From 1969, this was The Cowsills most successful single. From the Broadway Show, Hair, they left out the religious themed lyrics from the original song. It reached Number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100's, kept out of Number 1 by another song from Hair, Aquarius/ Let the Sunshine In by The Fifth Dimension. Great memory. Great reaction and choice Harri. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

In 2004 Billy Cowsill was living in Calgary Alberta Canada and playing with his band The Co-Dependants. He was friends with my wife’s sister and her husband. I arranged to have his band play a dance party I organized. He was a fantastic musician and miles away artistically and emotionally from the Cowsills (that’s another whole story). The party was unforgettable and Billy was over the top good. He died a few years after that, too early. Really an unheralded talent from the 60’s.

The Cowsills lost their main talent when their dad kicked Billy out. They never recouped that loss. IMO I got to see them at the Iowa State Fair in 1972.

Great family band! They inspired the make-believe "Partridge Family" TV show with David Cassidy. This is from the musical "Hair" but they had to switch out some of they lyrics for radio play. When they later performed this as adults, they included all of the original lyrics.

Back in the day us Kool Kidz dismissed the 'Sills as "bubblegum", squeaky clean, not drugged out degenerates like our heroes. Our loss. I re-discovered them recently - so talented. Bill had a great voice and John the drummer ended up with the Beach Boys in one of their later incarnations. Their music was so listenable and they got a lot of AM airplay. Hair and Indian Lake are often playing on my internal jukebox. After their peak they wanted to live off their trust fund but apparently their father/manager had burned through it. It took a lot of chutzpah to start a rock group with Mom on board. They were the "family band" template for the Brady Bunch. Thanks for doing this. The Cowsills brought light to a dark world and they still do. God bless 'em

"Carl Reiner was pulling together a television special called "Wonderful World of Pizazz," which celebrated the hippie styling of the day, and wanted The Cowsills to appear on the show performing “Hair," which might explain the exclusion of some parts of the song (this was for network TV after all) " My hair like Jesus wore it Hallelujah I adore it Hallelujah Mary loved her son Why don't my mother love me?

Cowsills are really talented with some great songs! If you ever see an advertisement in your area for the “Happy Together Tour” The Cowsills are always in it. And let me tell you, it’s a great show! There are about 6 groups from the 60’s and they perform their well known hits. All the groups use the same background musicians and they are very talented! Of course the Turtles are in it! If you have a chance to go, you would love it! Thanks Harri… great reaction!

This is my anthem! I'm 68 and have shoulder length hair! FYI, in the day this song came about, long hair on men was a disgrace! The Beatles were heavily criticized for having 'long' hair if you can believe that! What's even funnier is that none of them had long hair. The were so square they were cubical! The Cowsills were the inspiration for the TV show The Partridge Family... it was modeled after them. Nowadays only Susan Cowsill (the youngest girl) and two of her surviving brothers tour and do shows. Mom was a member of the band too... she's the first woman you saw in the video. You should react to their other huge hit, "Rain, the Park, and Everything" known to most people as "I love the Flower Girl". There's a story behind the name too!

These kids did this original arrangement themselves for a comedy variety show they were invited to perform on. All the music you hear performed and sang was performed and pre recorded by them with no one’s help except a day in a studio. These were child musical prodigies. The oldest one at the time I think was 19 or 20. The fact this song with basically no one’s help hit number 2. Too bad their careers were not managed well. But some of them still are active musicians. The youngest boy is the drummer fo4 The Beach Boys when they tour to this day. Thanks for posting

The old TV show The Partridge Family was based on this great family band. So many of their songs are a flash back to the late 60's and early 70's which makes it so fun to listen to them now. And like so many young boys at the time had a crush on Susan. They were at the top of the bubble gum rock until their father caught Bill getting high and fired him from the band. We have lost a few since then. Berry was killed during hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. Luckily the surviving members, including Susan, are still performing and doing great. Others have already other great songs of them, so I won't repeat them. Hang loose, Harri.

Hair by the Cowsills They were asked to do it for a comedy special on TV by Carl Reiner.. They also wrote the theme for the TV show - Love American Style - Do the one from the show and not one live versions. The best version of their 1st hit is - Cowsills "The Rain, The Park, Other Things" From 2013 CD "The Billy Cowsill Benefit" - which was recorded in 2005 before Hurricane Katrina hit and one of their bothers in the video went missing . The one with the hat on the right. They got word months later when they were going to Billies funeral that the body of their missing brother was found.

Oddly, back then there wasn't much thought about shampoos in America... TV commercials plugged Alberto V 05. Mom sometimes would splurge and get great big tubs with squirt tops of Redken salon quality shampoo. To my moms horror we used it as bubble bath so mom removed it from the bath room and made us use bar soap. I remember when the green Prell shampoo came out... They dropped pearls into the clear bottles in the commercial to show how slowly they would sink to the bottom through the green goo product. Mom used to set her hair in curlers using flat left-over Beer or more often her Dippity-Do gel. I was mini me to Dad so as men we leaned towards the Wet-Look hair style with our "DA" hair cuts with the "Wave" in the front" so we used a combo of Vtalis mens Hair Tonic and tube, Brylcreem massaged in our hair, then using your back pants pocket "Unbreakable Hair Comb" you got the... Look my hairs still wet from my recent bath style! The 1950's Supperman hair do.

The song Hair was featured in the Broadway Play and Movie of the same name. In the movie it was sang and danced to by Treat Williams. I've only seen snippets of the play, but the original choreography was impressive. It was reproduced in the wilds of a park for the movie where they made use of the extra room for their dance scenes. Bob Fosse could not have done better.

The Cowsills were and are flat-out great! Surviving members Bob, Susan and Paul still play out and are still terrific. They have done way more than the three or four hits they're most known for. There's a great documentary out there about them that's definitely worth seeing. It strips away the cute image to show the abusive home life they endured. Susan Cowsill has done some tremendous work on her own and with a group called the Continental Drifters. They also have a podcast on KZfaq that's tons of fun.

Talented family for sure. There was another brother who was not in the group. I believe mostly because the dad had a problem with him. The dad was not a good person and the kids had a very difficult life out of public eye. Can you imagine all your siblings having this experience and you were left out by father.

TV variety shows back then went to great lengths to put on farcical backdrops, makeup, and in this case, an ape and wigs to exaggerate performances. Corny then, corny now. The Beatles were certainly victims of producers all over the world that put them in ridiculous costumes and scenarios.
