First ride review of the all-new 2021 Moto Guzzi V7 Stone. This retro standard motorcycle is now in its fourth generation, completely revamped for Moto Guzzi’s 100th anniversary with a new engine and new chassis. Does it balance performance and style well enough to keep up with this quickly growing genre of motorcycles?
A successful retro standard motorcycle balances nostalgia and performance, style and rideability. Now, 54 years after the first V7 and 13 years after the first modern recreation, Moto Guzzi has released the fourth generation of that modern iteration of the V7 with an all-new engine and chassis. With iconic styling and all of the quirks and character that Guzzi is known for, the nostalgia is there. But has the classic-styled bike’s performance been updated enough to stay competitive with this quickly growing genre of motorcycles?
The biggest update in this model is the new engine, designed to meet Euro 5 emissions standards and drawing on elements of Guzzi’s previous V9 and V85TT but unique to this model. Overall design of the engine is not radically different from previous versions of the bike, maintaining the two-valve-per-cylinder pushrod configuration. Thanks to the new larger displacement, we see a 25 percent increase in power over previous models, a claimed 65 hp at 6,800 rpm and 53.8 pound-feet of torque at 5,000 rpm. The crank has been re-balanced, and friction has been reduced to limit the torsional rotating effect so present when revving previous V7 models. That pull-to-the-right while revving is still there, for the nostalgic; it’s just reduced to a minor sway rather than a tug to one side.
Power output of previous V7 models was notably underwhelming, so the increase in engine performance is something that we welcome eagerly, as it makes the new bike a much more capable machine. Most of that power comes on after the 3,000 rpm mark, but the engine produces tiring vibration through the handlebars at the same point; this does not smooth out until it reaches peak torque at 5,000 rpm. The cable-driven throttle provides a direct, connected feel, but fueling is abrupt with the initial twist; it takes slow, precise throttle application to achieve smoothness. The clutch lever is springy and the feel is very vague, making it hard to detect the engagement point based on your hand alone. The combination of abrupt fueling and lack of clutch feel can lead to a bit of lurching, especially if you have the traction control switched off.
At one point in our test ride, I was carving through some mountain roads while staying in the higher revs above 6,000 rpm, near peak horsepower. I closed and reopened the throttle quickly and was greeted with a pulsing effect from the fuel injector that upsets the chassis. Thinking it may have been a fluke, I tried this on three different motorcycles and found that it was consistent and repeatable.
Guzzi has developed a new chassis to house the new powerplant, though it’s a similar tubular steel layout with similar weight distribution to previous models. The rear shocks are larger with longer travel, and the swingarm is now larger and reinforced, with a new bevel gear on the shaft drive to better handle the higher torque output.
The V7 easily drops into turns and now has the power to effortlessly pull out of them. Low-speed handling is neutral and easy. Going straight down the highway, the ride is smooth and stable. Only when pushing the bike, heavily leaning through turns at speed, did I find the shortcomings of the suspension. Both the fork and the shocks are a bit soft in both spring rate and damping, resulting in bouncing through bumpy turns and forcing me to slow down. Preload is adjustable on the rear, which did help to slow the bobbing; the front is nonadjustable.
A four-piston Brembo caliper grips a 320mm disc to stop the 18-inch front wheel, and while it takes a fair squeeze of the lever, there’s good feel for precise application. The rear two-piston caliper and 260mm disc are more than adequate as well; present, but not too grabby, with decent feel at the foot lever.

The vibrations are what give it character and make you feel connected. And they're invigorating, not tiring. In addition to a V7 850 Stone I also own a super smooth Kawasaki Concours, and find both bikes equally relaxing in their own way. Oh, and the Guzzi is still made in Italy and if its Italian style isn't enough to turn heads it also has a really loud horn!

Currently own a 1989 Moto Guzzi Mille GT 1000 cc that I have had for 20 years. Once took me 120 miles on one cylinder at highway speed when one spark plug wire crapped out on a Sunday morning with no shops open. At almost 70 years old it has gotten too heavy to maneuver in and out of situations. Purchased a 2013 Moto Guzzi V7 Stone at more than 100 pounds less wet weight. Absolutely love it. Will stay with Moto Guzzi for the rest of my riding life. I have owned BMW, Laverda, Ducati, Moto Morini, Triumph, BSA, Zundapp, Indian, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Cagiva and loved them all for different reasons, but the fact that I can physically handle the weight of a bike that will cruise (illegally) at 85-90 mph for as long as I need, looks good, is reliable and affordable and unique, why shop anywhere else? I had to chuckle with the comment on "vibration" and torque pull to the right at rest due to the crankshaft. I grew up on British twins and singles. That was vibration! What I feel on the Guzzis is merely machine communicating with rider in an old school manner. Nothing-burger. - -Mike Battle

It’s not a horizontally opposed V twin. It’s a longitudinally mounted V twin. If it was horizontally opposed it would be a flat twin. The torque twisting effect is a result of the longitudinal mounting of the spinning crankshaft. Sorry for being pedantic.

It feels special and I’m enjoying looking at it almost as much as riding it ☺️

I don't know why no one else has bothered to tell you this but your video is very confusing. You stand behind a 750 V7 Stone and almost immediately slide into a description of the 850 Special with no mention of that change of subject. You spent most of your time riding the V7 Stone (you said) but spent most of your time describing the 850 Special. Except where you talked about a horizontally opposed motor which none of the Guzzis has. And the video doesn't help since it is jumping back and forth with no relation to what you are describing. Which one did you really ride the most? The one with twin dials or one of the ones with the single offset dial? If it had two dials it was the 850. The other two have the original 750 motor.

I don’t see how it is possible to reduce the torsional pull... it’s a ( side) natural effect of the acceleration or deceleration of the masses rotating along the motorbike axis. You don’t fell it at all while riding the bike, just when you stand still.... like an old muscle car... just cool.

Tiring below 5,000? Well I'm 67 and I've ridden 850 miles on my V11 Lemans Rosso Corsa and never noticed the vibration to be tiring. The only problem is I do want to stay around 5,000 but that's a ticket speed in California / Nevada. Now if / when Miguil Galluzzi designs a V7-85 Racer / Lemans I might have to give up my Lemans for a lighter bike. (or just buy one and keep both)

FINALLY! Moto Guzzi puts a decent motor behind the V7 III, even though it's a neutered version of the v85TT motor, I'll still take it. I'll be waiting a year or so until these are old news to pick one up, when the dealers are cutting $2k off msrp models to get them off the lot. Would've liked the V85's 80hp version of this motor, but I'll pop the heads off and skim them down .030" to get the compression up and open up the exhaust and intake to get darn close to 80 crank. Who knows, maybe I'll get in touch with megacycle and see what they cam do as far as camshaft options. .030" more lift and 10 degrees more duration would spice her up a bit.

I keep watching V7 reviews in the hope that someone will do a comparison with the outgoing model .Which I have. So I would like to know how big/small an improvement the extra power and displacement are . Should I buy one. All I have seen so far is endless short reports that say the same thing. It`s been around 50 years. It`s a retro kind of bike with loads of character and styling to suit. Some vibration . ( I never noticed it which means the V7III is smoother or I have little experience of "smooth" multi cylinder bikes .. I do not and have no wish to become pampered to the point of thinking a V7 shakes. A BSA A65 .. that fucking buzzes .) Maybe this is because most of these bikes are bought by hipster types who have no long term experience of Guzzi`s and pose more than ride. Anyone who has ridden both , I would love to hear their opinion. Anyone who wraps exhaust bandage around his straight through pipes and fits stupidly low clip on bars ... don`t bother.

Are you near any Guzzi dealers? I'd say the best bet will be to go for test rides yourself to get a feel. I currently have the 2019 Night Pack version in blue. It's my first bike ever. I love it! I don't have much experience on many other bikes aside from maybe a quick drive down up and down the road but not enough to give any real informative comparisons. I was honestly surprised with how smooth my V7 rides on highway speeds up to 80-85 MPH. So I'm also curious about the vibration he experienced on the new 2021. Once my Guzzi dealer gets a new 2021 for demoing, I'm heading over to test it out. Im curious if the power difference is significant enough to upgrade. Either way I'm excited to see one in person once available.

@@GerardoLopez-ki4cu Interesting about the vibration thing. Like you I have not been aware of it ,so unless the bigger engine shakes a lot more or the tester is vey sensitive it seems odd. As you say a test ride is the answer. I am near a Guzzi dealer ,but they have been closed due to COVID . Opening soon however. I have enjoyed my V7 III Stone so much ,I feel bad about getting rid of her. Never have I enjoyed a motorcycle so much. So the new one will have to be very good

I will never buy another new Piagio Guzzi since I was shafted with the Stelvio Cam Issue. Twice, before 12000 miles, the cams went. Guzzi took 6 months each time to send the Cams, charged me for the fitting and oil change on both occasions. I Still have the bike that cost me over £8,000, the cams went again for a third time, it’s sitting with only 12000 on the clock, f@cked cams and rusting away to always remind me: “ Never buy a New Guzzi “. Some Guzzi owners took them to court, but they got around it, because of the way Moto Guzzi export their goods! Cunning, very cunning!

Best review yet on the V7! As for the bike it would be better if it had the V85TT engine spec to make it that more appealing. It’s a beautiful looking bike but I think it lacks the substance to go with the style and price. The huge fuel tank is a plus to go long distance. For the money there’s plenty of options so best to try them all and pick what suits best.

You're 6"4 & 200 lbs or so right? The rear spring was set at the halfway point. Dial it up a notch. Also, the 36 psig ft & rr spec isn't a hard & fast rule, many T100 owners run 39 psig for the rr using the same tire size.

You do like all the other reviewers & fail to pick up on some fundamentals major advantages of these bikes & indeed it's something that should be mentioned during review time as it is a critical factor-how easy is it to carry out basic servicing on these bikes or any bike you review. If it's difficult then that's time & possibly money you will need to spend & lot's of it if you're going to pay for someone else to do the servicing. If it's easy then perhaps if you have some basic mechanical knowledge & an aptitude for mechanicals as well as some tools then perhaps it's something you could do yourself. Fundamentally the MotoGuzzi is the easiest motorcycle to service due to not only it's configuration but also the mechanical design which is very traditional but supremely efficient-reliable & above all easy to work on with the most basic of tools.

Oh, that's right: I now remember how the OEM exhausts sound. Please note this: cars won't hear the sewing machine sound this bike produces. Loud pipes save lives: I strongly suggest no dB killers from good Agostini slip-ons. They sound glorious and you'll be heard. Sure, some stuck-up folks will roll their eyes looking at you. But they'll hear you. I also strongly suggest a flyscreen to cover the off-centered clauster, which creates an unequal whirlwind that'll make you angry after a 300km ride. The difference on riding comfort is simply night and day. The Dart Flyscreen I got was very easy to set and install. Mark my words, you want it. Finally, get rid of these OEM mirrors. They're simply not good. I had to stop every 500km to screw them back. The OEM bar-end mirrors you'll find on the Special Edition are much better and fit any V7. Get some, they are so worth it. These three mods are must have. Then you can add a remaping if you feel the need to do so. Strap your favourite tail bag on this bad girl and this bike will never, ever, ever disappoint you. I have a W800 and an Himalayan in the garage as well. This V7 is now my go-to bike, without hesitation. Don't pick the easy Triumph choice: Moto Guzzi will give you as much bike for 2000 $ less, which is about 500 $ less mods included. AND...you'll have a driveshaft. Never will you be bothered by a chain anymore. If you like character in an engine, a transmission that'll tell you with a charming CLUNK it's now clutched and a plush seat you can ride for hundreds of kilometers without any trouble, there's your pick.

Beautiful designed Bike, but really not worth owning per your evaluation. Viby below 5K!!! Bike is more a Urban commuter then open HWY.

Looks good, BUT, typical of most Italian bikes - vibration issues, crappy fueling tuning, and just like my Monster, poor clutch feel - I had a Guzzi 850 LeMans Mk II, back when they were new, and loved it, but when I replaced it with a Suzuki GS1000, I realized how many compromises you have to make to ride it. Only kept it 3 months...I'm looking at the MT-09 at similar money...

After viewing a couple videos, this is a so-so motorbike imo. Generic styling, fueling issues and barely adequate suspension. meh. An upside is the price, so everything but the fueling could addressed I suppose.

1:30 so they killed all the character... and made it sized for midgets. They have moved so far away from my old LM3 that its not my brand anymore 😥

Can you expand on that? There seems to be very little on negative info out there in guzzi's outside of parts are hard to find. Just curious as I am thinking about getting one.

@@rabbidbabies4094 build quality control mainly. Also probs around a leaking tail shaft. Basically you had to be handy with a spanner to own one.

I know it's an American thing but it pains me to hear you guys pronounce Guzzi. It's kinda pronounced Güt-zee not Goot-zee
