Thank you very much. So, it looks like the installers over-sized the main. I guess 3" looked too small going into that old 4" coal-age header. More scrap for us. We're planning to use a 4" header, too, but in steel. They finially got the boiler into the warehouse for delivery to the jobsite. I wonder what condition it's in?

The use of soldered copper piping for steam carrying near boiler piping is, shall we say, contraversial. Boiler manufacturers will not go on record one way or the other. Their reps will say one thing to me (copper BAD!) and something different to someone else ("copper is OK & thank you for choosing our products").

Since I can't be there with you, I can only give you my semi-educated guesses, so here goes: I assume this for a condo/coop or apartment? There might be a lot of souls at stake. How badly is it leaking? Do you have some kind of metering on water usage? If you need to fill it every hour or less, then no, you might be tempting fate. If you haven't already, upgrade the main venting to allow you to operate at the lowest pressure possible, shoot for 1/2 psi. Set it to run on low fire. That's the ONE good thing about The Notorious LGB : hi-lo firing. Round up/ track down ALL known fixable leaks/failed open radiator vents, packing nuts, union nuts. If you haven't already, insulate your mains. Run the system as little as possible, Turn the t-stat way down. Have a professional take apart and thoroughly clean & test your low water cut offs. Check both primary and secondary LWCO at least once/day now. You do have two LWCOs, right? Keep a log of all blow-downs and repairs to CYA. When the new boiler finally arrives (Another LGB? How was it sized? Was a PROPER radiation count done?), make sure it is installed PROPERLY using threaded steel to allow for stress relief. LGBs fail due to the combination of the death by ten-thousand little leaks (and underground mains), and friggin' welded headers acting like a giant crow-bar twisting the boiler apart with every firing cycle.

Thank you for your answer. Company came and replaced old LGB 10 steam boiler. Old one has a hole in. The problem now that water in bouncing in sight glass. They did skimming 2 times. Put some chemicals in and still bouncing. Right now boiler is off and water level shows that boiler is filled full with water. I know thatis not good. Any opinions?

@@fvgametest What sort of auto feeder do you have? Is the near boiler piping installed correctly? Might need to drain & refill a few more times.

@@gordonschweizer5154 do you mean completely drain and refill? All paints installed exactly as was before. It was working with old boiler.

@@fvgametest Yes, I'd drain & refill and see if that improves the steam quality. You might have to do that a couple of times to get the water soluble detergents out of the boiler that were put there by the manufacturing process. The installers might have to return a few more times to do more skimming also.

I am sorry I can't say because I can't see your system. There should be a shut-off valve on your water supply to your boiler somewhere?

@@gordonschweizer5154 it is but when I filled it up and run it the pressure goes up to 8 psi and shuts down until I open drain to it's goes to 5psi and cuts back on please help me out?

My Burnham Jubilee just turned 62 years old. Still have the bill, $1250.00 installed.

@@oldhandyluke This is one of another heating system I use. Average fuel bill around $350.00 a month. I would guess it could reach $500.00 or more if it was the only heating source. I did update the Jubilee, installed a new firebox and new burner.

Yes. I hate 'em. I think the 101a should no longer be made. But people keep buying them, so McDonnell & Miller cynically keeps on making them. And, they cost more than the VXT Feeder!
