If Joaquin Phoenix disturbed you as Commodus in this one, I would recommend Joker (2019) to you. He really hits it out the park.

when Commodus stabbed Maximus, it wasn't in his arm, he stabbed him in the back, puncturing his lung. making it even worse. that's what Maximus died from

13:12 - that's incorrect. People weren't stupid back then. A gladiator was a valuable person with skill and training that cost a lot of money. Gladiator fatalities and fights to the deaths were very rare and costly. Gladiator games were more like MMM today, fighting for amusement of the crowd, winning money, but not sacrificing their lives. And it wasn't just slaves that fought; free men joined gladiators to become rich.

With Commodus dead, the little boy Lucius would be next in line. If Commodus was alive when he approached his teens, Lucius would certainly meet with an arranged 'accident'

Shout out to Connie Nielsen that played the sister, though she was very good and had good chemistry with others, as well as Dumbledore/Richard Harris/emperor, the actor that played Proximo actually died during the filming and the scene that he dies in the movie is actually CGI, crazy part is the movie script wasn’t actually written but outlined in bullet points what they wanted to happen and writers on the set, USA via fax, actors, directors would write the lines the night before, there were couple days where shooting was canceled because they couldn’t come up with the lines, it was possible because movie was shot in linear fashion same as the movie you watch instead of multiple crews and sets shooting bit parts.

the little boy didn't knew of the plans, he just coughed up his mommy was planning something, hence commodus threatening her to hard the boy if she doesnt speak about the plotting, the boy obviously didn't knew any of that

You should definitely check out "Joker" starring Joaquin Phoenix. You might actually feel bad for arguably the most psychotic villain in all of pop culture. Phoenix is a phenomenal actor. I agree that some of these actors are almost too good at playing crazy people. It makes you wonder...

Joaquin Phoenix was brilliant as Commodus. Jack Gleeson (Joffrey in Game of Thrones), said that he inspired with Phoenix´s performance in this movie, for his role in the series.

How nobody recognised "the Spaniard" as Maximus is unbelievable.He was a roman general who commanded an army.

they did? a few gladiators said they fought with him. how would someone who hadn’t met him (which is most people) know it was him?

Its not like today where if you're famous everyone knows how you look. People likely knew who Maximus was by name but majority of people didn't know how he looked besides his own army. The soldiers dressed in dark colours aren't part of Maximus' army they are Praetorian Guards that are essentially bodyguard army who specifically only obey the emperor and not the senate. Maximus' army was stationed in another country in Germania so they didn't see him fight in Rome to notice he was still alive. Also Maximus had never set foot in Rome so no one knew him there besides the Emperor, his sister and Quintus. Higher up people like that are hardly going to be mingling with slaves now are they? Even the name "Spaniard" is meaningless considering they got slaves from all around Europe and North Africa back in those days.

@ 0:24 That's the famous, now ancient Colosseum of Rome still standing today. Of course, it's in a little disrepair these days. LOL! If you're not familiar with it, google it. @ 8:10 The women in white are the Vestal Virgins. They always had that prime seat at the Colosseum and other arenas. @ 17:45 More symbolic of his parents and his ancestors like at the first, but they could serve to remember his dead wife and son by as well. @ 20:35 I don't think the boy knew anything, or much. Commodus was threatening the boy's life, compelling her to 'fess up with that story about Claudius while giving her the evil-eye! @ 28:26 Yes, good point and think how Commodus stood between them, daring the archers to shoot him! Good movie alright, well worth watching again! Have another excellent Russell Crowe movie suggestion based on a true story, "A Beautiful Mind" (2001) and please don't do any research on it or it could spoil the surprise. Excellent movie that won four Academy Awards including Best Picture and Director. ✌️😎

This will really blow your mind then. Commodus was actually a real person and actually succeeded Marcus Aurelius and was his son. He also really fought in the arena/Colosseum, but most of his more famous exploits were against animals. I think he was said to have killed 100 animals (maybe tigers) in a day. I believe that he most likely fought other gladiators that would submit to him prior to a death blow because gladiators were valuable (think modern wrestling and the WWE). As far as him fighting beasts, I have no doubt these beasts were hurt (purposefully injured or naturally), sick, or old and on their last leg. He could do it for "glory" and clout and the beasts could be butchered for food once they were killed. Ironically, Commodus was assassinated and betrayed, not by a gladiator or his family, but by his sparring partner (a wrestler I think) and killed. I forgot the sparring partner's name, but I swear it started with a D, like Dionicis (or something similar). So I guess you could say this movie is very loosely based on true events, although I don't recall any famous character from ancient Rome named Maximus.

that was what I was thinking too. he str8 up got shanked. pierced his lung. when they said his arm. I was like I don't think u can die with a pierced arm. lol

You don't become anything in Rome unless you serve in the army. So the odds are Commodus has fought and killed many times.

The story of Maximus is fiction but the real life Commodus was actually assassinated while taking a bath.

Actually Maximus is based a little on Narcissimus why was a famous Gladiator. Narcissimus later assinate Commodus by help of Senate and Commodus sister. Killing Commodus by strangling him in Commodus own pool/bath in his palace. I’am so glad they went with this death of Commodus instead. Imagine Russle Crowe strangling naked Joequin Phoenix in a bath😂

Great great acting! E eryone played their part so so good. The emperors sister, whats her name... red head, biy my gosh is stunningly breathtaking absolutely drop dead gorgeous BEAUTIFUL! She was in the devils advocate and she was beyond sexy in that also. She's a dream!

Wrong. A gladiator can loose a battle but then get clemency by the crowd or/and the emperor. So he live, defeated but alive.
