Ok keyboard warriors, I realise you could fault me on my technique all day here. This is me coming back from a break and thus, yes, my technique, is highly flawed. Thats why I filmed it, to analyse, identify faults and improve. Not to mention its at the end of 1hour of resistance training and 40mins of bag work.
I just posted it to hopefully inspire some to get off their butts and do some training; some real training. I feel too many karate-ka focus on knowledge, and refining technique, and forgo the constant pushing and repetition to build their speed, power, endurance etc. Knowledge is great, but to quote Anthony Robbins, ""Knowledge is only potential power, knowledge-based action is power".
Remember, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Though I don't fully understand what you are doing here (you seem to include elements from point fighting as well western style boxing and kickboxing), I like the way you move. You are fast, strong and have good stamina, and while there's always room for improvement you are doing fine. I agree though that this kind of bag is not really suitable for developing power. If available, you should use an actual heavy bag. Keep going. OSU!

This is the only bag the gym has. We use what we can. And yes, mixing styles of fighting because I enjoy them all.

1. punches - not rolling your fist down to raise shoulder up to protect chin 2. left kick - both arms waving around too much 3. chain punches - no full extensions of arms 4. you step in to throw a right cross and back out 5. you grab the bag repetitively to knee, you don't/can't do that in karate. you are doing elements of other martial arts but not quite doing them elements of karate but not quite doing them.

Back heel lifts up while punching. Not Karate.
@toanthony
@toanthony 7 жыл бұрын
Back heel stays down during kata. When its combat, back heel must lift up. Japanese and Okinawan karate both have heel up for striking. Gichen Funakoshi even wrote that "formal stances are for beginners"

Amusis ok fine. You are right and EVERY sport scientist on the planet is wrong. What is science anyway right?
@toanthony
@toanthony 5 жыл бұрын
Amusis I feel you are closing your mind. Millions of dollars goes into boxing science because there is so much prize money to be made. Heel up every time. More power. Heel up brings more body weight into a strike. Dropping with a low reverse punch can be a little different because you are sinking your weight into the ground to add power. But this is a different technique. And still, heel up is more effective.
@toanthony
@toanthony 5 жыл бұрын
Amusis I thought i did make a point. Lifting the back heel bring the weight forward and the upper body forward of the centre of gravity. As I said, there is millions to be made in boxing, so they study the human body. Boxers therefore hit way harder than karateka. Keeping the heel down doesn’t mean karate. I train in japan and Okinawa regularly and in combat training / kumite the heel is always up. Karate is ever evolving. Even Chojun Miyagi said karate should continue to evolve. That new kata should be developed with new knowledge. Miyagi of course created and taught many. To deny this is crazy. If Miyagi were still alive his karate would look nothing like it did back then because over time we gain new knowledge and evolve. Real karate (traditional) has no kicks above the belt... but look at it now. Real karate has no round kicks, look at it now. Things evolve

Amusis I will watch the link later when I get home. Raising the heel brings more weight forward into the punch. Which is why boxing has evolved from the back foot. Yes there are different ways to generate power but boxing (and karateka who the world over promote lifting the heel) hit harder. The formula for energy (not power but energy) is mass by acceleration (Newton), one can bring more mass forward by raising the heel. And throwing the upper torso forward (forward of the hips) is shown to add more weight (mass) and also adds acceleration to the strike. This is basic science. I do formal stances in kata but there is no dispute which hits harder in combat. Even funakoshi wrote the ‘formal stances’ are only for beginners

Curt Park Gotta love keyboard warriors. Karate is not just the Japanese straight back and punch from the hip. This was posted for my students, filmed in our holidays, to hopefully inspire them to do some training on their break. Secondly, anyone who does not mix up their training is failing to: - Broaden their horizons and understanding. - Adapt to various opponents. -Develop muscle strength, endurance etc.

the bag is useless, it's not suitable for serious training. if something is done in combat, for kata to be of any use,it should be done exactly the same way.
