3 Clues an INFP-T is also a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) // A Highly Sensitive Person, or HSP is a term coined by psychologist Elaine Aron. According to Aron’s theory, HSPs comprise about 15% - 20% of the population. A Highly Sensitive Person is a personality trait known as sensory-processing sensitivity or SPS. Those with high levels of SPS display increased emotional sensitivity, stronger reactivity to external and internal stimuli-pain, hunger, light, and noise-and complex inner life.
Most INFPs and INFJs are said to be Highly Sensitive People. So how do you know, as an INFP-T, whether you are also a Highly Sensitive Person HSP?
In this video, I walk you through 3 tell-tale signs that an INFP-T might also be a Highly Sensitive Person. Being an INFP and HSP can have seemingly contradictory traits that can make a person feel misaligned in either disposition.
Are You a Highly Sensitive Person?
Take this test by Dr. Elaine Aron to find out hsperson.com/test/
To your success,
Doreca Delbridge [Ms. Dory Linda]

You pointed out the distraction of visual clutter, whereas with me, it is audible clutter (such as machine or motorway noise) that agitates. There are many restaurants I don’t go to due to the acoustics of the place, even if the food is great.

Likewise! For me, it feels like being unable to turn off my "active listening"; so when it's quiet and all I can hear is the ceiling fan rotating or the air-con buzzing away, or when I'm trying to concentrate on something but a new song starts and it drags my attention completely away. I sometimes find myself wearing noise-cancelling headphones without listening to anything just to fabricate that sense of isolation. The problem comes when taking them off and having to re-adjust to the ambient noise. Interestingly, for me, "visual cluttering" is there but definitely less. It manifests as picking up on lots of small details. It's more useful in that sense as it's not as distracting, but it can kick in to overdrive when it comes to interacting with other people, as it's a big part of processing another person's current emotional state.

Audible clutter is what gets me the most. My poor husband that just wants to watch a hockey game after a long day or work. I cannot stand the sounds of stadium games with announcers!!!!!!! And fun fact...during covid there aren’t huge audiences so they’re piping in FAKE audience noise. Thankfully my husband bought me some noise cancelling headphones for my birthday. Best gift ever.

I just took the test and it says I'm highly sensitive. I told my sister years ago that if there is a sudden change of plans that she makes, she needs to give me time to adjust. I tend to pre-think what our day might be like if we have plans and I sort of know what to expect. When the plans change and it isn't me doing the change, I become overwhelmed and tend to have a small melt down. I feel confused lost and disoriented. I'm better now at controlling my reaction but the feelings are still there. I don't like line of sight clutter and deal with it for a short while but eventually I need to straiten it all out. At times I can be very detail oriented and this always confused me because I am most definitely INFP-T and I never could understand this aspect of my personality. Great video thanks so much and I look forward to your next one.

I had never heard of HSP before finding your channel. According to the test I'm highly sensitive. This explain a lot, such as being unable to watch any movie where people scream, feel pain, any kind of violence... And I also cry when I see people crying even though I have no idea why they're crying. 😂 And yes, I'm INFP-T.

Absolutely uncomfortable with rapid change in nearly every case, despite that change is something that I also thrive on. But I like knowing ahead of time, or having input on that change. Visual and auditory clutter and overload have always been a problem. Both are considered to be learning curve issues. Subtle details, I can pick up while I sometimes miss bigger details. Yet, I'm definitely a big picture thinker. I've tested as highly sensitive spiritually, emotionally, physically, mentally, and to the environment itself. That's both a blessing and a hardship, depending on the outlook and situation.

I actually scored around 75% on the HSP test! And, yes, I am an INFP. I am a CNA who works for older people in their homes. Recently, during an in-service, when we introduced ourselves, they asked us to say what we like the most about our job. I said that I like how my job changes for each person I work for. And, it can change from day to day working for the same person. I love acquiring new information! That would be how the P aspect in INFP comes out in my personality. How the HSP in me comes out would be the third thing that you mentioned in this video. I can immediately tell by feeling the vibrations that the person is giving off, combined with seeing their body language, where the person is currently at emotionally, what kind of day they have had, etc., before they have said a word! It just is something that IS. I would also add that I think I am an introvert (I) BECAUSE I am an empath. You NEED to have some down time, because you have been a sponge all day long, especially when you have come across negative energy! Negative energy can potentially overwhelm me. There isn't a thing in the world that I could do to change this about myself! But, that is okay! I am one of the fortunate few who loves their job! This feeling that I am doing my part to make the world a better place brings me happiness! And, the bonds that I have with my loved ones gives me my strength. Life IS what you make of it! Thanks for making this video! Take care. Susan

Absolutely rings true. I am an INFP-T and HSP. Clutter, noise, smells and temperature all affect me greatly. This video makes me feel better because I've often thought that I'm just more of a complainer when it comes to those things. I don't mean to be a negative or critical person, but in a group I'm often the only one pointing out poor lighting, uncomfortable temps, strong smells, too much noice or an annoying sound, etc.! It all makes sense now! I also need to have the perfect "set-up" if I'm going to get any real work done. For example, I need a comforatble chair, comfortable clothing, good temp, good lighting, no clutter, etc. in my desk / work area before I can focus. It sometimes takes me forever to get started on work, because of this tendency. So interesting, thanks for your insights and videos!

I'm INFP-T and also definitely highly sensitive. I can't deal with visual clutter at all, it's like the state of my outer environment is going to also be the state of my inner environment. I won't be able to focus. It calms me to organize things. My husband has zero problem with visual chaos, so it's a challenge for us sometimes. I have a hard time with audio chaos also, and just overstimulation in general such as being in crowds, shopping, etc. I don't know if this is common for HSPs, but I even have overstimulation with different textures on my skin. I cannot wear clothing with mixed fabric textures (such as cotton + lace, knit + uncovered elastic), clothing with tags or anything remotely rough, it can make me panic! I did not know this stuff was a whole personality trait. I thought I was just weird. :)

What a confusing time when we don’t realise that people don’t feel/see things the same way we do. I’m wondering if anyone has the same problem as me which is working a full time job and having all these ideas to make their own business but doesn’t have enough energy to go home and work on these side hustles? I always just thought I was lazy but maybe I’m looking at it wrong. Contemplating if I should quit my job to focus on this for a while? 😂

I think I can relate to the visual clutter if only it relates to the things I'm working on. And I'm not a organize person. For example, building legos. I have this tendency to sort the blocks according to shape and color, before stacking them up. Also whenever I am working with massive data, i will have trouble if the data is not sorted out or arranged in certain manner. I kinda feel overwhelmed if jumbled up data or blocks. 😅

yup i'm both. Idk if it's good or bad. but there is a lack of understanding for both INFPs (in general) and HSPs. people never understand why i hate loud music, why i hate meaniness, fighting, conflict (also survivor of abuse). I can 'go with the flow' but change is very hard depending what it is. Liek if it's just adventuring and something doesn't happen perfectly that's fine i'm happy just to see nature, and be able to enjoy it. but other changes yeah it can be overloaded. the visual one yeah i'd say that's true for me as well. I also do programming (and graphic design) to much information i can't process. However at the same time i'm very very disorganized. I think it depends on the healtiness of the mind. For me cleaning takes a lot of mental energy the 3rd one yeah to but it depends on the task.

26/27 @ HSP test, as I expected haha :)) It's very hard for me to adapt to sudden changes(especially when the change is completely different from what was expected before)... it's like my brain is driving with 100 km/h in one direction and can't switch that fast to another one. Firstly it needs to push the break pedal... to stop... relax for a bit... and just then to drive in another direction. And when you add an urgent task needed to be done once with this, I usually feel some kind of adrenaline rush in my brain. Regarding the visual clutter, shortly: I really hate it! But when visual clutter meets procrastination, the second one win :)) But not entirely!! At my desk or in my room if there are a lot of things or clothes, they can stay there an entire week or even more but if I see one garbage(details...) like a useless sheet of paper or some tissues, I can't go outside and leave them there. And about details... it's interesting... it depends on the kind of details, if there are details of a big picture that doesn't have a strong meaning or interest for me, I can be blind at something that is in the front of my eyes; but for something that I care... a different story...

I don’t know if I’m a HSP but I am definitely sensitive. The first two apply to me surprisingly well. With the second one I can have a messy room/desk but it has to be an organised mess. So a pile of random papers on the side or pile of clothes in one place than everywhere. When anything becomes an unorganised mess even if there nothing more added just that it’s no longer piled together etc then I hate it and I can’t think clearly. If I'm going through a good patch in my mental health then I'm less likely to be triggered by those things. Also being shy and sensitive as a child which was partly due to crippling social anxiety. I suppose I'm unsure whether it's anxiety which causes the overwhelm, or being an HSP which causes anxiety...

Also I'm new here and just wanted to say how lovely it has been to find this channel and community and realise I'm not alone in the way I experience the world! I don't know any INFPs in my day to day life!

@Elizabeth you're so welcome. I'm glad you're here. Have you read Elaine Aron book yet? hsperson.com/books/the-highly-sensitive-person/ Getting familiar with the personality might be so helpful since so many people tend to be misdiagnosed. So I'd try to find a psychiatrist/psychotherapist who specializes in HSPs.

Hello! I am an INFP-T but I'm not a HSP😊. In fact I actually really do focus on the big picture. My mother gets really mad at me for not finding things that are right in front of me😅😅 But I actually wanted to ask about something else. So I've watched all or most of your videos, and they're all incredibly helpful, and you ALWAYS make me feel understood. It's actually scary sometimes how accurate some of the things you say are. But um... could I ask for help finding a job that suits me? The thing is I get SUPER obsessed with sonething and then get bored with it. And I would actually see this as a positive quality if it wasn't foe societal expectations and the fact that I can't get anything done😅. Getting away from the point. Um so I can't decide what job or even career path I wanna do!! I am 15. And I'm supposed to apply to sixth form colleges very soon. For GCSE I took -Drama -Italian (but I don't think I'll do an exam on that due to covid) -Triple science (I CHOSE THIS INSTEAD OF ART. What is wrong with me!!) As well as the core subjects like English, Maths, RS etc. And um. Well I was thinking maybe I could go into like idk theatre, art or english and if it doesn't work out I could teach the subject instead. But I still don't know what to do😂😂 like, which one I want to choose...and I don't know what to do and I'm stressing because all my friends know what they want to be when they're older. I swear if societal pressure didn't exist life would be so much easier. I would become an eco-minimalist, do whatever part time job I want, and volunteer most of the time so I don't get bored, but I still do something good. But that's not possible. I am actually very worried because my cousin failed to graduate on time (he did graduate recently though) and everyone is judging him because he chose to do something different from what he said he would do (he didn't like law school and wants to join the military). And idk it's just all very stressful. Because I STILL DON'T KNOW what I wanna do with my life!! Ugh sorry😅 this comment is so longgg🥴😣

I'm so glad you're finding value in the videos. From what I'm hearing you say, it's coming across as though the issue isn't a struggle with not knowing what to do in terms of your passion but more to do with following a path that can be accepted by the society standards. That's a much deeper exploration, I couldn't possibly mentor you through this comment thread. Having cycles with interests seems to be a shared experience amongst us intuitives, it's just a matter of learning how long your particular ones last so you can enter and exit situations more fluidly. So I don't foresee that as being the most challenging aspect for you. The hardest part, I think, is a personal journey to come to a place where you might have to ask yourself what path can't see yourself live outside of? Are you prepared to face whatever comes with that? I know it isn't an easy decision. I have been there. So I would encourage you to examine what does success, joy, fulfilment look like to you? Perhaps start there?

I hope you get some clarity 🙂 That's so kind of you to say and I appreciate the support. Comments were a lot easier when the community was smaller, as we grow I might have to limit to a certain time frame.

INFP and HSP are almost synonyms. I don't think it needed any explanation.

They definitely have similar characteristics but they're not the same thing. It's helpful for those developing their self awareness to know there're distinctions.
