I need to replace just the Lower ball joint in my tacoma, would I be able to remove the two lbj bolts, nut, and shock bolt and push it off the spindle just enough to get a ball joint press in there? Without loosening the cam tab bolts.
@SprocketHead
@SprocketHead 4 жыл бұрын
If you had a strong enough press, I don't see why not. But I'd be worried about it not fitting or being strong enough. Hydraulic press is what I used, so I wasn't able to really gauge how much juice it took.
@raegenjay8689

You can rent a ball joint press from most auto part stores. It fits on the control and with it installed on the truck.

Does the whiteline kit (W53312) have all of the bushings required for both sides? Or do you need to buy a kit per side?

Im a little confused about the exact bushings you used. The whitline bushing kit already comes with poly bushings installed in the sleeves right? Did you use the moog bushings or?
@SprocketHead
@SprocketHead 6 жыл бұрын
Whiteline kit has the bushings and sleeves already installed. They are a plug and play thing. The moog part I used is just the lower ball joint. I mis-spoke that it was the bushing. My bad.

I'm not sure about the Total Chaos one, but I doubt it would fit. I used the MOOG one which is technically aftermarket.

@SprocketHead

It was plenty strong enough, there just wasn't enough room for me to maneuver the control arm to the position I needed it to be in, in order to press the new bushings in. The big arbor press had enough room.

Also, more heat was applied than needed. Soften the rubber, no needed to set it on fire and have us all breathing that across the planet! Thank you :) :) :)
@SprocketHead

Had to add that much heat on that particular arm. The other side wasn't so bad, but didn't want to bend the control arm. Beer and fire always makes a good time anyways!

Can you do this without taking the control arm out? I just need to get the lower out to pass an inspection.
@SprocketHead
@SprocketHead 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I know what you are asking. The upper control arm is not necessary to remove if you are rebuilding the lower control arm. The lower control arm has to be removed to rebuild it.
@OhmME1984
@OhmME1984 5 жыл бұрын
@@SprocketHead I just have a failed lower ball joint. I see youve disconnected the shock. Then removed the nut on the lower ball joint. Then popped it off. Im wondering if i can bend that arm down enough to put a hand held press to just get the lower ball joint out. Would the bolts on a seized setup move that much you think? I am not looking to get crazy with the bolts.
@SprocketHead
@SprocketHead 5 жыл бұрын
@@OhmME1984 I believe, with how much pressure it took us to get mine out, that you probably would not be able to get it out without a real hydraulic press. If I remember correctly, it took my press up to 15T to get it to move. The bolts might not actually be as bad as you think, but if you do mess with them, you will have to align the truck again.
@OhmME1984
@OhmME1984 5 жыл бұрын
@@SprocketHead Just tried to attempt the ball joint. Couldnt get the arm to articulate down past the bottom of the shock as the bolts are frozen. Which means cutting. I think ill just replace the control arm.

It can do depending on control arm strengtn and how stuck bushes are. Clamping other end in a vice level with top of jaws may spread the load. However I would personally avoid this method if possible.

If you don't have the press i think is cheaper to buy the whole lower control arm both
@SprocketHead
@SprocketHead 6 жыл бұрын
Possibly, but with a lift, the stock bushings will continually go bad due to the bad angles and rubber bushings, and most aftermarket lowers that have Poly bushings are upwards of $1k. It's just a cheaper alternative if you don't want to go aftermarket.
@mattb9664
@mattb9664 6 жыл бұрын
I’m going to be doing this soon - Tacoma’s only really have Total Chaos LCA as an aftermarket option at about $2000 for a pair. OEM LCAs with rubber bushings are $600 to $700 for a pair. Moog and Menvotech LCAs are kinda garbage if you are actually wanting to upgrade, so Whiteline and Energy Bushing upgrades to the OEM LCAs we already own is the best and cheapest alternative.
