A collection of pictures taken during my tour of duty onboard Naval Station, Adak, Alaska from January 1972 to June 1973. Adak was a very unique place; lots of history and great hiking, fishing, and hunting. The camaraderie among the Sailors, Marines and civilians on Adak was great and there was a real small town feeling. The population of Adak during my tour was almost 5,000 people. I truly enjoyed my tour on Adak. I'd like to visit Adak again someday.

Thanks for the pictures. Since I was up there April 73, to May 74. These pictures are "current" to us, and many others here. I read all the comments, and the flood gate of memories just opened up, with a big smile! Hunting Caribou and Ptarmigan, fishing Dolly Verden Trout, Hiking some, taking pictures, (sadly about 12 large reels of slides went missing) , watching the Otters play for hours, worked part time briefly at the crab plant and drank a LOT of beer!! You may have seen my car while there. AMBDU, (Adak Mobile Beer Drinking Unit), was stenciled on all four fenders, and on the doors was stenciled, Professor Olswag's Traveling Snake Bite Remedy Show and Truck Repair Service A white 1953 Ford Sedan, faded red lettering 99 days left on the Rock, meant you were "Short" 9 days left, 1 digit midget and when the "NEXT" jacket was handed to you, it was like hitting the lottery!!! But when you took it off and handed it to the "NEXT" guy, walked out the door labeled "Gate 2", got on the plane and sat down, the feeling of leaving something behind was overwhelming. Yup, is dark (all but those 7 days), windy, cold, wet...... and I never did find that Eskimo girl that was Promised to be behind every tree. Looking back, I wouldn't trade that year for anything. Thanks again for the pic's...... Mark T, AMS3 Ground Support Shop. AIMD, under Chief Hamm

I wish I had taken pictures when I was there '85-'87. I was a HM2 with VP-4. I married my wife, a YN1, at Bering Chapel. We spent our honeymoon in one of the MWR Quonset cabins near Finger Bay. My wife and I watched your slides and it brought back a lot of memories. Thank you!

I was there in 68 and 69, at the receiver site by Clam Lagoon. At the base of Mt Adagdak. I LOVED THE SEA OTTERS, THE EAGLES, AND THE UGLY OLD ROTTEN SALMAN. I almost got blown into Clam Lagoon once, but they had just put up a chain link fence for just that reason. I was a radio man RM2. I got so lonely I ran back home and got married to someone I didn't deserve, and we've been together for 50 years now. BEST THING I EVER DID. I LOVED THE PICTURES, THANK YOU!

Was a little shocked to see 16 year old ME in this video 45 years ago! Chief BA Simonson is my dad. Lived there from 71' to 75' and took a picture with Zeke as my graduation picture for the year book. Kid, Willie & Tex were all my friends. I loved the stables, the horses, and giving trail rides with my best friend Melody. As a kid, my brothers and friends would explore and hike in the cold wet freezing weather. Loved seeing the eagles. The Russian boat. We traded with them. I got perfume & my sister got a white round porcupine fish. My dad baptized a few sailors in the Bering sea which made the Paul Harvey how. He sure did turn blue! The pictures are great! So sad to see the state of the island now.

Stationed on Adak Nov. 1972 thru Nov. 1973 -- Marine Barracks. We had about 6 days total during that entire year when the sun actually broke through the constant cloud cover. Pretty dreary place weather wise and was glad when I finally left the island but all the people were great! I have some good memories. We all really loved when the Crab Boats were in dock and our hunters in the barrack would bring in fresh Caribou meat. Good eating with some great friends. Semper Fi.

Yeah, me too. Had a friend (Rod Hall) who worked in the navy photo lab in the old wooden hangar. I got into photography while there in 68-69. Shot thousands of photos and slides, printed the black and whites in the photo lab. Sadly, like you mentioned somewhere over the years lost them all. Watched all the videos I can find about Adak on youtube and it really changed since I was there. We were in the old barracks across the street from the movie theatre building. Used to use the tunnel under the street to go back and forth. I was ASM3 worked in the small building off the main hangar, support equipment. About half way through my year there I got assigned to Special Services I think it was called and became the "captain" of the air station commanders "captains gig". A double ended surf rescue boat. He allowed me and my friends to use it to toodle around the island as we wanted. I so wish I had access to all the photos I took back then, but as you discover pictures are so much more important the more time goes by. At the time it was fresh in my memory and just tossed into a drawer. Great memories. Mike Gaskin, suddenlygod@gmail.com

I was in the station on the side of My. Moffet. 1 day of sunshine during that time. Almost always heavy winds strong enough to push you out of the way you were walking. Tex, I believe we've met. I was on The Rock, April 73 - May 74. Went on a Caribou hunt, stayed in a qunset down by 3 Arm Bay, just above Yakak Peninsula. I remember (not my long suit) 2 guys down there that were taking care of 2 horses, used for the hunt. 1 guys name was Tex, other I thought was Harvey, not sure on the 2nd name. Anyway, I remember 3 things about that week; 1) A #10 tin of Jalapeno's, several boxes of Saltine crackers, and a pound or two of butter on the table. Perfect decor for a hunting camp! 2) I scored a nice bull, 1 of you cut the tongue out 1-1/2 to 2 feet long, stuck it in their mouth and said Take A Picture!! Hung dam near to the belt buckle!! Everybody's got a hobby, photo album! Charm girls. 3) The rule was, last one outta the hut, was to remove the fresh water hose from the wall over the sink. Well, they didn't, the drain plugged up, and the place got flooded. I went outside, pulled the hose outta the wall, came back in and was about 1/2 way back to my bunk when the shots rang out. Someone yelled, "WHAT THE HELL ARE YA DOING?". Reply was calmly , "Puttin some drain holes in" Great maintenance plan! WHO, say's Adak's boring!!! We never met again after that week, but I've never forgotten it. Mark, ASM3, Ground Support Shop, Under Chief Hamm

We put out Survival Barrels around the island that year. Transported them by helicopter. Also, had good hunting for caribou, ptarmigan and sea ducks. I lived at the Seismological Observatory directly across from the high school from July 1868 to July 1971. The only place that the Captain or anyone else had absolutely no control over. My father was Leonard E. Kerry and was the Chief of the Observatory. Adak was fascinating and not necessarily a fun place for a civilian high school teenage girl. I can say that I learned to swear even better than my brother who retired from the Navy as a Master Chief. lol just for ur information, Adak shut down mainly due to lead in the drinking water. They should've kept the base open for obvious reasons as well as part of the Tsunami Warning System. Last I checked there was less than 500 people still there. Would love to talk to u about Adak. Was there as a navy brat in 63-64 and almost went back in 73 while I was in the navy. Remember the earthquake of easter 64. Was sure we were going to get a tidal way. Remember setting up bowling pins at the bowling alley. No automated machines there. Also remember going out to finger bay to get away - my dad did some work on the crab boats and he got paid in king crab.

Great pictures ! I didn't arrive untill Dec. 1977. NAVCOMMSTA became N.S.G.A. (Navel Security Group Activity / same story, different name.) Also no horses etc. less funding if you know what I mean = jimmy carter) Oh, and that ship, It still wasn't there. Thanks for the memories !! Watch the winds !! The Roberts Housing Area photo at about 6:39 is reversed based upon the location of the Red, White & Blue sheds in the background. The New Roberts housing area should be to the right instead of the left in the picture.

(Don't let this picture fool you, it aint me !!)Hi Jim, I was there from Aug '73 - Aug '74. I think I saw your footprints by the National Forest! I was at TSC Adak, out back of the main hanger. Your pic's are priceless, and certainly better than the snapshots I've got. Thankyou !! During my time the deployed detachments at the airfield we had were had VP-50, 47, 48. Due to special needs, VP-19, and another I can't recall. We lived in Birchwood Barracks. Thank you so much for your post. Paul. All the best to you and yours. paul@jwkernsinc.com

I was sent there because I pissed somebody in personal off when in Navy Memphis. I know this because the chief who cut my orders told me so. I was going to ship over, but decided against it at the last moment and they were angry at me. But, I had a good time there and got into photography which became my career path in life. It was dreary though and boring if you didn't get into something. Lots of guys got into stereo equipment, others into booze. It is the end of the world place for sure.
