@@mrjohnklake the aim is to smoothly apply rudder to align the aircraft with the runway to avoid landing sideways and putting massive loads on the main landing gear. This pilot barely tried to correct the drift at all, at one point putting in rudder in the wrong direction. This was not proper crosswind technique. Anyone can follow the flight directors for an ILS, even in gusty conditions, what counts is how you put the aircraft on the ground. You can see the amount of rudder that was required after touchdown, that should have happened in the flare with a little into wind aileron to maintain the centreline. As a pilot who has been flying in storm Kathleen, it looks like they did not have a clear idea of what they should do and basically froze.

@@njebarr I was considering the down aileron for the crosswind over crabbing but I am still impressed by the video. The rollout did look smooth compared to others that I have seen but I do understand ur point. The wheels are not used to cross angles over 10 degrees I would imagine and could take on structural damage as a result. I am always going to be amazed at something so large that can get back down on the ground in any weather conditions!

I saw no shockwave over the wing. I've seen the aerodynamic condensation/"shockwave" of many super-sonic jet aircraft.

On the contrary. That 380 landing was filmed a year or so ago (storm Dennis as the narrator says). This landing attracted the attention of Etihads chief pilot and an email was sent to all crews to “remind” them of the correct crosswind landing technique. It wasn’t a nice email either. I suspect this Pilot had an email shortly after with an invitation to go back into the simulator. Crosswind landings are not easy so I will not criticise the Pilot in question but, it was not the suggested crosswind landing technique in our manuals. 👍

The shockwave is causing a distortion in the air, making the left part of the "NO STEP" area markings disappear at times. It kinda looks like an encoding error or graphics glitch.

A380 pilot needs to practice his/her rudder skills. Luckily, the landing gear are incredibly tough.

The rudder was deployed at the exact correct moment. The crabbing was professional and perfect. Once the gears made contact with the runway, the rudder is kicked hard to straighten the plane with the centerline. The only other outcome if not done as indicated is the aircraft hard-drifting off the centerline.

@@lonestarhog7407 Actually, the rudder should be used prior to touchdown to align the longitudinal axis of the jet with the centerline of the runway. Although landing sideways is common (and occasionally necessary up to a point), it is usually completely unneeded and considered horrible technique. It's very hard on the tires, the gear and the pax neck. Additionally, now you have a wildly yawing jet on the runway to deal with. Most of the time it's just lousy flying. There are a few Emirates A380 landings on KZfaq where the guys barely kept the jet on the runway.

In my opinion, although it looks impressive , that's a bad technique for landing. A go around may have been the better option, but to land at that angle to the runway would induce all sorts of torsional loads on the landing gear ,wheels, and tyres, and in turn transmit this into the fuselage etc. It's easy to criticise watching someone else in those windy/gusty conditions ,however, although the approach was fine ,the aircraft naturally weathercocks into wind. As the aircraft is in ground effect and ready to flare, a smooth input of the rudder to correct the angle to the runway would have probably made that a textbook crosswind landing. My guess is that aircraft would have had to have a detailed visual inspection after those induced loads.
