Question Time Stamps for Quick Reference:
0:00 Introduction - Allow me to deflate myself.
1. 5:16 What are your thoughts about Hillsong? Are they a progressive Christian church? Is their theology sound?
2. 13:48 Is it o.k. for Christians have icons in their home?
3. 19:06 Did the apostles speak a language everyone understood in Acts 2, or did each one speak one of the foreign languages? Any thoughts? Also, why exactly did some people mock them?
4. 25:06 Can you tell me your thoughts/insights about “missionary” Spencer Smith? He’s a fundamental Southern Baptist whose ministry seems more a witch hunt than the Gospel.
5. 26:48 Can a spiritual gift be taught? I am of the mind that no spiritual gift can be taught simply because a gift is, by definition, free to the recipient. The gift costs nothing.
6. 30:47 I am struggling to find a good response to Leviticus 25: 44-46 in terms of the Bible endorsing slavery. What are your thoughts on this passage?
7. 41:37 What does it mean for believers to be "one in us" (the Father and the Son) in the same way that they are in each other? John 17: 21 has me confused.
8. 46:26 I've heard my grandma say that sometimes she doesn't pray out loud so that the devil can't hear her, because "the devil can't know our thoughts.” Is there biblical basis for this?
9. 48:32 If God is the potter and I'm the clay, am I responsible for my own life, or not? Is it up to me to make something of myself, or is it my job simply to trust and obey God (and His will for my life)?
10. 51:12 Which “form” does Jesus have in Heaven: a human one, or a shapeless one? I am having a hard time picturing Him in my prayers.
11. 53:24 How do we know that the long book of Jeremiah which we use today is the right one (instead of Jeremiah in the Septuagint which is much shorter)?
12. 55:14 Can you explain Matthew 25: 14? What are the “bags of silver”? Are they the same as in 1 Corinthians 3: 12 (gold, silver, etc.)?
13. 57:46 What’re your thoughts on Christian Rock/Metal? Is it difficult (or even impossible) to honor God and spread the Gospel using genres often expressing dangerous messages and imagery?
14. 1:00:18 How do you respond to someone who demands you give a chapter and verse from the Bible to support any claim you make regarding things that tend to be more nuanced or situation specific.
15. 1:01:36 Is it biblical to anoint your home with oil that you’ve prayed over to combat spiritual warfare?
16. 1:03:33 I was baptized as an infant in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, but got saved a little over a year ago. Should I get baptized again?
17. 1:05:06 Hosea 8:4 vs. Romans 13:1? My county hasn’t allowed more than 2 households together in months. I want to be subject, but I wouldn't consider this a "godly" law as He taught hospitality. Thoughts?
18. 1:10:13 I've heard Mormons equate Paul's conversion experience with Joseph Smith's in order to justify Mormonism. From an apologetics standpoint, why is Paul's conversion story credible?
19. 1:12:59 On the subject of divorce, can the offending spouse remarry after trying to reconcile? Or is remarriage only available for the offended? What if the offense is sexually immoral to some, but not to others?
20. 1:15:04 Is imputed righteousness biblical? I find Evangelical Christians will say “the blood covers my sins,” but the Bible says we have to turn from wickedness.
21. 1:18:01 (Bonus Q!) Can you please give your thoughts on the New Century Version, The Amplified Version, and the Contemporary English Version of the Bible? I heard your video on translations, but these were not mentioned. I use the ESV and NLT mainly, but I like to use others from time to time, too.
Here’s the video I did going through a variety of passages related to slavery • SLAVERY and the BIBLE!...

I had the precious ministry of raising four. But they are out of the house now, and when allowed, I get fulfillment from volunteering at church. (These days not so much.) All I am saying is, you will have a lot of life left to live after your child is grown, so don't assume it will just fall into place. Stay interested in life and set your son a good example of engagement with the world.

@@amybee40 I'm only 24 and single but this resonates with me so much! I really want to have kids and I hope to not revolve my whole life around my kids, as that can be shakling to them too. I hope I can "let them go" when they're adults and all the way from infancy to adulthood see my parenthood as a service to God and to my kids, and a service that adapts through time. Not as them being my kids who should love me and have the type of relationship with me _that I want_ and be crushed if they don't. I think that's a trap some parents fall into.

@@essennagerry Every loving parent falls into that trap. You can't help it. But you climb out again and grow wiser. And there are seasons of life. When you have a baby or toddler, their needs are pretty immediate, so you do prioritize them. Sounds like you will be going in with your head on straight. I wish you the opportunity, and all the joys that come with it!

Thank you for this "substantive encouragement." 😁

Mike, I could not hear you recite the words of Jesus in John 17:21-“the glory you have given me”-without a flow of my tears. Scripture does that to me, especially the words of Jesus. I was blessed to see you stifle your own tears at 42:48. After I dabbed my eyes, you dabbed yours. I have no doubt you are my true brother in Christ, as much by your tears as by your words. May God bless your ministry. Chris from San Mateo.

I think there’s grace from God if we are not physically gathering, either because of health issues or laws, BUT in that grace there may be disobedience on our part if we are not gathering in the ways we DO have as options. We shouldn’t stop gathering online for example or fellowshipping as we are able. Each person has to be faithful in obeying God given their unique circumstances and not use this pandemic or any law restrictions as an excuse to not prioritize God as we would prior to this situation. It's also important for our children to understand that although some of us might not be able to gather currently, it is something taught to us in the Bible and is a part of our Christian walk.

I'm no expert but when I hear a Christian song for the first time and like it, I then read the lyrics to see if it's theologically sound. It isn't always obvious, but that's why we got to always refresh our knowledge of scripture. And with music in general (secular music) I sort it out by _neutral_ (doesn't worship God but isn't inherently evil. Like the fuzzy love songs my parents would dance to) and _downright ungodly_ (cursing, blasphemy, promoting sinful acts etc etc)

I was very active in the church in my youth. At 13 I wanted to be Baptized. My mother thought I was too young to make that kind of decision or commitment and would not allow it. I fell away from the church after that. I came back to Jesus, and the fact that I had not been Baptized bothered me a great deal. I was lucky enough at 51 to find a church that would Baptize me. I know it wasn't required for my salvation but I felt in my soul it was necessary for me to dedicate my soul to Him in that manner. My mother apologized to me for not allowing me to dedicate myself to Him when I wished to. I feel fortunate to have been given the opportunity.

Thank you Pastor Mike for taking my question as a Bonus Question today. It was appreciated. I didn’t once know much about the different bible versions and didn’t realise there were translations (word for word or thought translations) and paraphrases. Thanks to your teaching, I now understand the difference. The Amplified seems to be a study help tool only. As for the NCV and CEV, I think they’re targeted at people with English as a 2nd language or people with only basic English language skills. God bless you and your Ministry! From Constance (‘Connie’)

I'm glad you asked that question! I personally bounced around a lot between translations and landed on the amplified bible as my primary starting point because I find myself stopping to study and end up in a worm hole that starts with "why do they say it that way?" Lol. My pastor does a fine job delivering the thought-for-thought and ideas-to-real- life-scenarios so I use my Bible time to dive deeper and like the amp version for that.

I used to be an unbeliever and listened to very hardcore music. When I became a Christian, I was still a far cry away from liking gospel music. Hardore Christian music gave me a seqway towards singing to the Lord I love. You could go astray if you aren't careful. It just depends on your heart and why you are listening to that kind of music. Although the only person I'm comfortable with my music "ripping on" is Satan.

There's a difference between Catholic images and icons, which are usually associated with Orthodox Christianity. My knowledge of icons is very limited, but my understanding is that they are usually used to portray scriptural stories for teaching, and that to study an icon, you actually "read" it. I don't think it changes your main idea, but it might be helpful to understand the distinction. Love your stuff! Thank you!

Hi Pastor Mike. I am so thankful for these sessions and I am praying for you and Mrs Winger. As a black woman, I was a little overly sensitive with slavery response. I humbly admit it could totally be me, but Sometimes it seems you deal with this issue “as-a-matter-of-fact” and I know you will not truly understand but it is truly a painful and emotional issue. Just a sister asking you maybe consider covering this with words a little more seasoned.

I will be as easy as possible. All races have been victim of slavery one time or another . Black slavery has been pronounced more in this country because this is where it happened. It is used today as a political tool . And not for the benefit of you or the country. Race does not separate people but culture and beliefs do . Read the OT GOD forbid the Hebrews from marrying outside of their own . Not race but because of beliefs. They would introduce them to other gods and they did . As GOD warned them . Even today you have Baptist marry a Catholic, trouble . I am sure Mike meant no offense.

I’m not white. Mostly Indian with Black ancestry from the Caribbean. Please be careful of allowing identity politics to be your god. You feel the way you do because you were told that’s how you should feel. Slavery is wrong but letting it define your life is worse. Has it helped the Black community? Slavery was not unique to Africans and existed in Africa. They were the sellers to the Europeans. Stop being offended and you won’t be. Bless you 🙏

I will agree with your analysis of christian heavy metal. But, I just want to suggest, to those who listen/read, that there are some incredible Christian metal bands who have done the gospel justice while still remaining attractive in terms of genre. I am mainly thinking about For Today, Wolves at the Gate, Demon Hunter, Fit for a King, and many more. I understand the sound is not everyone's cup of tea, but the lyrics from some of these songs are so encouraging for difficult situations that a Christian may come against. Personally, this music has been an avenue to express heartache and anger in a way that other music can't. When my heart ached because of the broken relationship between my father and I "Fatherless" by For Today let me know that I wasn't alone in my pain and that there was hope in God being the father I never had. When I felt lost and directionless, hearing Fit for a King sing "A Greater Sense of Self" reminded me that he has a reason for the trial I go through, and when I feel he isn't near, that's not because he has left me. "Slave to Nothing" by FFaK and "Devastator" By For Today remind me that I am not powerless against my sinful desires and that Satan will receive his just punishment in the end. So again. I agree, be careful. But God has used many people to redeem this genre by introducing heavy music with true but heavy topics.

As a very conservative Baptist I was taught icons are like the most evil thing. After I listened to conversations between Jordan Peterson and Johnathan Pageau, or Bishop Baron, I slightly changed my mind about them. ... I think most Catholics don't use them as they should and per as their doctrines. Those things should just represent beauty and some inspiration, and not used as idols as some do.

I think you could do a baptism now with whatever Christian church would do that with you, and stay in the church you currently are a part of. We're all one body of Christ after all. But look into whether or not that may automatocally expell you from your church, I believe I heard from Mike in another video that that can be the case with some churches.

1:18:01 While I applaud Pastor Mike for not commenting on the CEV and NCV because he doesn’t know about them, he should have done the same the the AMP. The Amplified Bible is a legitimate and very accurate translation because there aren’t absolute 1 for 1 equivalent English words for the Greek words. There are concepts that are connected in a single word of one language that are not there in another. Greek inflections carry meaning than cannot be fully related in a single English word. And many many other things that are a challenge for translators. In 2 Cor 13:11, the NASB95 says “be made complete”, the ESV says “aim for restoration”, the NRSV says “put things in order” and several use some form of restoration. The AMP says “Be strengthened (perfected, completed, made what you ought to be)”. I think strengthened is a better translation, but only with the modifier of perfected or completed because that is the full concept of the word in the Greek in this context. The AMP didn’t put in a bunch of possible translations like “to supply” because that is not what it means here.

On the issue if Christian rock/metal there are important issues to consider. First musical notes carry no morality. A C sharp on electric guitar is not many different morally than an acoustic guitar. A metal arrangement of a psalm would be no more or less moral than someone singing a psalm with an acoustic guitar. Lyrically and additional elements absolutely have possible problems. Lyrics have a vast possibility to be good or to be bad. Using the horns hand sign is something that would be problematic. As long as the lyrics and additional components are godly, the style of music itself doesn't matter.

Yes the apostles were filled with the new wine it was the Holy Spirit that they just received . Jhn 15:5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. I think there are some valid things that he says but he is pointing people towards the IFB which I believe to be equally dangerous as what he denounces. Check out Recovering Fundamentalist Podcast to hear more about the IFB from pastors and missionaries who parted ways with it.

Question: If God is everywhere, is he also present in hell? If so, how can a holy God reside in such a place? Also God is not necessarily everywhere. Rather he can see all things. His location is in heaven. His spirit is all searching. We would never want to go where the angels wouldn’t go. Because God’s spirit is not there. He can remove his Spirit from anyone or anywhere. Hope that helps.

Pastor Mike, I'm from Hungary and is hard for me to join you live. I have a question for you. (I'll try to ask this live someday.) In some of your videos you mention how not all Bible verses are meant to be interpreted as direct messages to us. (Like Jeremiah 29:11).I agree with you! I've been reading the Bible for decades now, and lately became unsure of how to know whether one verse is meant to be for me or not. Especially with these verses that Jesus said to the disciples. So if 'ask anything and I will give it to you' was only for the disciples, how do I know what other commands were only for them? One of my questioned verses is Luke 10:19? How do you interpret that verse? What about driving out demons? How do we know if that was only for the discpiles or for us as well? Thank you so much for your answer! Through your chanel God blesses me greatly!

Greetings from America. I hope you are well and thy walk with Christ is flourishing. The two key words that you must always remember when studying God's word are Context and Culture. That should help you with a lot of questions. Another tool is to never read just one verse but read ten verses before and ten verses afterwards. If you can, I would highly recommend purchasing a Readers Bible as it removes all chapter and verses so it reads like it was written (so the numbers wouldn't distract you as much and you can grasp the context easier as well). For Luke 10:19, read the entire chapter and you shall see that Jesus was referring to the seventy-two. Look at the full context 17 The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!” 18 And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” Jesus was specifically talking to the 72. Notice the end of verse 19, "nothing shall hurt you". Reading through Acts and the history of the church, it reveals that it was just meant for that time (as all of the twelve apostles but John were martyred). You would also read in verse 4, "Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and greet no one on the road. " This was also just for the 72. For my interpretation, it would be a show of faith that Jesus was commanding them to display as they would have to have complete faith/trust that God would provide their need at that time. However, it was meant for a time and is not a prescriptive verse declaring that all missionaries must go without provisions. May God bless you as you study His word.
