This time a review of the new 2018 Triumph Tiger 800. The latest version of Triumphs middle weight adventure motorbike. The actual model I had was the XRT but I do talk about the other versions too. It's my longest review yet as I walk through lots of the features of the bike, as well as giving my feedback impressions of it and how it rides!

First of all,a great review !! Im really looking to buy a tiger soon but not the road version!! XCA the offroad version!! Ive ridden the XCX and fell in love with it!! Please do a review on the off road version as well :)

Great review. I love doing a bit of sightseeing on the side while watching your videos. You really live in a fantastic part of the world. Maybe next time do a circuit of York, a beautiful city. Thanks.

Thanks and glad you enjoy the scenery. I do and try get out in the lovely Yorkshire countryside :) In summer we headed off on a year long round the world trip so expect lots of different scenery though as I'm trying to get bikes wherever I am! There are already a couple of videos from the Czech Republic and I'm currently in Bali where riding is a bit different to the UK!!!

I got 800 xrx 2018 model. I like how well balance is throttle and gears . Easy to flick over . Only I don't like is when move on on hills up and very sharp junction low revs is easy to stall but guess is just get used to it . Happens couple of times otherwise is brilliant bike all day around.

Great review, I just bought a 2018 Tiger 800 XRx, which is great. Mine has the lower 'crash bars' which look nice, but as has been mentioned in other reviews, are more for show than anything due to a couple of mounting points being on the engine block. My only niggle so far is the dirty air coming off the screen is always present, whether the screen is fully up or down. I'm a shad over 6' 1" tall, so average these days ;-)

Good review, I tested this back in August and found tutbulent air from the screen. And the seat does not need to be heated as there is plenty of heat that comes drom the engine in that direction. Cruise control worked easily, the bike is light and I can actually flat foot the bike, that is a first!! The seat was very comfortable! My Honda Afica twin is going back to the bank next August and I will highly consider getting the xrt version. Only other gripe is the bmw 850gs has a better display. By that I mean built in sat nav, bluetooth for phoneing. Just subbed ya Atb Colin from Ultralight nights

Thanks Charles! Like you say, I was surprised how low the bike seat was compared to other similar ones like the Vstrom and BMW GS I've recently reviewed. Ref the screen then I found the air to be fairly clean, but it could do with a bigger screen especially for touring or winter. I thought the same about the BMW 850 GS' screen too though.

I think the switches on the handlebars are back lighted so you can see them at night which is a nice plus.

Hi - great review, covered all the bases. Will be adding this bike to my shortlist of test rides. It looks like a shoot out between the Tiger 800 & BMW 850GS. Have you any plans to test the Tiger 1200?

Both the Tiger 800 and BMW 850GS are great bikes and either would be a good choice. No plans at the moment to review a 1200 but I should try and arrange to do so at some point, as well as some of the lower capacity adventure bikes like the 310 GS. Would be interesting to see the difference and if it's as big a difference day to day as people think...

Enjoyed the review but found the helmet mounted camera distracting when doing the walkabout. Like the idea of the 800 XRT (agility, decent power) but second-guess that I might like the size and power of the 1200

Thanks and yes I don't usually do any walkarounds via helmet cam but was experimenting. It's all a learning experience :) Ref power then I'm actually preferring the size and weight of middle sized bikes rather than the bigger ones. And if you look at the power to weight ratio of things like the BMW 850 GS vs the 1200 GS there's not much difference really.

Thanks. I think it would be fine with a pillion as it has a decent size (and comfy) seat and enough power (around 100bhp) for 2 as long as you're not wanting to go silly!

Hey Richard. Great review,thanks for posting. Im in the market for this type of bike. How does it compare to your VSTROM? Have you tried the new BMW 850? Im a returning biker and been away for years. Thanks

Thanks Andrew. It feels more modern (not a surprise!), smaller, more nimble, and quicker than the Vstrom. And yes I've ridden and reviewed the BMW 850 GS recently here too kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a5OJf6Zzq6-ve5c.html

Thanks. Yes Ive watched that review. Which would you choose, the BMW or Triumph. My riding would be mostly on road maybe some cinder tracks but nothing hardcore off road

That's a tricky one! I found the Triumph easier to ride and it felt less bulky but the GS felt more solid. Try them both and see what you think as they do ride quite differently which surprised me. If it were my money then I think I'd go for the cheaper GS (just!) but they're both great bikes and I'd be happy with either 👍

I like the road version but it needs the off road beak. I'd also rather see it with spoked wheels, but these will do.

Hi there. Now that's an attractive looking machine❤️❤️❤️. I like the roadie and off road variants but I feel that the roadie looks weird actually especially the front look. I think it will look better with a beak on it otherwise its a beautiful bike. Can a 5 foot 5 guy like me ride this bike? Is this bike top heavy to handle?

I had a test ride of the XCa and I thoght it was a a bit low on acceleration. Travelling at 80kmph (Australia) and gave it a kick in 5th and nothing really happened. I changed it to sports mode but it didn't seem to make too much difference. I ride a 2007 Tiger 1050 which is what I'm comparing it to. I loved how the 800 handled in the twisties but I'm concerned that when I need the kick, it's not there. Did you feel the bike had enough torque at the top end?

I found the power to be decent but I'm comparing the power of this (nearly 100bhp) to my Vstrom (at 70bhp). I'm guessing you'd have the opposite effect coming from a 1050 though.

@@RichRides I found my 2012 V Strom 650 with power commander and akropvic pipe and muffler was nearly just as quick as the 800 Triumph I tried. I found the Triumph a bit boring , I guess the 650 has to work harder and is more spirited

I just swapped my 1050 sport for a 800 totally different machine I think the 1050 had about 130bhp so you can't compare there's a big difference . Love the 800 but dare I say the 1050 sport was more comfy riding position. Both great bikes an my first triumphs 👍👍

I have a 2018 XRT, it doesn't have an "anti stall system" or low RPM assist as it is commonly known. I don't know where you got that information from.

Hmmm interesting. The bike I was on definitely upped the revs slightly as I let the clutch out from standstill hence I mentioned it in the review.

@@123limelight No, it doesn't. I can tell you categorically there is no anti stall/low rpm assist on the Tiger 800.

I've not ridden the Vstrom 1000 myself but a friend recently changed from a Tiger 800 to one and much prefers it

what about off road ?? is this model can and will handle light off road ?

I didn't get to use it myself off road but yes, light off road would be fine as I know a few people who use them like this with no issues.

Why all UK riders mount their camera s on side...why not chin mount?

The camera I use (a Drift Ghost X) is designed for the side as is the mount. ALso, my helmet has ventilation on the chin so can't be mounted there either. I have thought about trying a chest mount for a different perspective sometimes though.

The XRt is a higher spec than the XRx and as standard it also includes back lit switch gear, LED and day time running lights, five rider modes, heated grips, heated rider and pillion seat, lighter alternator, and adjustable Showa suspension

Why does everyone jerk the throttle when demonstrating the sound? Next time, please twist it slowly, and linger at the higher rev for a second or two.
