I know a few people that would do something like learning the dress the person they hate wants the most and would buy it before they could just to show they bought it first and take the moral high ground and start an argument and force the people they both know to choose sides. There are petty people like that, it's not about the dress. If the woman was rich enough to have so few problems she's rich enough to buy another dress. She did it out of spite.

This is not a Reddit hivemind because of "it's just three dollars". You're making it look like if it were a hundred bucks yeah, THEN he'd be an asshole. The fact that she went crazy for such an insignificant amount is a very clear indicative of why she was so upset. She's not mad because he took money, and she's not mad because she took ANY amount of money. She's mad because it was money she was purposefully hiding away, and now (to her) the whole family knows exactly how money she had saved. And yeah, it depends on the people and the kind of family you have, but in some cases once they know you have money, suddenly EVERYONE needs for you to lend them money - or everyone expects you to pay more than you should because "come on, you have so much saved". The best part being the moment you refuse, you're suddenly a greedy piece of shit who's hoarding money and doesn't want to let go a couple hundred bucks for the family. Edit: even though some comments acknowledge it, most of them are absolutely retarded taking "stealing any amount, even if it's $3 YOU L I T E R A L L Y STOLE FROM YOUR SISTER" as some kind of major unforgiveable sin. The guy above me was right after all, now I feel filthy for trying to defend them.

That bit was extra amusing since Americans on Reddit (ie, the majority) are VERY pro-tipping. I bet if the post was like, "I was unable to give a tip to the delivery driver since there was no cash in the house aside from my sister's stash, AITA?", they would be up in arms how you should've just borrowed $3 from the stash to pay them the tip they deserve.

Seems to me her problem wasn’t financial at its core. She mentions that she used to date people who were ambitious and earned more potent salaries than her current partner, but that they wasn't looking for anything serious. This leads me to believe that it is important to her that her partner has a potent income and is ambitious. Noone’s an asshole. It should never have lasted as long as it did. One can only assume that since they had been dating a year she only meant well when she tried to change him. Who knows what else I may have been missing without me knowing. This incidents made me very protective over my things to the point that it alienates son people. Why am I telling you this? Everyone's acting like it's some huge privacy violation and an unresolvable breach of trust and I'm just sitting here wondering how old these people are because they sound like they are a) actually ten years old and b) do not have siblings that they are close with This isn't some random house guest snooping around your room for money, it's your adult sibling that you've lived with your entire life and from the sound of it are otherwise pretty close to and on good terms with. I'm not saying it's the morally correct thing to do, but as someone with an adult sibling I cannot imagine being that concerned with them walking into my room for what sounds like literally ten seconds and seeing a comically small amount of money basically sitting in the open and borrowing it with the intent to pay it back later. The sister's certainly in her right to be upset, but Reddit is acting like the OP has just committed murder in front of them.

Ok so I just want to comment on something about the last post that I don't think anyone really articulated very well that was going through my head. It was brought up briefly but when it comes to going into a childs room and rummaging through their stuff to find something like money without their permission, that can be seen as a big invasion of privacy to the child and can create trust issues and cause them to be more distanced and closed off in future, EVEN if it was JUST 3 dollars. It's like the classic 'Diary hypothetical': as a concerned parent, do you sneak into your childs room to read their diary to find out how they are going or if they are getting into trouble so you can help/ protect them and risk potentially causing them massive trust and privacy issues with you from then on, even if it was just for their benefit, or do you not read it, knowing they may be keeping big secrets from you? Interestingly, with that, many people feel strongly one side or the other, and i think the same applies here. No it really doesn't matter if it was JUST 3 dollars, it really is the princable of the thing at stake here, an invasion of privacy. Logically speaking, I agree, 3 dollars is nothing and if it was my family I wouldn't mind and would totally understand it. But everyone is differnt, and small things that seem so minor to us can have a big impact on children, depending on their age, something as minor as this can seem like a huge thing and be quite the deal breaker. That being said, the person in question is apparently 20 and should probably be at a stage where they understand these situations a bit more I think, and probably shouldn't have reacted as badly. I don't know her personally of course, what's she's like or how she thinks, but based on what i do know, if everyone is an adult in this situation, it really shouldn't be a big deal I think.
