Today I’ll show how to restore an old corroded aluminum engine cover. The same steps can also be used to paint a valve cover.

Looks great man and I love the idea of the restoration of your Toyota. I'm working on a 1986 Stihl gas trimmer, it was my fathers, he bought it when he bought his property when I was a kid. I am looking forward to giving it back to him (although he might not care lol) I can remember him telling me about things that were built to last and that thing ran for 30 mowing seasons here in Ohio. Like the Toyota your restoring, quality is a rarity. I'm looking for a restoration car/truck if you have any leads or tips. New sub here.

Does the primer need to be specified for aluminum, or does it matter?

The engine primer is good to apply on any metal.

lol because bare sanded aluminum isn't going to quickly corrode again, but hey it looks good enough to sell (if you're one of those kind of people) and that's the point of this guide 😄

@@rickc303oh that was just a little bonus, the cover was the main video. The letters only took about 1 minute to clean up. Figure the car is an ‘88, so that was 34 years worth of corrosion. I don’t think anyone is going to spend an hour or more painting letters that only took a minute to refinish, especially if it only needs done every couple of decades.

@@6thGearGarage exactly, hence looks good enough to sell. It took 34 years to look corroded when starting with painted surface. Now it's bare aluminum and will corrode again at a quicker rate. You brought up a good point about painting the raised letters though, using a small model car brush and black or red paint would've been a really nice addition to your engine bay refreshing video I understand why you did what you did, but the end result looks half hearted. If I was looking at buying a used car and saw a freshly painted/cleaned up engine cover, and only the cover, while everything around it is grungy, that would be an indicator that the current owner approached it as a cheap flip car, and I'm not going to be the sucker to pay for their "improvements" FWIW I keep the engine bay clean and detailed, even in my "beater" cars. I don't like working on dirty engines and it's a source of pride, even if nobody notices/sees except for me Just seemed out of place to go in the same video talking about removing corrosion from aluminum, and going so far as to prime and paint it to do your best at keeping it from returning, only to then proceed in creating the perfect spot for it to begin again just a foot away 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@rickc303 I don't think the letters were ever clear coated from the factory. That's why they eventually had surface corrosion while the rest of the painted valve cover did not. However, I think I'll do another video with a spare valve cover using the method you described because I think that is a better solution. Thanks!
