This is random, but Tati’s second video on James, did get responses that seem to paint her as some type of saint and martyr taking on the sins of the world, not quite the same, but there is some type of fake virtue in that. Jumping in front of the narrative. Not saying Jenna marbles did it for those reasons, but I just wanted to say that.

@@Maineh at least from what I've seen, it was something that would occasionally get brought up, but never in a way that caused a huge uproar - just every now and then someone would mention it, a few people would share the thread, then it'd die down, and it was something that was always small-scale and infrequent enough that Jenna could easily have ignored it and it would just keep fading into the noise. so it's not like nobody ever mentioned it, but it was never really a huge THING that was getting a lot of traction, nobody was ever 'canceling' her, there was never a huge uproar or anything like that. so I think it's something Jenna probably has seen be brought up periodically but it's never been something that threatened her career in any way

Beallow When I was younger, I watched little Britain and it’s insane, i don’t think i ever seen the blackface but I did see the mocking of handicapped people, fat shaming, the occasional bit of homophobia and racism to the WOC from the fat fighters skit. I think the problem isn’t just the show, it’s the lack of education about why stuff like this is wrong, especially towards kids because I remember thinking it was mean but not that it was an actual big issue. Obv it is and I’m glad that it’s been removed from streaming sites. I think education people on things like hate crimes and racism is something that is nearly non-existent which I believe should be part of the curriculum as it’s such a huge issue in the word , a whole lot more than spending several days worth of education on a things like Gaelic and French. I was pre-teen and am now a lot more educated on the subject and just think that these issues are more important to learn than friction and gravity in Primary School.

Another thing, blackface is not an accident and it’s not even really a mistake. Anyone who does blackface went through the steps of planning the skit, dressing themselves, putting on makeup/dark tan, recording the video, editing the video, posting the video, and maybe even writing a description for the video. I think the issue was that it was normalized back then, not saying people don't have the capability to think for themselves but sadly enough it wasn't uncommon to make these edgy "jokes". People were still openly okay with homophobic slurs and outrageous stereotypes that painted other races poorly. People can change and grow as people, we so do every day and to collectively bash someone for a mistake they made is different than bringing it up to them so that they hold themselves accountable. There is nothing like a racist phase but what there is is a disconnect between cultures and people were obviously influenced by this disconnect. Nobody was a good person 10 years ago by today's standards which have risen thankfully. Context is key in these situations. That being said did these people have a poor perception, definitely, does that mean they are incapable of growth, no. lightweightstar The whole idea of there being such a thing as "cancel culture" is a problem and another racist right wing invention. It only got a name and was called "cancel culture" when black people started doing it and holding racist people accountable. People have a right to not support individuals they dislike or believe bring harm to themselves and other people. They don't have to be quiet and pretend to like someone just cause wider society or at least most of the internet accepts that person.

After reading people’s opinions saying cancel culture is toxic and we should allow people room to grow, I supported that. However, when someone continues to be problematic again and again that is telling of a larger issue. When it comes to racism, subtle or passing remarks, it’s funny to see the general public (mainly white with few POC who turn a blind eye) actively pass off that behaviour as “okay”. It is not okay. I don’t believe we should ‘bully’ someone so far they could potentially end their life. What I think cancel culture should be is the individual consumer becoming more conscious of who or what they are giving attention and money to. Just actively avoid problematic people who have proven to be untrustworthy. That is why I refuse to watch Tana, Trisha, Shane, Jeffree, Manny, etc etc etc. Imagine how much more time and self-development you can make by just changing the people you follow and the voices you listen to.
@oliviaok625
@oliviaok625 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for highlighting the fact that we need to remain kind and not stoop to the level of causing problematic people pain because they are underdeveloped and ignorant. It is not an excuse for their behavior, however we can use our power as individuals to not cause harm to them but to not support them either. I feel like a lot of the time people feel like in order to not support someone who has a large platform that they also need to lash out at them when this often times is counter productive to the overall goal of education and immersion. If people are abandoned and left all alone, it makes them question what drove everyone away. If everyone attacks them as they leave then it just causes the person to become resentful and they never learn anything. This is such a tricky situation because while we want to remove power from people who shouldn’t necessarily have such a large weighted voice in our society, we must also be careful of crossing the line of hypocrisy and causing the same harm we were trying to help avoid anyone of feeling in the first place.

In the first 20 seconds of her video, word for word, "I'm being requested that I address things I've done in my past." She also addresses cancel culture several times and the whole guilty by association attitude people online have. She's clearly frustrated, angry and defeated by how vicious people are on the internet. Yes, she's a grown woman who made the choice to leave. She was burnt out, and this was the last straw. But she also meant this to be a statement on how toxic youtube and twitter are. She just put us on time out and told us to think about what we have done. It's important to read between the lines. Jenna could of ignored it and went on but she didn't because she has grown as a person. edit: I also think you should of watch the entire jenna video first. I actually didn't watch much of her old content because I wasn't comfortable with the gender stereotypes. I could tell she'd become much more open-minded as she got older, and I felt comfortable watching that content instead. Thus when she came out with her apology, I WASN'T SURPRISED that she had some other bad stuff she'd done, as I was aware she wasn't a perfect, untouchable person. And I also wasn't surprised when she really took accountability and responsibility and removed herself from the platform. She was obviously having a hard time anyway, and she did what she felt she needed to do. As a white woman, I can accept her change about gender views, but obviously it's not up to me to accept her apology for her past racism. She had a master's degree already when she made those choices, and they were bad ones. She also made this decision in and of herself.

The difference is, is that Jenna is a genuine person who ALWAYS apologises when she messes up. No sad piano music in the background or a "cosy set-up" she just slaps the camera on and goes "hey so I noticed alot of you found an issue with this, sorry about that I did some research and here is why I know now that I am wrong" There's a lack of editing in what she does when apologising and she doesnt put on fake tears. There's a reason people look up to her when it comes to taking accountability because she actually does, and grows from it. How many youtubers can you actually say do the same thing? The REAL reason people are angry is becuase the people who ACTUALLY watch Jenna have watched her grow as a human being and now she feels uncomfortable about it because other people who got KZfaq famous around the same time are being called out for their utterly abhorrent pasts, that are barely pasts for some of them. The two most prominent shitty people being Je&Sh are still around, going to continue to make content and swindle people out of their money and yet fans of Jenna, who still enjoy her content which is just her living her life and showing us a random activity have now lost one of their weekly faves. You can't deny that there is something just unfair about that.

I f****** love this video! This is exactly how I feel. It's really interesting to hear people complain about Jenna being canceled when she closed her channel on her own terms. I don't think she needed to do that but when people complain about cancel culture I literally can only hear them saying that people shouldn't stand up against racism. Now granted, I think that there was a minority of people calling her out and I agree that she was already on her way out but either way I don't think that it's irrational for somebody to be upset about racism. What's so wild to me about all of this is that they're literally asking us to just look at racism and do it and get over it so they can have their fun and that's really f***** up. Most people if they saw a person on the street walking around wearing black face would assume that person probably is a piece of racist s***. They wouldn't sit for months and years figuring out whether or not their interpretation of that person was wrong they would dismiss them immediately and move on. Instead we've had to sit here for years justifying why certain racism is okay if the person has a parent we change. I personally think that Jenna has probably changed and I think that she's really the only person in the conversation who has, but that being said no one owes you forgiveness. And people disengaging from creators who have done racist content are not weak. I think that's what people are always trying to communicate. But if I don't sit there and listen to somebody say the n word I'm just a weakling who isn't strong enough to take it. It takes actually a lot more strength to look at something that you loved and to walk away from it than it does to sit with it and justify why you still engage with it even though it's problematic. That just doesn't really make a ton of sense. So yeah, I really appreciate you making this video. I'm going to make a similar one actually lol

I'm sad that Jenna is leaving, because I love her recent content, but she needed to make that video. She wasn't cancelled, she took responsibility for her actions like an adult and apologized for blatantly racist actions, AS SHE SHOULD HAVE. She needed to do what she did. I'm proud that she's grown from that and it's obvious that she has, but I think her taking a step back is necessary and sets a new precedent for other creators (*cough* jeffree and shane *cough*) to grow tf up and respond in a similar manner. My fellow yts need to keep their mouths SHUT on this issue because it's not our apology to accept or deny. Also shane's "apology". . . it wasn't it. . .

What I think was pretty mature of Jenna in her video, was that she didn’t try to hide the evidence. She showed the clips that were offensive and owned up to them being wrong. She also cut out any parts that were of her crying (you can tell because there are jump cuts) which I appreciated because it’s a KZfaq video so you have time to reign in your emotions. She also brought up her internalised misogyny videos, because she was ashamed of them and wanted to apologise. I think that something Jenna marbles fans have been doing since her video came out is infantilise her. Treating her like she can do no wrong and not actually allowing her to own up to the things she’s done in her past that weren’t okay. She needed to apologise, it’s important. I am sad that she’s leaving, but if this is what she wants than it should be supported. Clearly she wanted to talk about the racism and the internalised misogyny, she wanted to take accountability. She was mad that she even made those videos. She didn’t want to explain them because she was disgusted with her own behavior back then. That was my understanding at least. I think Jenna woke up to what Amanda was saying about building a platform on hurtful content. Sure, Jenna doesn’t make stuff like that now, but she wouldn’t be where she is today on KZfaq if videos like that hadn’t blown up. I think there’s also an aspect of her just generally wanting to leave, but I think ultimately she stepped away because she wanted to answer for her past. Jenna cancelled herself. Thats why people are mad. Because one of thier favs showed up in solidarity with this so called ~cancel culture and took accountability instead of quietly leaning into thier privledge - all anyone is asking for. She showed support to this movement of deplatforming racist, sexist etc., behaviour by using herself as an example; deplatforming herself for having benefited from it. As everyone who has, should. Not to make a hero out of her though. All she did was the right thing. Its just so rare it seems monumental... But it shouldn't, so we shouldnt treat it like that. They want to do what they always do, support the the guilty and blame the victim, but you can taste the cognitive dissonance in this one. It will be no time before theyre turning on her for daring to go against the grain, to ensure no one else feels obliged to do the same. So many will imitate her but i doubt many, if any at all, will truly follow her lead. They can blame cancel culture all they want but they damn well know she didnt have to because cancel culture isnt real. And they know they dont have to either.

She gets to decide when she wants to release videos. She gets to decide what happens to her channel. She isn't brave for being kind of honest and calling a spade a spade. This is literally the bare minimum. Has she even donated any of her massive wealth to anti racist causes. Did she help pay for Breonna Taylor's funeral? What has she actually done to help black and Asian people? Or are her fans going to say she as a wealthy white woman has done enough?

I’m not sure if itzkeisha took it down because all the fact weren’t straight in it or if the racist comments where starting to get really bad. But she took it down this morning.

I still dont understand why white people are accepting the apology... like sis... the apology wasnt for you to accept...tf? As an asian, I appreciate Jenna's apology video and I have genuinely thought of her as a 'good person'. Unlike Jebediah Starfish, Jenna doesn't have a pattern of disgusting behaviour. With that being said , whoever she has offended, it is your choice whether to accept her apology or not.

100% agree. Petition to starting calling 'cancel culture' what is really is, ACCOUNTABILITY CULTURE! I think that emphasises the fact that cancel culture isn't just a form of online bullying in most cases, its holding people accountable for their actions, something we should all be! When we start elevating people above being accountable for their actions, oh boy do we have a problem.

I kinda agree but not really. I think the term cancel culture is being overused. It should mean someone losing their career over either fabricated or over exaggerated bad things they did in the past. Like the Slazo situation. If fans left him because it turned out that he was a horrible boyfriend it wouldn't be a cancel culture. But his ex made it all seem much worse than it was in reality to destroy his career. That's the real cancel culture On the other hand there're countless of truly problematic comedians who get popular by doing offensive jokes, it all blows up, they do non-apology and all is well again. Their fans call it cancel culture even if said comedians don't suffer any greater repercussions from it In conclusion: cancel culture exists just like fake rape allegations exists. They're definitely much rarer than pseudo cancelations and real rape but still are being used against the true victims Also parasocial relationships are inherently toxic

*Jenna* : has made a handful of ignorant jokes ten years ago, privated them and changed her content, and apologized while owning up to all of her past. Then leaves the platform because she does not want to live with the guilt of profiting off the oppression of others. She did all this WITHOUT being cancelled. . *Shane* : has made hundreds (at least) of hateful jokes and comments, continues to associate with and platform known racists, and jokes about being "cancelled" and having scandals, all while giving lame apologies for it. Then sees how people treated Jenna for her apology and copies it beat for beat, except for the whole "taking ownership" stuff. Then continues to advertise merch and profit off of his KZfaq channel, despite conning children out of millions of dollars. . While neither of them should have perpetuated racism on their channels, it is clear that the degree they relied on this oppression is very different, and the differences in their apologies speaks volumes to how remorseful they actually are. . (Also, cancel culture shouldn't even be part of this discussion. If they had really played a major part here, then Jenna would still be on KZfaq and Shane would have lost his posting privilege YEARS ago.)

I'm white so obviously take this comment with the smallest grain of salt: I acknowlege Jenna's mistakes, as I acknowledge my own. She was not canceled, but I wish she could have stayed and continued to show what it means to grow and make efforts to rectify those mistakes. She is not unproblematic at all. What she did was racist and wrong. Jenna has grown and learned from her mistakes and realized what she did was wrong and hurt people. So, I wish she felt she could take a break and come back to showcase what it means to take ownership and make efforts to rectify their past racist behavior. I hope she does eventually come back and do this. I don't want her to come back and just ignore all this, but I also dont think she will. If she does not come back, I wish her all the best. If she does, I hope she does it right. I can't accept her apology or tell people to accept it. That's not my place or my intent. It is also not my intent to change anyone's mind. This is just my hope for this situation, to show what it means to truly take responsibility and attempt to really make efforts to recifty past racist behavior. With this example, hopefully more realize the right way to do it rather than just getting defensive or pop out some fake tears and try to move on with their careers. On the other hand, Shane can go fuck himself. He still, to this day, promotes only problematic white people while playing up his "im poor and fat" persona. He hasn't really learned a damn thing as much as he claims otherwise. I hope he does actually get canceled permanently.
