This was a whole family. Mother and all her kids. They were the inspiration for the American television show "The Partridge Family". Sadly, their father was an abusive jerk. And sadly, many of them have passed away, but they have left their mark.

The Cowsills are great! Bob, Susan and Paul are still out there and sound terrific. You should hear their version of the title song to the controversial play "Hair." Susan also is a member of a first-rate "alt-country" called the Continental Drifters, along with Bangles guitarist Vicki Peterson, who is married to John Cowsill. John Cowsill is the longtime touring drummer for the Beach Boys, so there's your Beach Boys connection!

The Cowsils were a real family band. There were several fake TV bands at about the same time like the Partridge Family but I really enjoyed the Cowsils' music at that time. A real blast from my past.

There was Rock N Roll in the 50s But the children of the early 1960s... Well we were fed what we refer to as "Bubble-Gum music" The Archie's, The Monkees, The 1910 Fruitgum Company, The DeFranco Family. The Partridge Family, Tommy James and the Shondells, Tommy Roe, The Ohio Express, The Cuff Links. With songs like... Judy in Disguise, Build Me Up Buttercup, Simon Says, and The Five Americans song Western Union... Annoyingly (to mom & dad, and older siblings) catchy tunes that got stuck in your head. Many of the songs were made by the recording studios famed Wrecking Crew! They created the songs then invented the pretend bands that toured singing them. But what great songs!!!

I always hear more than a bit of The Mamas and Papas in their tone and harmonies. Beautiful voices, especially the lead singer, and this is the essence of a great, upbeat 1960s pop song.

Their backstory is one of violence and pain at the hands of their abusive manager/father. I cry every time I hear their angelic voices.

I would have pointed you to this song from the 2005 Benefit concert for Billy - The Rain The Park And Other Things - They broke up before 1970 and they got together to raise money for oldest brother Billy's medical bills for cancer. One of the brothers disappeared during hurricane Katrina and it was months later when they were on their way to Billy's' funeral they got word that the body had been found.

Beach Boys connection? Some interesting trivia: Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys once stated he wished they had also recorded “Indian Lake”, a Cowsills hit. So many groups were using tight harmonies in the 60s.

John Cowsill has been a member of the Beach Boy's touring band since 2000. Initially he played keyboards, but moved to the drums in 2008.

This song came out when I was 10years old. It's still as magical today as it was then. It's hard to believe that this was done in the analog age but folk back then made some wonderfully intricate & sophisticated music.

Back in the sixties who wasn't influenced by Brian Wilson and the Beach boys. Many times the song was referred to as the flower girl. Can never Beat those family Harmonies!❤

the flower children of the 60s,what a time to be alive! there was such optimism among them,even as their generation was sent overseas to fight a senseless war in viet nam. i was 6 in 1967,and had two brothers in the army reserves. luckily they were never called up for service. i still remember my mom marking off the days on the calendar to when they were coming home from basic training at fort ord in california. "make love,not war", who can argue with that?

I was a radio-crazy twelve year old kid when this came out, and I loved it, along with so much else of that “flower-pop” era. But a few months later I’d be spending my lawn mowing money on Hendrix, the Vanilla Fudge, Procol Harum, and so much else. Then I became a Ziggy and Lou Reed kid. All of it was glorious, and still is.

Harri, ironically, family member John Cowsill is currently the drummer for the Beach Boys and has been for many years now.

I was born in the 1950"s. This still makes me smile. This was about the fantasy hippy women most of us never met! They also covered "Hair" from the Broadway Musical. Give it a try!

From their 1967 album, The Cowsills, this was a big hit making it to Number 1. Six siblings from R.I., they were the fore runners to The Osmonds. I am so fortunate to have seen the Cowsills in Birmingham Alabama at the Shower of Stars. I think it was 1970 and no doubt they were a amazing family band. Little Susan was so young but the family had their act together. Really miss those days 😊

This is one of my all-time favorite songs, and I'm primarily a rock/metal gal. As a child of the 60s, this music has always represented a beautiful innocence juxtaposed against the backdrop of the Vietnam war and all the other turmoil of that decade. It means so much to me.

Such a blast from the past. A couple of their big hits are "Hair" and "Indian Lake", and several others. Susan stole the show along with the hearts of many young boys throughout the years. Barry tragically died in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina.

Real life family that performed together well into the 2010s. Susan, the little girl still performs today. Amazingly they hit #2 with Hair, kept out of the number 1 slot by Aquarius which is another song from the same musical.

Billy ended up in Vancouver before he passed. In his club show, he would do a "Dead Set" of those he thought would die soon. This was how he broke the news of his own pending demise 17 years ago

I love the flower girl, Susan, who is just the grooviest flower child of all. There is a great live video of then all grown up doing this beautifully. In Charlotte, in 1970, it was voted our favorite song, after a weekend long contest, even beating our own James Taylor's "Fire and Rain"...barely. Pretty groovy town, with a beautiful name shared by your lovely Princess.

Actually this was the first song I really really loved and I was listening to music since 58. I doubt if I'll ever get tired of it and can hear it very much yet. Hair and Indian Lake were the other two I remember but this definitely my favorite. A few family members are still performing and sound very very good

As far as I know, there was no collaboration of the Cowsills with the Beach Boys in the 1960s. However, John Cowsill was part of the touring Beach Boys from 2000 to 2022, playing keyboards and drums.

One of the best Sunshine Pop songs! I loved the Cowsills back in the day. They do a fun cover of Hair. They were the inspiration for the Partridge Family. I hated the fact that they created this fake Partridge Family instead of using the Cowsills, which had been on the table. I was all of 5 or 6 years old but I had my band loyalty! . I would argue that the Mama's and the Papa's were more of an influence than the Beach Boys

This was IMO a perfect pop song, impeccably written, produced, arranged and recorded. It gives me chills almost 60 years later. What more can you say. And you meant the beach Boys, right...but the younger voices...no.

The song was written for The Cowsills by Artie Kornfield and Steve Duboff, and released on their debut album in 1967. It made #2 on the charts! They are a family band (including Mom) and were squeaky clean. They were the inspiration for the TV show, The Partridge Family. Since they were so squeaky clean, you should review their video of the song Hair! It's hilarious (and my personal anthem as I wear my hair long!). Another good song, by Oliver, which was set to a great video, is Good Morning Starshine. That video captures the 1960's Woodstock hippie vibe completely!

The very first time we performed it was in front of Bob Cowsill's son Jason (who was also playing at the same fundraiser with his wife). Talk about nerve-wracking! We asked him at rehearsal if he wanted to join us on the song, but he declined. He said if we had done "Hair," he probably would've jumped in, as he liked that song better.

I hear The Wrecking Crew all over this one. They are the same musicians that The Beach Boys used. The Crew had a sound all its own and were used on many pop hits.

You got me thinking about the similarities in the sound of The Cowsills and The Beach Boys. The link that comes to my mind is the producer. I was thinking Van Dyke Parks(check this guy out) but he never worked with The Cowsills. Great old AM radio song for me!

Harri, you know how you felt when you found the song 'Howzat' by Sherbet - this song was the same for me. Kept hearing it on the radio, but never found out who sung it or what it was called. One day, the film 'Dumb and Dumber' was on tv - and there it was! I waited patiently for the end of the film to read the credits at the end, but I still couldn't get it. Eventually the film came out on DVD and I bought it, purely to find out what this song was called - and of course, none of the songs titles helped, as The Rain, The Park and Other Things, is not mentioned in the lyrics! It was a process of elimination, but I got there in the end!!!

to a degree it does have some sound of Pet Shop Boys due to the lead singer's high pitched feminine voice. The Beach Boys sound does seem to exist in the song but as far as Psychedelia, it isn't so much that as it is 60s pop with a hippy music theme.
