8:50 White Qxf7 is also viable. If black Qxf7 back then Bc8#; if black Qh8 keep guarding c8 square, then Qg7 to get a free queen; if black Nd7 to protect the c8 square by its rook and queen, then white Qxd7. black will def be one piece down and lose the game.

Funny how Wei Yi ‘s position after moving his King worked rather well for him f3 square so convenient for Yi’s King seemed like the kind of Game where you would think White would have difficulties with Black attacking but no such offense occurred meanwhile White became the aggressor Awesome Game Wei Yi definitely seems the type to know how to improvise with positive results

In the pause the video moment, I found Qxf7. Is this a bad move? If black Queen recaptures the sacrificed white Queen, then Bc8 checkmate. If black Queen instead retreats to h8, then white Queen to e6, preparing Qc8. To prevent this black must either block with knight and lose that piece, or black Queen must capture on c8 then it's bc8 checkmate

The player with black flat out played the entire game down two pieces. He never touched his queen side knight and rook. In the end he could not even get them into play, They were effectively locked in. Had that black knight even moved once, his passive rook would have at least kept white's queen of his back rank.

NORMATIVE DILUTION is why we have too many "Immortal Games". Over-used labels like "Good Samaritan" for someone who throws a life preserver to a drowning victim. Any humane person would take a minute to try to help another in dire need. If you just let someone drown you are basically evil. The standard for "Good Samaritan" is to invest significant time, money or personal risk to help a total stranger. Normative Dilution now applies to "Immortal Games". What is an Immortal? I'd say a game in which a player (especially Black) who throws his Queen and perhaps a Rook and Bishop into the fire and achieves mate with minor pieces or pawns. Today's game was won by White, down by an exchange and a pawn. Immortality should be forged of sterner stuff. Great Game, to be sure, but not Immortal.
