I worked at Pearl Harbor as a machinist for a time before moving to another government agency. One of the "rule of thumbs" at Pearl was not to use aluminum too often as chuck jaw protector shims because aluminum collapses and permanently deforms unlike copper which holds it's shape better after it being work hardened under jaw pressure. Simply put, it won't run away as fast as aluminum does thus may prevent workpieces from coming lose. Little side story, I once wanted to support a large job on the floor of the boring mill section so the rigger could turn it over before placing it on the boring mill. So the rigger asks me, what am I going to put the job on so he could flip it? I replied those pieces of wood. He looked at me very seriously and in a scolding voice told me, "Wood?!? Wood?!? Wood is good but steel is for REAL!" Only then did he laugh and started to lift the job while I procured some steel plates to put the workpiece on so it wouldn't collapse like the wood possibly could have. We had end grain wood block/paved floors in some areas of the shop, but they were so riddled with metal chips of variously types and varying hardness, that no one dared putting any work on it.

Gavin, get some .02- .03thick aluminum sheets. Make them the same width as the total depth of your chuck jaws. Make a "tube" by bending over the edge of a table or bench. Wrap around barrel shank. This yields more surface area to grip and less chance of knocking out of alignment. Those tiny shims you have will act like teeter totter fulcrums when force is applied even with the outboard end supported.

Xringhammer 1871 Actually- that’s what I want here- a fulcrum- if you have too much contact pouch you won’t be able to dial in the barrel angularly by moving outward spiders screws. There’s actually plenty of contact patch and plenty of grip- aluminum is good in this way because of its lack of lubricity.

Your suggestion would be good with a setup like the Tru-Bore alignment system where you the entire chuck rotates and has axial movement to align the bore- a six-jaw chuck clamps the barrel securely along a long distance (no fulcrum action needed between barrel and chuck jaws)

whats the chance of getting you to do a barrel for a 700 for me if i send you the exact blank? Im really impressed with your barrel. Lol i want one of my own. I wouldnt ask but man i really like the accuracy your getting and how it looks.

my question is based on reloading.. in the video you said you cut it to 24" of barrel length, but when we reload it is to rifle length ( how long the rifled part of the barrel is) . What made you decide to go w/ OAL and not how much rifling you had?
@sangramkesariray

gavin, why is it that the barrel is thinner at muzzle end and thicker at rear end, is there a process which turns the steel rod into this drilled non-uniform thickness from the outside, i've seen barrels with uniform thickness, like the ar-15 ones,
@sangramkesariray
@sangramkesariray Жыл бұрын
found it, for someone having similar question. that process is called "tapering", it can be done on a lathe

How come you didn't go with 1:8 or 1:9 twist rate?

Why would you cut an inch off the side you are chambering? Doesn’t the reamer take care of this?
@Ultimatereloader
@Ultimatereloader 4 жыл бұрын
It's recommended- like cutting the ends off carrots before you cook/eat them :) Seriously, there can be different stresses/dimensions right at the end of the barrel blank...

gavintoobe I’m curious because I was told the same when learning to chamber. That the tooling typically caused small imperfections at both ends of the barrel. I just never understood the point when the chamber reamer typically takes off over an inch of the bore. The muzzle end I understand and have always taken an inch off.
