Revenge Of the Prequels Is an ongoing response series that addresses the arguments against the Star Wars Prequels and The Original Creator George Lucas. Watchmojo made a really DUMB video in a Blatant attempt to further smear George Lucas and the Beloved Prequels with misinformation and Poor Argumentation to try and shift the internet hatred away from Disney and back towards the very profitable AntiLucas Status Quo

@@Shadeius I agree in some cases. And there are some that are able to capture the special feeling of Georges star wars. Those in charge of the Mandalorian are doing a fantastic job. When Lucas created Star Wars he had old westerns in mind, and I think that's a massive quality that was lacking in the sequel films. The reason why Mandalorian is doing so good. Because when he did create Star Wars, he wanted to create the next thing that would define generations, because westerns were once the generation defining entertainment, something he grew up with. That is the secrete ingredient for Star Wars, and Disney left that out in my opinion.

I like the prequels. Sure they aren't masterpieces but they're actual stories. "Oh they have so much politics in them that drags it down." "fair enough what do you like though?" "oh Palpatine's rise to power for sure. It was great to see how the emperor took over the empire." "so you hate the politics in the movies, the reason for Palpatine's rise to power, yet you like Palpatine's rise to power?" And George was a major part in and provided direction to the clone wars series. How do you go from "George ruined Star Wars" and then turn around to say "George should have made the prequels like the Clone Wars series." He knew what he was doing. Is he perfect? No, but he had ideas and plans. He had the foresight to understand that adding certain things, like Revan and Bane being in the clone wars series, would be detrimental to the story he wanted to tell. Disney has no foresight like that. They destroyed the universe and the whole storyline and past 6 movies just to try and make more money after The Last Jedi bombed and destroyed the franchise. They revived Sidious, destroying Anakin's character arc, Luke's character arc, the chosen one prophecy, and the whole point of the last movie, and hinted at Revan being canon because they know that they can't do anything creating anything new anymore. So they only want to nostalgia bait to merchandise things they know people will like.

This whole situation, including selling SW to Disney, is due to his drama queen hubris. Did he HAVE to sell SW to Disney? Did they put a gun to his head? No, he did it himself. @@electricdreams8237 He offered the prequels to many people including Spielberg to direct. What can he do if no one wanted to do it? His story is unquestionably visionary. The only adjustments needed were dialogue changes (primarily in AOTC, but frankly I don't think I even noticed anyone talking with Padme in that incredible fireplace outfit), but the STORY was cohesive and there. His story - the creator's vision - is the ONLY story that should have been produced as sequels. AND that is what George Lucas did - he gave his story to be produced by other directors. But these mindless morons in their arrogance threw that out. And to add insult to injury gave us garbage which they artificially added on as official sequels to the saga. No one should be giving thunderous applause to TFA as the sequel to ROTJ. It is the most ridiculous continuation devoid of imagination ever. At least the endless EU stories had some semblance of logic to them and respect for the creator's work.
@electricdreams8237
@electricdreams8237 4 жыл бұрын
@@darkjediknight2923 Oh, I agree with all that you said. However, I don't buy the idea that he "couldn't find anyone to direct". Lol, Hollywood is (or at least was) crawling with excellent craftsman directors who could do any job with aplomb. ESB was made by Irvin Kershner, just one such "craftsman" director and it is the best SW movie by far. And ESB was the perfect example of how to do a franchise properly - a genius producer with strong vision for the franchise as such and overseeing it all together giving out the execution of the movie itself to a director who is a master of the cinematic craft but with no ambition to "subvert" the franchise itself with his ideas. TLJ, for example, is the exact opposite of this model and it shows - a producer with no vision at all giving out the execution of the movie to someone who is all "visions" but lacking in raw craft. Dreadful. But then again, I do not question Lucas' vision or his motives in the prequels. I object to the fact that he simply is not a good director or a good writer. On the other hand, perhaps he is, but the strain of having to do essentially two or three jobs on an immense project affected the quality. There is a reason why it is usual and recommended to have separate persons for writer, director and producer roles on a movie project. It is very easy to go off the rails creatively if you don't have other members of the team balancing you out. Again, Lucas should have concentrated solely on production and "big picture" - for something of a star wars trilogy scope that is quite enough of a task for any man.

@@electricdreams8237 I mean from what I've heard, Spielberg declined and told George he should do them. I don't think we can deny that George created Star Wars and he is a story man. I will forever be grateful for him giving us Star Wars. As Anomaly Inc has noted in a video, ESB was directed by someone else, BUT crucially, George himself did a lot of the editing himself. That fact must not be forgotten. And he self funded his movies and went against the entire movie industry (including his filming techniques). Yes I would concur on the strain of doing multiple jobs and not having a second opinion I guess. I mean I'm not saying I wouldn't adjust the dialogue (in AOTC) and some of the choreography. HOWEVER, I find the story itself gripping, engaging and flowing. It also ties together as one overall saga. That is clearly present. I am sure that George's actual sequels (which they should have produced and the only real definitive version of what happens next) would have made sense, and any flaws in dialogue, or otherwise could have been tweaked. However, the so called sequels (Disney's), is not about tweaking to fix it, but wholesale change because there is no semblance of story, no continuity from ROTJ (Indeed it tears down the running storyline), no connection to an overall saga (the Skywalker saga is thrown out of the window in TFA itself) and no backstory etc. And the dialogue in TFA (except for Han Solo) was awful. I did not find Rey or Finn's crass Earth slang particularly inspiring versus the words of Windu, or Alec Guiness, or Yoda, Palpatine, Leia etc in previous films. There is simply no continuation and therein lies the problem. You can't call something a sequel when it isn't one. They obviously didn't want to produce George's story. Instead they wanted to create a random story - but I suspect they knew no one would buy into it, unless they labelled it the sequels to the OT. Think about it logically - had they simulataneously released two Episode 7's, two Episode 8's and two Episode 9's - with one version based on George's story and the other based on TFA, TLJ and TROS... which do you think would have been more accepted and financially successfully? George's would have had a red Twilek Jedi Hunter, the Whills, Skywalker grandchildren, new Jedi trained by Luke Skywalker as per Yoda's wish, Anakin in the story, reunifying the galaxy over 3 episodes etc. Versus... well I can't even tell you what the hell the story is in TFA etc. Not to mention George wasn't tearing his entire storyline down either!

Mattomic none of the movies you cited used close to the amount of CGI the prequels used, and the prequels went fatter than any of these movies had. As for the CGI in AOTC... 1) why do you compare the last movie of a trilogy, where effects had been used for years and were perfectly mastered, with the second movie of a trilogy, where the effects used were pushing the limits of what was technically feasible at the time ? 2) since when are the kaminoans not CGI marvels ? Even dexter holds up pretty good, and it’s something that couldn’t have been done with practical effects. I would agree with the clones, they are technical marvels for their time, but it was unneeded, and the time and efforts spent doing them would’ve been better used to improve the rest of the effects even more.
@nathanjora7627
@nathanjora7627 4 жыл бұрын
Mattomic « and they all hold up » ... wait, what ? Gollum or the cave trolls hold up better than Grievous or Jar Jar ? Seriously ? Also, LOTR came out after the first prequel movie, and benefited from the advances made by ILM. For the comparison of epVI with epII : all right, my bad, should’ve been paying better attention >< Dexter being a puppet : I agree with the face, but overall I don’t think so, having a four armed character move so naturally, not just his body but through a set would’ve been really difficult. And when you’re pushing the limits of CGI (which as far as I know 2001 didn’t do, nor did the OT, despite both franchise pushing the limits of the technology of their time) it’s inevitable some things will miss, especially if you push them as far as Lucas did. Hell, even in the OT you have misses, like the weird transition from matte paintings to miniature sets in epIV, or the space worm in epV, or Jabba in epVI, far less good looking than in epI, or the sarlacc. Even Yoda is less good as a puppet than as a CGI creation, he moves less organically, doesn’t have near the same level of facial expression, or even just the same freedom of movement, and it shows.
@nathanjora7627
@nathanjora7627 4 жыл бұрын
Mattomic « so actually it was made between TPM and AOTC » Which is why I only references the former in my last message on this point -_- « As for Gollum, he was made intentionally to look a little more unreal in order to prevent him from falling into the uncanny valley » Beside the fact that if true, this wouldn’t necessarily be a good idea since Gollum is supposed to be disturbing, I wasn’t talking about what his face looked like, I was talking about the quality of the effect, the manner in which it blends with the practical environment. « But in contrast to TPM, the balrog is the most impressive CGI character in FOTR » Yeah... And so what ? I didn’t say LOTR had only bad effects, overall they are really good and still hold up pretty good, I said that they had less of them. « Objectively, the Baron looks far superior » ... I don’t even know what character that is ^^ And I saw the trilogy not that long ago :/ « I’m aware with Jar Jar they were Lo-capping but that would only excuse his movements being off, not poor rendering » No, that would be explained by how much more CGI TPM used, and the fact that Jar Jar isn’t badly rendered. For your example of special edition Jabba,I agree with you, but that’s actually a terrible example since he was added in a time when the technology wasn’t enough, and superimposed on a footage where Jabba wasn’t there originally, hence you can’t compare the pros and cons correctly since the scene wasn’t made for Jabba to be there in the first place. Again, Yoda would be a far better example, since he was actually intended to be present as a CGI creation in the prequels, and he looks far better than puppet Yoda. Well... Looks, not necessarily, but e is able to do and convey far more than puppet Yoda, thanks to more realistic and diverse facial expressions, more realistic and diverse body movements, etc.

@@papaAJ88 did they though? George was innovating with his use of CGI, while it's used now because it's easier and cheaper. George had a vision for how he wanted things to look and it took CGI as well as more practical effects than he ever used in the OT (which is well documented). I will say that CGI can start to look outdated faster than good practical effects. But if you look at other films from the time, I think you'll find the prequels still hold up quite well. And Revenge of the Sith for the most part looks as good as modern CGI, though it's over 15 years old. Anyway, if merely using CGI is enough to ruin a movie for you, I wonder how many films you actually like? And if you just wanted Star Wars to look and feel exactly as it did in the OT, I think you're putting unreasonable limitations on a visionary director.

What ROTS show us? I agree that the Prequels have wooden acting, boring conversations, and other criticism. But, even the worst Star Wars movie get’s a 5/10. Which is good for 9 films and 2 spin offs. Also, Star Wars isn’t a movie franchise. It’s a FRANCHISE. The movies take about 30% of Star Wars. The TV shows, Video Games, Comic Books, etc make about 70% of Star Wars. You can’t say Star Wars is mostly bad when your only talking about the movies. No matter how much the Prequels or Sequels are bad it only takes up 15%. And no matter how superior the OG trilogy is compared to the Prequels and Sequels. Star Wars is a franchise, not a Cinematic Universe like Marvel. Also, in all Star Wars movies there is at least ONE scene that made you go: “Aw man! This is awesome!” In conclusion I disagree with you heavily, but I respect your opinion.

George Lucas is to Star Wars what J.R.R. Tolkien is to The Lord of the Rings, the entire idea sprang from his mind and his experiences. Unfortunately Disney didn't show Star Wars as much respect as Peter Jackson did for Tolkien's work, when he decided to adapt the LOTR books into movies he spent ten years pre-planning to ensure that everything was perfect. This is all before the sets were even built. The fact that the sequel trilogy turned out such a mess is because the executives rushed it out to cash in, without giving it the planning it needed.

The prequels are crap. If they weren't crap Lucas would have never sold SW to Disney... which then made even worse movies. There you have it - it is not either or. It is not Lucas vs Disney. They both made crap movies. You don't have to lie to yourself that prequels are now somehow magically good movies in order to dis Disney. Again, Lucas wouldn't have sold SW if they were any good. And Lucas is so overrated that it is sickening. His first wife saved original SW - he wanted Han Solo to be an alien... can you imagine? And Ewoks are straight out of his "imagination". Most of the good stuff in the originals are someone else's idea. He is good at the "big picture" but as an actual actualizer of that picture? Dreadful. He was manageable back in the day while he was young and people still had the balls to tell him off, but with prequels he surrounded himself with yes-men and the results are quite obvious to everyone except rose-tint glasses fanbois. You know what was his true golden age? Lucasarts computer games. And why is that? Because he couldn't program or game design himself so he couldn't screw the games up. Thankfully he just gave the dev teams his "big picture" (which is his true genius) and let other people actually make his these visions real. No such wisdom with prequels where he somehow got it into his head that he can actually write and direct (which he can't).

Electric Dreams « If they weren’t crap Lucas would have never sold SW to Disney » ... yeah, so we’ll completely ignore the fact that he got criticized for years ? I mean, maybe the critics were fair (they weren’t), but it’s still the critics of the prequels, not the prequels’ quality that pushed him to sell to Disney. And what you said is misinformation, not actually true -_- He wasn’t surrounded by yesmen, nor did he want to direct and write, he wanted other people to do it, and the editions of the OT wasn’t made only by his wife, or without his consent. And true enough, we don’t need to like the prequels to despise Disney’s movies. It’s just that for many, Disney’s movies being so bad allowed them to finally see what the prequels brought to the table, and not just their bad aspects, making them more enjoyable than they were. That, and the fact that many prequel lovers could finally go out from the wood and say « told ya, SW without Lucas ain’t SW ». « Most of the good stuff in the originals is someone else’s idea » Citation needed -_-

@@judasbooth5455 You're delusional if you genuinely believe that. Rian Johnson is an idiot. George Lucas is a genius. His innovations were so great that he redefined the film industry TWICE with Star Wars alone. Even if he had never made Indiana Jones, his impact on the film industry would still have been immense because Star Wars pushed it to new heights with both the Originals and the Prequels. He pioneered motion capture technology before Lord of the Rings made it popular with Gollum and Attack of the Clones led the charge into the digital age of filmmaking. And on top of all that, George actually understands story telling while Johnson can't even grasp the basics such as writing a consistent character or applying set up and payoff. George's creativity was off the charts. Christopher Lee, one of the worlds most experienced actors who also lived a very interesting life outside of the film industry, said "George's imagination is unlike anything I think I've ever come across" before confirming that George created Dooku's entire backstory, right down to where he was born, despite Dooku only being in half of Attack of the Clones and one scene in Revenge of the Sith. Keep in mind that Christopher Lee actually met J.R.R Tolkien, so it's no small thing for him to say that George's imagination is the most impressive one he'd ever encountered. George Lucas is vastly more intelligent than Rian Johnson. He has more talent, creativity and innovation in his pinky than Johnson has in his entire body.

Shamus _ They are objectively not though. Most of the acting and dialogue are fine, the plot is coherent, the story efficiently conveyed, there are lots of reasons to root for the characters, the music wonderful, the effects oftentime good, the scenery just gorgeous, or if you prefer less subjective terms : incredibly vivid, rich and detailed, as well as conveying very efficiently the atmosphere of the places they represent, the action is well shot, paced, and edited, and the choreographies are straight up amongst the best you can find in cinema. Are they master pieces ? ... I don’t know. Are they as good as the originals, or close ? I’d say so. EpII ain’t worse than epIV, and epIII is probably as good as epV or VI.

"May always be remembered as it's awkward puberty." To be completely fair to WatchMojo, Attack of the Clones will be remembered as Anakin Skywalker's awkward puberty. What those idiots don't realise is that this was fully intentional on George Lucas' part. As for The Phantom Menace, that was intentionally designed for children and the butthurt OT fanatics ironically come across as more immature than the children who love that movie. Allow C.S. Lewis to explain why. "Critics who treat adult as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But the on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development: When I was ten I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up." I don't know if George Lucas has ever read this quote but he certainly has the same mindset. And judging by how childish the Prequel haters are, despite their pathetic attempts to present themselves as mature, C.S Lewis was 100% right.

@risso2309
@risso2309 4 жыл бұрын
@@Matt90Nine What I meant by "pissing" is that they make the last six movies redundant. The main villain from both trilogies comes back and the galaxy is threatened by a force that's essentially the Empire in all but name, making the struggle of the OT especially pointless since, by the end of TLJ, were back at square one. They also turned the characters into shadows of their former selves, Han is once again a deadbeat with little explanation, Luke is a cynical old failure, and Leia is mostly just a prop in two of the three new movies. The narrative of the sequels is nonsensical, as we're never told how large the First Order is or how they managed to amass such power despite being a REMNANT of the Empire that developed in an unknown part of space, (one where, logically, resources would be EXTREMELY limited,) as well as how they managed to take over most of the galaxy in such a short amount of time after a devastating loss. As to your point about most audiences...yeah no they DO care about lore and worldbuilding, as, after a movie they usually look stuff up if they enjoyed it and by the next movie they want to see how that carries over, or they'll think about some things they didn't understand and look it up to see if there's an explanation. If it makes sense, fine, if it doesn't, their opinion of the film diminishes and their expectations for the next film lower. Films aren't (purely) spectacle, they're also character driven and many of the greatest films have a great cast of characters existing within an even greater world. Audiences aren't dumbasses that want flashy lights in their faces with hollow as hell characters yapping in between, they want rich worlds and characters SUPPLEMENTED with great special effects. Honestly the fact you have this reasoning tells me you're one of those people who just doesn't think. If you are, then go to the Fast and the Furious franchise, I'm sure they'd love more cash cows they can milk.
@nathanjora7627
@nathanjora7627 4 жыл бұрын
Mattomic The sequels absolutely « pissed on itself », and much more than the OT ever did. Hux is a cunning Nazi wannabe ? He becomes an idiot kept around to play with. The holdo maneuver ? 1/1000000000 chances to make it, so it means that holdo has almost no chance of achieving anything else than fleeing. The Resistance being almost dead ? Who cares, they can unite thousands of ships in an afternoon if they want, etc. Also, Sui Gon’s existence doesn’t contradict the OT, neither do the midichlorians, and Yoda using the force for attack 20/30 years BEFORE saying that the force shouldn’t be used for attack isn’t exactly a betrayal of his character either, especially since... You know... He didn’t ? He always used the force either to save people (ep2 protecting Anakin and Obi Wan) or to defend himself from force attacks (ep2 against Dooku and ep3 against Palpatine). And when did Leia (a FORCE SENSITIVE PERSON, the type that can have VISIONS) said she remembered Padme ? She said she remembered her mother (that she indeed saw) and that she had memories of her being kind. Now, does she have memories dating back to when she was just born ? Why not. Memories of her first adoptive mother ? Why not. Visions of Padme ? Why not. All in all, we don’t know but it’s far less of a retcon, if it’s a retcon, than anything the sequel did. Also, yes, Obi Wan Kenobi kept his surname (which we don’t know how frequent it is) I a galaxy of billions of people, on the planet that Vader least wants to approach. I don’t see how that’s a problem -_- Also what you said is wrong, general audiences want an entertaining movie, period. Generally speaking, the movie will have to be pretty darn bad for them to see it right away, but even then it doesn’t prevent them from not giving a damn to that (ex : transformers). TFA doesn’t have a simple cohesive plot, it has a nonsensical storyline full of idiotic coincidences. As for the modern VFX... It was in what, 2017, and it had the biggest Hollywood studio to fund it, with one of the best team to carry the job ? Wow, it sure is an achievement that their VFX looked good -_- And I don’t get what you mean about people now praising the prequels ? I mean I literally don’t understand the sentence, could you perhaps rephrase it ? As for the filmmaking qualities : The prequels had a better more cohesive plot, character arcs, just as good performances, better or just as good camera work, better pacing, editing, and yeah sure, it had less good special effects, but they were much more innovative, in fact outright groundbreaking, and many if not most of them still held up pretty well. All in all saying that they are less good is true but absolutely not a testament to the better filmmaking, just to technological progress originally pushed forward by the prequels. And yes, you would notice if TPM was removed -_- You’d wonder why this Qui Gon Jin’s name comes up in epII and III, whose voice it is in epII when Anakin looses his sh*t, why the hell do characters keep talking about so much interactions we didn’t see. You’d wonder also why, for example, Palpatine knows so much about Anakin in particular, including very private matters like his relationship with Padme, and I’m talking about how he could’ve known that *before* epIII, so before we saw them chatting so much with one another. You’d also lose very important pieces of the narrative, like how Palpatine became chancellor, why is it significant that Gunray is still viceroy, what the fact that the clone army is a decade old means in epII, why was Anakin even a padawan if he came from a backwater planet, and why it was that his mother didn’t go with him, etc.

Mattomic « But ‘because it’s Star Wars’, audiences should give a shit » Not because it’s Star Wars, but because it’s a single series with a single timeline, unlike James Bond where there are multiple iterations of the thing. A better example would’ve been something like Harry Potter, and I can guarantee you that if HP4 had Harry Potter transform into a drunken punk that does zero during the story whilst a young witch from hufflepuff goes on to kill Voldemort, the general audiences would’ve given a damn. The fact that SW episodes were sufficiently spaced so that no one apart from someone sufficiently interested in SW could understand that it was the same kind of atrocity, does not change anything to the fact that it was indeed the same kind of abomination. Also the FaF franchise is a really bad example, since the overlap in core audiences is likely quite small -_- Meaning that maybe they want just flashy lights and the lot, but apparently (and it’s confirmed by box office) having flashy bits isn’t enough when the rest is utter crap. « Just let people watch what they want » Nobody advocated for stopping people from watching what they want (though people advocating for mediocrity certainly aren’t helping people with a certain level of standard get the entertainment they desire -_-), we are merely criticizing what *we* want to criticize, if this has an impact on you, then I’m honestly sorry, and even if I’m honestly sorry, I won’t stop.
