sense of the band. They do everything from soulful power ballads to heavy thrash. Almost every song includes face-melting solos by Miyako and Midori. The two guitarists are quite different in style and tone. Midori (blonde ponytail) is the extrovert and speed demon; Miyako is the introvert, with the more soulful feel (though she can also shred like a demon). Midori uses a cleaner tone, Miyako uses more distortion, pinch harmonics and pedal effects. The contrast makes their duets rich and dynamic. It doesn’t hurt that either one can smoke most of the shredders in the classic metal bands. As another reviewer said, "It seems criminal these two are allowed to be in the same band." They are one of those rare bands that sound perfect live. Lovebites are the real deal, a once in a generation band whose live perfomances are considered by many fans to be better than their studio recordings and not many bands can claim that. All members are insanely talented musicians at the top of their game, classically trained from a very early age and multi-instrumentalists. They are all around thirty years old. Miyako (black hair/Dean guitar) has studied classical piano (for twenty-eight of her thirty-one years) to concert performance standard and the piano is really her primary instrument. She taught herself to play the guitar at eighteen or nineteen and also plays bass and some drums.(BTW she was 4/5 months pregrant when this concert was recorded). Midori (blond/Esp guitar) studied piano and keyboards from the age to two until around twenty when she attended one of the premier music schools in Japan to learn guitar. Haruna (drums) also studied piano from an early age before switching to drums. Miho (bass) started out playing piano before she switched to bass. She also plays some guitar and drums, Asami the singer has had vocal coaching and her graceful stage presence is thanks to her studying classical ballet for many years.

Chopin (pronounced Show-pan) was a Polish-born Romantic-era (1800’s) classical composer and piano virtuoso who lived most of his life in France. He is considered one of the greatest classical composers of all time. Miyako, who composes a lot of Lovebites’ music, is a professional-level concert pianist, and was originally going to make classical music her career. When she was 18, she picked up a guitar, and is now one of the best metal guitarists in the world. She particularly likes the Romantic Era classical composers like Debussy, Dvořák, Chopin and Rachmaninoff. She composed “Swan Song” using elements of the New World Symphony (Dvořák) and Chopin’s Revolutionary Etude (official name Étude Opus 10, No. 12 in C minor).

That piano piece is Chopin's "Revolutionary Etude," and it's a top-tier piece in terms of difficulty...Miyako Watanabe is very much the real deal as a classical pianist. That was her musical career path from early childhood...until she picked up the guitar at 18. The thing is, every member of this band is a superb musician. Miho and Haruna are everything you want a metal rhythm section to be (and Miho, who recently left the band, will be hard to replace). Asami was formerly a soul/gospel singer before taking up metal when recruited for Lovebites. It took her a little while to find her feet in the new genre, but she's crushing it now. Midori Tatematsu is, in Miyako's own words, "faster and more technical than I am" (but that's kind of like saying a Koeniggsegg is faster and more technical than a Ferrari). Both are superb guitarists. Honestly, this is a characteristic of Japanese metal (and otherwise) bands in general: the musicianship is first-rate.

Lovebites is a one word. I think Ponyboy Curtis has already explained about the pronunciation of Chopin. The piano piece at the beginning is called Revolutionary Etude (forget about formal title It's just a set of numbers). It is a difficult piece even for real classic pianists, and piano solo at the ending is some style brought in from Chopin Piano Etude Ocean.
