An Acetylene Tank is typically filled with Gypsum. You could cut both ends off and remove it in a Hydraulic Press or simply dissolve it with Hot, Dilute HCL.

The Masse inside, is designed to absorb the acetone or coolant (DMF). so that when filling the acetylene, it remains evenly distribute and cooled even when under duress! At work we have a list of about 20 porose masses that can be filled, some require retesting every 5 years whilst other 10years. They are Micropor masses which is a mix of natural products, bims, carbon, calcium... and also porous masses which are chemical, traditionally with asbestos fibres, up until th 1990's... In Europe. all masses have different features and maximum gas capacity (g/m2). Source... Acetylene cylinder requalifier/tester based in Germany.

most new acetylene tanks are filled with cork, and the acetylene tanks are done this way because acetylene is very unstable.

Acetylene tanks are filled with Diatomaceous earth and then Acetone is added to the tank. When the acetylene is pumped in it mixes with the acetone which stabilizes it.
@keithjurena93192 жыл бұрын
Depending on year of manufacture, the mass may contain asbestos. Acetylene is unstable above 15 PSI by itself. Dissolved in acetone and DMF, it is stable beyond 30 PSI. This allows more volume than pressure alone allows. The mineral filling absorbs the acetone/DMF liquid so when the acetone is withdrawn, it doesn't bubble like a beer into the regulator. Acetone isn't corrosive, acidic or basic. It is downright scary because of its instability and flammability over a wide range.

Thanks for the lesson on the inerds of the C2H2 tank. From what I've read Agamassan is the substrate in the tank (Wiki), and Acetylene is unstable in it's pure form, hence it is dissolved in Acetone making it safe to transport and use.
@jmyers98533 жыл бұрын
acetylene is unstable by itself, that is why acetylene regulators have a red danger area on the dial past 15 psi, your line pressure should not exceed 15 psi.

The solid porous "matrix" inside the tank is basically gypsum (similar to plaster of paris). Its also called agamassan. Its soaked with acetone which acetylene is highly soluble in under pressure. Acetylene under pressure by itself will convert to explosive peroxides at or above room temperatures. These will make a powerful bomb if acetylene was introduced into an "empty" (normal) gas cylinder.
@peterectasy29575 жыл бұрын
not peroxides. there is no oxygen for such reaction. acetylene above critical pressure polymerize explosively

One other reason for the porous mass in these cylinder is that it acts like a large flash back arrestor.Most of the cylinders that i have retested over a number of years have been full of asbestos.In general no dings to the outer shell...and also not let it dry out as the mass will shrink...Not all that hard to work the numbers out.Tare weight...M.T weight....Full weight...some cylinders will also have the solvent weight on them....makes it really easy....have filled many over the years at home....not one problem....treat like a lady...all will be fine.....how....all starts with a deep freeze.....ex gas company worker...great video keep it up...cheers

Voo Doo Tennessee Just FYI on that...I was exploring trails in my home town about 10 years ago on my dirtbike. I had been on the trail years before and knew the general layout but didn't ride there often. Somebody (perhaps even the owner of the property-I don't know) thought it would be a good idea to lay a telephone pole (about 8 feet of one) across the trail to "keep dirtbikes off". Well, luckily I saw the pole at the last second at about 35-40mph. I was lucky and missed the pole. I did crash but I didn't break my neck like I would have if I would have hit it. About a year later another guy died from the same thing. PLEASE DON'T LAY SHIT ACROSS TRAILS. I don't ride where I'm not wanted or allowed but I've been lost, gone exploring, etc. and that can kill/cripple somebody.

I removed the acet valve, added HCl to dissolve the gyp, rinsed with water, dried with air and heat gun, replaced valve with bbq cylinder valve, filled the 12cf acet tank(now R-290) with propane from my 5gal tank at home..also use a high pressure refill hose with cga540 fitting to refill my oxy small tank from a large oxy tank.

Acetylene tanks are filled with a porous mass, 30 years ago was a asbestos base and before that they used wood ,horse hair an other materials in the early 1900s
@davidmeier18116 жыл бұрын
Acetylene is very unstable as a liquid so it is "dissolved" and it needs to be absorbed in some material to make it stable (It can ignite on it's own). That is another reason you don't want to exceed about 8 psi on the flow because it can ignite due to friction in the line. 40 years ago someone told me they had balsa wood in them but I am not sure. In any case they are not empty inside.

The acetylene in a new bought cylinder can be at 250 (pounds per Sq inch), When in the cylinder it is dissolved in acetone making it stable. When the gas is made, it is at atmospheric pressure. How is it increased to 250 PSI between the acetylene source and the cylinder value. . . At some stage along the pipe it mist be at above 250 PSI for it to flow into the cylinder, Why does it not explode?
@tomoliver84982 жыл бұрын
Because it is absorbed in acetone it is stable.
@marynollaig41242 жыл бұрын
@@tomoliver8498 I know, but how it the new make acetylene moved from origin to the bottle. The cylinder is already filled with acetone. There has to be a pipe with no acetone. The pressure has to be greater than in the bottle to move it in. Why does the gas not explode en route?

well cutting or tortch buring theese tanks is a bad idea, it contains not onley the acetylene (eaven it they are empty they often has some acetylene), but they also contains acetone, and the acetone is always there, eaven when its empty of acetylene, and both acetone and acetylene are flamable and can make an explosion, the acetone is for stabelice the gas, this is why the tanks must be elevatet to a minimum of 30 degree before use
