One of the best bike reviews that I have ever watched and I have watched a lot. I had an tiger 800 xc in 2011 and would say that it was one of the best bikes that I ever had and I am now thinking of another one. Thanks for honest review. It was the screen that had put me off slightly but it seems that the screen on yours is the answer.

I have a 2015 xrx that has done over 24000 miles. I love it, it’s been reliable and is reasonably well built. It’s hardly been washed over winter and been dropped 3 times and still holding up well despite not having any crash bars. I think the electronics are pretty bang on. I like the throttle map in sport mode but I switch to rain in the wet. Never had the abs or t/c kick in unless provoked. I agree that the stock Metzelers are shocking, I don’t know why triumph persist with them. Changed to Road 5s and it now handles like it should. 👍🏻

My brother has the 660 and I have the 800, so we've ridden them both back to back. The 660 is a cracking bike, but I'm not keen on the smaller screen and higher engine pitch (being picky). When my brother rode mine, he said it was REALLY comfortable compared to his 660 🙂

A very thorough review Russ, and it is a lovely bike. Funny, when I test rode an 800 Tiger, many years ago, I was really inexperienced so didn't exactly know why I loved some of it or disliked some of it. I did dislike the steering though, my X felt much nimbler, like it wanted to tip into corners but the Tiger needed "to be told". My main opinion was that it wasn't worth (to me) more than double what the CB cost. I do agree with your advice completely - without exaggerating, that particular advice that I saw and heard from you is what has saved me many times, I am certain of it. And you should keep repeating it because there are always new riders who will benefit from it . Early on I gave up on "near-miss" videos, as they were truly every ride, and just thanked my stars for the attitude you helped me to develop which kept them as being "misses" and not crashes. . As for the Arrow - wifey has one on her CB500F and I do like it more than my Staintune... I get deathly looks if I seem to be thinking about nicking it though!! ...how does she even know??? :) That camera view is a real favourite of mine - excellent to show the fun bits.

Hi Russ. Great video as ever with a honest owners review of the bike. I took out an XRT 800 for a test ride on Saturday afternoon. Awful weather conditions but she felt so stable and reliable both in town, motorway and on urban twisties. I reluctantly (after two hours) took her back to Pidcots smiling like a Cheshire cat. I am definitely getting one after I persuade the better half that it is an absolute necessity :-)

I just bought a '19 800 XRT and so far the only complaint I have is the engine heat which seems quite excessive. Just a couple days ago I removed the little windscreen winglets and have found it improves the airflow over my legs dramatically and makes the heat manageable. I plan on putting them back on on the fall/winter because the heat will be very appreciated then. Other than that I think the bike is nearly perfect. Hopefully after I hit 2k my brakes and TFT are still in working order. This might make me spring for the extended warranty though.

Very helpful video. Proper independent and honest review. I do find the gushing reviews you get from some KZfaqrs are obviously missing the cons out, when covering the bike. I’m trying to decide between 800/1200 and BMW or Triumph.
@applecorp
@applecorp 4 жыл бұрын
To be fair I think they're mostly gushing for a reason, I've had a 2018 XRT 800 for 9 months now and really the only "fault" I can find is that it's really hard to get the bike on the centre stand, it's a widely known issue for many (not all) people. Apparently remedied with the new Tiger 900.

My rental was a '16 XRX. I liked it! The bike was very good on the tight and technical roads in the Black Hills: plenty of power, steady handling, and excellent cruise control--way better than my Super Duke's cruise. And, Like you, I find the engine's flexibility was quite impressive and made riding unfamiliar roads much easier. I also did about 35 miles of gravel where the bike proved very sure footed. The one place where the bike came up short was out on the open prairie. The roads out there in the western Dakotas and eastern Montana and Wyoming are very open, fast, and lightly traveled. I found cruising much above 6k RPM (82 mph) just put fuel consumption in the toilet, and made the bike feel a little frantic. And given how far apart gas stations are out there, that's not ideal. I'd agree that in most places, the Tiger has adequate power, but someplace like that, I'd really prefer a big GS or KTM for that contemptuously easy 90-100 mph cruise. Bottom line, the Tiger 800 XRX is a really good bike..I'm just really jaded power-wise.

Good review and interesting you mention the Shiver I was thinking of that too ,I ride an XJR 1200 in the warmer months and the Tiger has a very similar if not the same power output but a good few kilo's lighter too so could be a good shot for me although I am not tall .Now subbed and will do some catching up on your channel .👍

Hi Russ, what's the problem with the Metzler tyres? I own a XRX and it is my first bike, I have been riding less than a year (I know; big bike for a newbie but it is looking after me well, and I'm loving it). I have nothing to compare the tyres with. I tend to put any nervousness or wobbles down to the eejit in the saddle rather than the tyres, but in general the whole package is really confidence inspiring. Just wondering now if it could be even better? Thanks for all videos by the way. You were on repeat play during my lessons and tests!

On the steering, would you not measure the SAG and see if your steering might improve with more/less preload on the rear, i.e. is the steering really tight or is it just the effect of a low rear end? Not enough rear preload (bike sitting low at the back) Long fast corners: Bike runs wide, bike sits up (understeered). Short slow corners: Bike falls down to the inside (oversteered).

11:08 As someone who owned a 2013 and 2015 Tiger 800 for a combined 70.000km and is now about 1,5 years and 18.000km into riding a Tiger 1200 I can't find fault with your arguments in favour of the 800. But I do feel that as an instructor who presumably spends a lot of time in the saddle you'd be able to appreciate the extra comfort the 1200 provides, not to mention the extra manoeuvrability. With more steering lock and better ground clearance for the footpegs the 1200 will turn much shorter and actually feels more nimble than an 800 in spite of weighing significantly more.

Good review. I must agree tft screens do look cool but can fail. And as mentioned will cost a lot and stop you riding legally till fixed. And you could say it isn’t the only bit of tech kit that could ruin a ride or trip that are being put on new bikes and in some cases rushed out on the market. another bit of kit that I can see issues with is keyless bikes. At the mo I am looking to change my bike witch is an bmw rt 2011, probably going with a Goldwing 2012-2017 mainly due I am doing more long tours and also two uping and I found the rt to be a good bike, But is uncomfortable for passenger on long stints, also I found rt eats oil on hot days and being bmw has a special grade that I have only found at dealerships bmw. Also having slightly more storage capacity could be handy. I enjoy you’re vids and find them helpful and helps me keep learning and improving my riding.

Nice review Russ. I rode one of these on Saturday and was very impressed. The only reason I have the 1200 is for the shaft drive (I'm lazy and dislike oiling, cleaning and keeping the back wheel clean). I wonder if anyone does a belt drive conversion? My 1200 also has a little brake oscillation when just coming to a stop. There is also a small amount when at the bite point of the clutch. The bite point being a long way out doesn't help. Like you I'm impressed with the fueling on my bike. So many modern bikes are awful unless you are 'on it'. First bike I've had with cruise control. Thought it would be a gimmick (although I use the car one a lot). I'm surprised how much I use it. Tyres! Pah, the Tourance are awful and a pair of Michelin Road Trail 5 are going on this week.
@RoadcraftNottingham

My clutch has a very slight oscillation too! Gonna wait till closer to the warranty end then may report it if annoying. I agree about the chain cleaning malarky but the extra weight of the shaft would make the 800 WAYYY too heavy and at 5 feet 8 and getting old, I'm probably gonna sell the Goldwing as it is. The cruise was a very surprising bonus, love it.

I have a 2019 Tiger 800 XRx Low and had shaft drive bikes previously as well. I added a Scottoiler eSystem with Scorpion dual oiler to my bike for reduced chain maintenance as there is no center stand available with the Low version. Just returned from a 3.5k mile trip and didn’t touch the chain once; once flow rate is dialed in properly the chain (and wheel) stayed clean and well lubed. No TFT issues yet; my only complaint is excessive vibration on the throttle side, my hand is numb within 5 minutes so I’ve used the cruise control extensively.

I can tell you. Mine 800xr 2016, with 75000 kmts Not lower version, I don't need that I am 1,7mts and my wife 1.62? I've riden this bike in all situations including offroad. The bike can go very fast, if you are experienced a 1200 won't let you back. Traveling with my wife and a lot of gears is not a problem, the bike is so capable. We've travel Spain, Morocco, Portugal, Suiss alps etc. I never felt I'd need a big engine, she is so reliable and I can do 4,6lts/100km with no problem. Having 180mm suspension travel is so convinient when traveling with weight. The bike has a decent ground clerance, it has proven useful because I tend to put myself in difficult situations from time to time. It is a pleasure to put the motorbike where you like, and climb on very narrows path, reach the top..... Etc. It is a large motorbike, with a lot of room. And it is not so heavy. All the best

Hi very good video, its funny how we perceive things differently, I have the exact same bike only a 2018 model, and my only gripe is the ride, its not wonderful in my opinion I feel all the bumps I`m afraid, the front end seems to be the problem which sadly not adjustable, I have had no problem with the TFT screen myself but as you say a costly problem should it arise, the Metzler tyres on my bike are okay, much better than my previous Tiger (2015) next year the 800 becomes the 900 look forward to seeing that, regards.

Interesting. I rode my other half’s tiger 800 low recently and was very disappointed. It found it rather resistant to turn into corners (compared to my Z1000sx) and the tyres follow imperfections in the road surface very badly. She recently replaced rear tyre (Michelin Tourance to match front) to cure this and it makes no difference. May have to try the Avon’s. It also has a very whiny engine and vibey bars at low revs.

Cost of R&D and economies of scale. The R&D cost of a cheap android phone may be higher (but may perhaps also benefit from tech developed for higher end phones), but they will also sell millions of them. Whereas these display units will maybe sell a few hundred thousand (Triumph sold 60.000 bikes in 2017, not all of which use this display). Then add the fact that it's a proprietary part that has no competition...

I was reading an article on The Verge yesterday that actually provided more insight to this. The article was about Tesla's decision to use consumer grade displays rather than automotive grade. The latter are tested against much more stringent standards in terms of resistance to heat, cold, massive temperature fluctuations, vibrations etc. This would be another factor as to why automotive grade electronics are more expensive than consumer grade.
