I dug up an American elm today. It's a couple of weeks late for digging up trees here, but I only just discovered the tree in my garden (hiding under a hedge). When I dug it up, I had to cut the very long tap root. I washed away the soil from the root ball, only to discover that there were NO fine roots in there at all! There is a single fine root coming off the remains of the tap root, and that's it. I guess all the fine roots for this tree were coming off the tap root, and thus got cut off. I am very worried that this tree is not going to make it, but seeing how much you pruned off these roots was very encouraging, especially as this is an older video and I know your elms survived. I hope mine does too!

Best of luck James, planting the tree in bonsai soil and keeping it well watered, will hopefully get it through it's first potting!

@@TheBonsaiZone Yup, got it potted in good bonsai soil and am watering it well and monitoring it closely. I hope it survives - it has an amazing trunk because I guess it got lopped off every spring by the landscapers. Great natural taper and really gnarled bark. If it lives, it's going to be my best bonsai by far.

arthur meireles Thank you, you have some wonderful trees in Brazil, lots of cool native material and I bet you don't have to deal with snow this time of year!
@arthurmeireles59359 жыл бұрын
Nigel Saunders We never have to deal with snow, but the heat prevents us from growing many tradicional bonsai species, such as maples, larches and pines. Our natives are awesome, thank you, and brazilian bonsai people are beginning to work with them too. Hope to see some great trees in the future.

Hey Nigel, would you mind sharing information or even making a small video about your soil mixes for your trees? A video as such would be extremely informative and very helpful to those refining their practice in bonsai. Thanks! Great lengthy videos and great channel!

Steven Nguyen Hi Steven, I will be making a soil video very soon. I have run out of soil and need to mix up some more, I'll have to wait, it's raining today!

By the way, I saw your video where you layered the maple in the ground with a course mix. I was contemplating doing that to a hackberry I'm growing out with about a 5 inch trunk. Keep us posted. I'd like to see how it turns out. The existing root ball is just way to big to even try to think about hacking away at.

Thanks Nigel. I'm thinking about doing a raised bed using granite and a very course builders sand. I want to use straight lava, but the budget won't allow me to at this time. I have friends at the asphalt plant so I should be in pretty good shape. Thanks for the response.

Elm trees are easy and fast growing species for bonsai, especially Chinese elms. They have got be one of my favorites to work with. Have you ever worked on Oak trees?
@TheBonsaiZone9 жыл бұрын
Growing Things I have had some oaks over the years, but they have been large leaf white oaks and I gave them all away to others club members. I planted about 20 English oak seeds, but the squirrels dug them up and took the acorns the next day! I would like a nice oak in the collection, I'll keep my eyes open for one.

I have a pin oak at the moment dug it up as a seedling but I feel I ay have to layer it to get some roots on it . The damn squirrels again it seems they love to wreak havoc on bonsai and gardens alike

Do you make yo ur own bonsai soil? If yes, what all goes into it? From the looks of it it just seems fine gravel.
@TheBonsaiZone6 жыл бұрын
My soil is 1/2 perlite and 1/2 turface. I sift the soil to remove the fine particles and dust. The end result is a particle size of 3 to 4 mm. I water and fertilize often with this mix. Here is my video on this..... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nb55fNOputfclI0.html

I have been contemplating doing something similar to what you have in mind in regards to a grow out garden, but I was leaning more towards a raised bed. My only concern is will the trees be able to grow some decent surface roots, or will they all be fibrous. I have a drop dead gorgeous bougainvillea that I have been growing in a large terracotta pot with straight lava. Everything above the surface is great, the roots however are a different story. They're healthy as can be, but no thick surface roots. I did however grow the tree from nursery stock and thankfully have lots of cuttings to thread graft some roots onto it with. I was told I should have either grown it in the ground first, or used a nursery mix to encourage long stringy roots at first. Oh well, lesson learned. Have you any suggestions on the matter, because I absolutely, positively hate growing anything other than vegetables in nursery/ “shrub" mix. In my opinion, nursery mix is a serial killer.

Eric Brown Hi Eric, your fine surface roots will thicken up over time, keep pruning your root ball to more of a flat root spread. This will thicken up your surface roots, as they will be doing all the growing and supplying the tree with energy. Surface roots that are too thick, can also spoil the miniature look of the tree. The raised growing beds are ideal for growing your pre-bonsai trees. With a good free draining bonsai soil and lots of water and fertilizer, the trees will develop rapidly. You can place a ceramic tile underneath your tree when you plant them to force the roots to grow in a flat radial pattern also. Just be careful to keep your trees watered because when your roots are in a flat plane, they will all dry out at once. This can kill your tree quickly if your roots are near the top of the soil. Good luck, Nigel

elms are a menace for us here..very invasive, but a helluva vigorous grower!
@Jefferdaughter7 жыл бұрын
Invasive? You mean elms are not native to your area?
@hilarycox1007 жыл бұрын
poor word usage.... they are a unruly, dirty tree here.....dropping their seeds and what have. they like to come up in the sediment of asphalt/concrete joints...uuuggghhhh. we end up having to burn the young volunteers as they come up. great tree otherwise....look good on our local golf course

would it have been useful to put rooting hormone on the large cuts?
@TheBonsaiZone8 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure, the trees rooted fine without it, maybe it depends more on the vigor of the tree. Rooting hormone definitely has proven to work on cutting , maybe it would help large cuts also. I'll look into it. Thanks!
