2:20 Metronome when lifting alone is a great tip. I literally started using a metronome for the first time when lifting a bunch of weeks back as my deads and rack pulls have been getting heavy. It works great, but totally sucks cause it can feel like an eternity at times... but as you say, if you can hang with it the bar will move. My biggest problem is I run outta gas start getting lightheaded while pulling around count 3.5.

You might be holding the valsalva in your mouth instead of throat. Try taking a valsalva with your mouth open and see if that helps.

One effective way to train hanging long enough on deadlift is to use RDL as back off sets. Not a typical RDL with shins straight and stopping below knees, but a sort of hybrid between RDL and touch-&-go deadlift. Don't put the bar back between reps, go down and reverse back up from just an inch from ground, as if it is second rep off the ground. Of course legs will be more bent like in typical deadlift. With heavy loads, it trains the grip, mental tough and strength to grind out heavy singles.

@Quentin Styger the citation is pull on the bar for 5 seconds. However Spencer’s position I think is the right one; If you can’t get into extension, no point in pulling with a cat back.

same, i go through with any lift, but especially on the deadlift, i’ll bail if i can fee my low back giving out (usually on my last set or two), it’s far too dangerous to try and pull through

Great tip... I was looking for a way to INSIST on the pull with my wife, because she does give up too fast. I was telling her that ANYTHING YOU CAN DO FIVE TIMED FOR FIVE REPS is not a "dangerous" weight or a maximum weight, but she was indoctrinated for many years at the all women gyms about all that bullshit we all know in these forums. So now, I'll try this tip and see, she is willing to try the program so we'll see. Thanks a lot for this.

'Tabata Pro' is a good app for timing exercise. Can set a countdown to get ready. Then 5sec for the pull.

Have you tried the Hook Grip? Also, fyi, I've seen elite world-class deadlifters use straps while training (for reps, while still pretty heavy), so they can still be part of your training regime. Finally, there are videos for training grip-strength on KZfaq that you can check out.

@TedMan55
@TedMan55 3 жыл бұрын
deadlifts are more for your low back to begin with, it doesn’t really engage the legs as much as it may seem, with the exception of a lot of tension in the hamstrings. i’d recommend leaving the deadlift for your low back, and just do squats for legs. you could also try romanian deadlifts, which apparently focus more on legs, but i don’t know much about them, so take that with a grain of salt
@timburke127
@timburke127 3 жыл бұрын
As long as you're not lifting with a round back and extending it during the lift, just keep putting 5 more pounds on the bar. If your low back is the weak link right now, it needs to get stronger first before your hamstrings start feeling it.

Lean backwards more, you will use more quad in the pull. However you should see a coach because your leg length and torso length will be the true guide on how this works for You.

What's the risk? Getting too strong? Seriously, what's the risk to proper deadlift form and conservative programming where you gradually increase overload while adhering to strictly good form? Deadlift is safe if you do it correctly.

Lower the weight if you can’t get it off the ground Nonsense to have to keep adding weight. That is how Injuries happen
@freneticfanatic
@freneticfanatic 3 жыл бұрын
It's not a matter of "can't". Most people can't recruit all their muscle fibers all at once and it takes a second or two to break the 90th percentile of muscle recruitment. For others they feel the weight and it feels "too heavy" so they set it back down and are really not trying very hard. This technique addresses both issues.
@blackmetalstrengthtraining6867
@blackmetalstrengthtraining6867 3 жыл бұрын
The point is that you CAN get it off the ground. You just don't think you can. It's not a capability issue. It's a perception issue.

Lmao. Neither maintained neutral spine. Not even close. And you don't strengthen the erector spinae or other muscles of the low back by allowing it to deviate from neutral into flexion and then extension. The low back is a stabile joint, not a mobile joint. You guys need to do your research. Start with Dr. Stu McGill
