A Brief History of X (X-Files)

"X" was the codename for one of Fox Mulder's informants and a member of the Men in Black. Although X's real name was never revealed, he became known as "X" or "Mr. X" because Mulder would seek his assistance by marking an "X" in masking tape on his apartment window.

In the Book “ Xfiles Origins: Agent of Chaos .” It’s revealed that X was told to watch Mulder by CSM When Mulder was 17 and actually saved his life by calling the police when he was taken by a serial killer. It’s a great read and though it was never canon I like the extra info on X’s story . Honestly X was one of my favorite characters of the whole series next Mulder , Scully and Skinner.

The death scene for X was done very well, definitely a creepy setting with the music and night theme.

So is that why they always placed an X on the window? Holy shit. That’s a really subtle detail, I always wondered but my guess was totally off lol

Perhaps, but not directly related to this character, I don't think. Pretty sure Mulder was taping an X on the window when he wanted to meet up with 'Deepthroat' as well. But maybe X refers to the role/organisation of both informants that Mulder met with?

It’s toward the end of season 3. And what’s great about that scene is in the very next one, Mulder had obviously gotten the message because he visits the Special representative to the Secretary General.
