It always fascinates me how some runways have dips and hills in them, they look so flat until you look at them lengthwise..

It's the telephoto compression. Actual slope is likely under 1%, which is still a lot in jet operation terms.

@@fredsmith6324 The FAA limit is IIRC 1.5%. I don't know what airport that is, but let's say an 8000 ft runway so each of those upslopes or downslopes is around 1500 ft long. Top of the fuselage is about 17 ft. At the bottom of the dip just before liftoff it doesn't look like the fuselage would be completely hidden from a near-ground-level observer, but let's say yup it just barely would. Then a rough approximation is 17/1500 = 1.1% slope. Welcome to telephoto compression, where "looks like" isn't "is". There's a great video of a DC-10 (MD-10?) landing in San Diego, shot from nearly down-the-runway almost two miles away, which gives the appearance that only a couple of thousand feet was used even though looking at the runway markers it was closer to eight thousand.

I remember landing at Laughlin, NV airport in one of those teeny jets that hold only about 15-20 passengers. The pilot was really young, and the plane was just spanking shiny and new… Anyways, on landing, an air gust jerked this little jet all around and we were just ALL OVER on the place trying to get those three wheels to stay on the ground… It’s funny how QUIET all of the Laughlin partygoers got in one second. I mean we filed off in stone silence. This big ole’ man-boy pilot came out looking all sheepish and apologized to everyone…

That S turn performed by southwest... I'm surprised their company allows that at all. Company policy might have something to say about "stabilized approach criteria" that must be met during each landing but I'm not sure...
@gerardmoran9560
@gerardmoran9560 4 ай бұрын
If you maintain Vapp and the proper descent profile, S-turns are permitted if the crew is satisfied with the visibility and flight conditions. You need to complete it by 500'AGL. S-turns don't help much unless you pull 30° from the approach heading and immediately correct back. You need to assure safe separation from terrain, obstacles and traffic. I did one going into ATL on a visual approach to 8L (runway heading 092°). Just after the outer marker tower cleared us for an S-turn to the north (away from 8R departures and the south runway complex). It was a smooth VMC day. Turned left to 060° and immediately rolled right to rejoin the centerline extended. Preceding traffic cleared as we came up on the approach lights. Wouldn't consider it at night in the rain or if unfamiliar with the airport environment. Cheers

True story - I was flying back from London to LAX in the mid 80s, and the flight was pretty uneventful until we were about to land. I was looking out the window, and I could see the tarmac very clearly as we are about to touchdown, when suddenly the pilot cranked on the engines and started to rise up. I turned around and saw the flight attendant who was totally scared, so I knew something wasn’t right we headed back out over the Pacific Ocean and we banked sharply to the right. As we banked, it was on my side of the aircraft, I looked out of the window, and I could see the reason why we did not land. We had a very near miss with another aircraft that was taking off. I was looking out of my window and I could see, the other aircraft and, it was so clear how close we were. I could see the pilots sunglasses and white shirt and tie as we passed in front of that aircraft. Needless to say, it’s scared the living shit out of me.

It looks like Nice Airport (Aeroport de Côte d'Azur) where the planes are prohibited from flying over the town and land and therefore have to do quite a tight turn over the sea whilst avoiding Mont Boron (which prevents a straight approach). That high ground and wind off the mountain can make things a bit tricky. I once spent a week in Nice and the hotel pool was on the roof and there was a great view over the airport to the east and I noticed how many planes seemed to struggle with the turns.

Missing the runway implies landing on something other than the runway. The title of this video is very misleading. The A380 performs a go around would be more like it. A320neo not a321 (it has 2 doors over the wing)
@Asndsn_P

1:01 that is an a321neo…. If you didn’t notice, it has a double slotted flap which is NOT included on the normal a320. You can tell it has a double slotted flap because of the extra fairings that are smaller than the main ones. Not only that…. the a321 you saw is stretched a bit and longer than a normal a320. NOT ONLY THAT….. the a321neo ALSO has 2 over wing exits and an extra emergency exit behind that (which is really hard to see in the video). NOT ONLY THATTTTTTT……. you can clearly see that there are more windows than usual. ITS AN A321NEO. don’t worry tho, everyone makes mistakes so I hope this helps

It seemed like that s turn wasn't so much to buy time for the SWA plane to land as much as it was to try to maintain separation from the 787 taking off. I think ATC might have tried clearing them too.close together or lost track of what was going on. Or maybe Tahiti took a bit longer than expected to get the departure underway. A close call like that should be looked into by the NTSB. Similar but less worrisome events at other LA airports (particularly BBK) have been making the news.

That's usually an issue with RWY 24L/R at LAX since unlike 25L/R there is no taxiway in between the runways to maintain enough separation for arrivals and departures.

@@jamesm568 right, that too, there never was a close call.

there was no close call, that happens daily at every airport world wide. sometimes separation between takeoff and landing aircraft, particularly in visual conditions, is fairly small so any unexpected delay in the takeoff of the aircraft on the runway can necessitate the go-around of the landing aircraft behind, something that is an utterly normal and benign maneuver. the landing aircraft could see and was well aware of the departing aircraft and hoped it would work out until it became obvious to all involved (aircraft and ATC) it wouldn't at which time a normal go-around was made.
