Why would the bookie extend the interpreter credit? You just answered your own question, Dan. He knew the interpreter and Ohtani were best friends, and he might have thought Ohtani would help his friend out if he got into trouble. Perhaps, he guessed that the interpreter could have access to Ohtani's money. Whatever the bookie's reasons were, that does not mean Ohtani actually approved the transactions or knew about what happened. It's not enough to say someone is guilty because he has the motive. You need hard proof that he did it. It's okay to say, I don't know who is telling the truth, because I don't have all the facts. To say otherwise is just speculating and projecting personal biases.

Ippei first met Shohei while interpreting for the Fighters in 2013 when he was 19 years old, and they were like brother's Ippei even said he spent more time with Shohei then his own wife because the schedule and travel. Shohei gave Ippei alot of trust and access to all his private and personal informatuon, including his finances. I just saw an interview on Jeffrey J. Hall show he said, Is it hard to believe that Ippei Mizuhara had access to Shohei Ohtani's bank account? No. It's quite plausible and normal, says Katsunori Kojima, a former interpreter for the Mets/Giants. He handled financial transactions himself for players because of the trust and the schedule they have.

Ohtani deferred to get less money and give's millions to charity, why would he do that if he was losing money on gambling, and he has no history of betting, his own teammates would ask him to go to casinos on road trips, and he would never go, said he's not into it.

I think the thing that strikes me here that Shohei's interpreter was put in front of an ESPN interviewer for 90 minutes by both the Dodgers and a crisis PR firm they hired. This means that Ippei was able to convince two professional organizations that he was trustworthy enough to represent the most valuable asset in the history of North American sports, and that his statements would be in Shohei's best interests. The only way that Shohei's version of this works is if Ippei is a very convincing liar, and this heavily suggests that he is. If he is able to pull that off, then fooling a bank, or fooling a bookie about the resources you have access to isn't that far fetched anymore. That being said, just because a story is plausible doesn't mean it's true, and we probably have a long wait until we know what really happened.

Hard to credit the allegation that Ohtani allowed his flunky to have access to his bank information, and never noticed anything odd about his balance. Also hard to believe that a bookie would allow a flunky to run up a $4.5m debt. A single bookie simply doesn't have enough money himself to allow that scenario unless there was some huge conspiracy by larger gambling interests. But would those larger interests front that much money on the off chance that Ohtani would make it good or worse yet throw a game to cover it up?
@KCiAzN
@KCiAzN Ай бұрын
It’s completely believable that a bookie would allow someone that close to Shohei to run a 4.5 million dollar debt. We have no idea how much access Shohei granted the guy, he could’ve easily granted him power of attorney to access at least a few of his bank accounts since as his interpreter, he would be his communicator with the bank.

It’s factual that ohtani’s money went to an illegal bookie. What’s in question is did he knowingly wire the money or was it wire fraud on Ippei. If it’s proven he made this wire transfer then he’s definitely gonna be fined and most likely suspended by mlb.

Is it possible Otani knew nothing and the friend was able to keep his gambling 100% secret, sure possible but not probable. 2 biggest questions i have, how did he get access to his account and why would the bookie float him that much credit. Looks really bad but ill give Otani the benefit until proven guilty. If this was a case that went to court and you got a jury of 12 (non dodger fans) man, I don't know but I'd be betting they come back with Otani guilty. Good thing its not something that will go to court other than the bookie being charged with something.

Very possible that he had power of attorney with his account, especially since he was more than just an interpreter! With the schedule these guys have, he could have easily been taking care of the financials. because Ippei is his personal assistant. If BofA wanted to talk to Shohei about one of his accounts, Shohei wouldn't know what to say, and it was probably already standard process that the interpreter would handle al his business due to language. If you were in India and the Indian bank called you, what would you do??? You would ask your personal assistant to take the call and ask him what they wanted after.
