This is, by far, the best review I've seen on the Arteza paints. Thorough and well facted vs. opinions. I'm finding that with all these private label companies (Arteza, Meeden, and newcomer, Wanmei) are buying lots of product at very low prices and reselling at a premium, which for them, is still way below actual high end paints. To me, they're great for people who just want to play - I mean, perfect. But, for anyone beyond the casual hobbyist or beginner, well, disappointment may be in the results. I've decided that the FREE pricetag usually comes with the "you get what you pay for" cliché, but not without reason. I also will no longer work for these companies for the price of mediocre art supplies which I end up donating to local schools. Just my take, but thank you thank you thank you for reviewing this one, because I definitely had my eye on it and wondered. I feel much the same about their watercolor pencils, too. Stay well my friend and great job on this one! :)

@@MeowMeowKapow lol!! "No soup - er, watercolor pan sets - for you!!!" I look forward to a formal review with all the beefs (I'm vegetarian, but still). It's an interesting way to market: give people like us free stuff in exchange for massive word of mouth advertising. Combine all the work you, me, and all the other content people have done, and we're looking at hundreds of thousands in marketing costs saved by giving out $40-50 sets that cost only $3-8 to manufacture. But hey, as long as both sides are okay with it, then it's a win-win. I just don't need the supplies, so for me, I have one more review and then I'm done. It's all good. :)

I’ve got to say.... a couple of your videos I remembered you saying that you supported these companies because they brin diversity to the market or something, and I thought “....really? But they’re so.....ugh.” (Although honestly, I’m okay with needed right now since they’re priced appropriately) so I’m actually a bit relieved to see you saying you’re not really feelin’ ‘em, either. =>.

@@MeowMeowKapow I am guilty as charged. lol!! I was overenthusiastic a few months ago by the prospect of companies like Arteza, Meeden, Wanmei, and others, coming onto the scene to present comparable products to the bigger names. However, what I learned is that they are only private label companies repackaging no-brand items they purchase in lots from China (I was a package designer for an import/export company back in the early 90s and this is exactly what we did, too). Arteza spends a lot and they're trying to get a foothold, which I like, but they are leveraging the social media communities to do it, sending out free product in exchange for valuable referrals, when, in my opinion, most of us probably wouldn't have bought them in the first place. I don't blame them, but I wish more reviewers were like you and gave an honest opinion about them. One very popular YT influencer (and I use that term specifically) recently reviewed Arteza products and you'd have thought they were the greatest art supplies ever. I rolled my eyes, wishing they'd been more open and honest, and not use clever video editing to show that "surprised" reaction and all. Still, everyone has their approach. For me, I lost my taste for these third party companies because of the aggressive nature. I do still think it's fantastic to have inexpensive options on the market for people who don't want to fork over big $$$ on the big names. Sorry for rambling. I do that after coffee! ;)

This this this this this. All of this. So much all of this that it hurts. I was looking at Arteza’s packaging and LOVED (note:sarcasm) that they claim to be an American company, but also they note that the products are made in freakin’ China. Just because you bought an empty office building in Delaware and labeled it your headquarters doesn’t really make you an American company. There’s sooooooo much deception going on and I just...sigh. I need more time to prep my full breakdown video because this week’s double review took it out of me, but there’s so much that needs to be addressed.

I really appreciate your honesty. I have seen these reviewed a few times and everyone is just gaga over everything Arteza. I think you are the first person to actually be critical of them. It is very rare that anyone is critical of Arteza products, something I personally find suspicious. I only have one Arteza product and that is the woodless watercolor pencils and I really dislike them.

I haven’t even REALLY gone in on them yet, but I am starting to suspect what my opinions are, and I am also a little confused about al the other reviews I’ve seen, even from people I trust.

Thank you! This is the first video I've seen with any real in depth criticism towards Arteza. Usually when something sounds too good to be true it is not worth it. While I havent tried their paints I have watched a lot of people paint with them and it looks like they fight them and have dull pieces when they are done working with them. It has left me very confused.

I've never used Arteza watercolors. I admit to being a bit of a snob with my watercolors, and I'd rather have fewer, higher quality paints than a bunch of cheap ones that frustrate me. :P I did pick up their gouache to try out that medium, and, as a total novice to it, they seem... solidly fine. Like, definitely not amazing, but also not terrible. I'm curious to see if that's how their watercolors are as well, but my expectation is that the watercolors will be worse, because watercolors seem like they're a very tricky medium to do well, with how significant transparency and layering are. An opaque medium seems like it has more of middle-ground between worthwhile and just not. But, maybe that's just my watercolor bias talking. :P Also, hello, Bubba! I hope you are having a wonderful day today! ^^ My cats have been having a truly exceptional day, because this morning there was a SQUIRREL ON THE WINDOWSILL and just a few minutes ago there was A LIZARD ON THE PATIO!!!!!!! Best day of all the days ever! :D

I think your suspicious and assumptions are spot on, as far as gouache vs watercolor. OH MY GOSH BEST KITTY DAY!!! Bubba’s just sleepin’ in his big boy bed, so I’m having a great time watching his cuteness at least!

I'm just a rank amateur but I think the pricing is OK just for something different to play around with. I mainly use Cotman paints. This (Arteza) was very affordable for 36 paints and the metal container. I found a coupon and got it for $30. To me it's worth that. I wouldn't pay a lot more for it however. I don't care where the paints are made. It would be nice to have the specs on the paint though. I think a lot of reviewers aren't really doing what I would call "artistic watercolor painting". There is a lot of "arts and crafts" on KZfaq :)

Had to click really quickly. Its 12am right now and Im still not asleep XD. Thanks for sharing your insights on these, Kat! I’ve been considering these paints as probably my first set of studio paints, since pretty much all my watercolors were travel palletes, and I heard some good reviews on them, especially from Emily Artful, but she also stated the same things about the color selection and no pigment info. I do hope to see more info from your experience with them, Kat! Hi Bubba! My little one, Azula got a fungal infection. I do hope she gets better

Oh no! Fungal infection?!?! Poor baby. :( Live your life and all that, but I would recommend waiting until I really get a chance to go in-depth on these paints. I believe I am starting to form an opinion on them and, for the price, might seek out equivalent alternatives.

I'd encourage you instead to consider a good professional set of paints. You can get one of the M Graham 15mL tube 5 colour sets on Amazon for about $25-30 USD. Meow meow has reviewed several of these sets. I bought a set of them too - they are amazing paints.

aartadventure I’d love to try them! I’ve seen a bunch of these sets in a tiny art store near where I live, so I might give them a go....once I get my savings back up XD

This review has got me curious I’m not a big fan of so many cool colors or the dustiness however the browns look kind of nice plus they look like they re-wet well, I might consider getting the 12 color set after I get all the Daniel Smith colors I’ve been eyeing down 😂

I’m personally a big fan of cool colors, so that doesn’t bother me at all. They did reactivate without a problem, but I’d recommend maybe waiting until I put them through a full range of tests before pulling the trigger on them? I mean, live your life and all but they for sure aren’t even close to the quality of Daniel Smith so they’d be hugely different.

Hm. I haven’t used my cotmans for a while so I’m not sure where these would stand in comparison. Price wise, I think cotman’s actually a bit less expensive, though they typically come in plastic boxes rather than metal if that’s a deciding factor for you. What do you use your cotmans for right now? Asking because if you use them for sketchbook work then it probably doesn’t matter, but if you’re using it for display or sellable work, cotman at least has pigment information and you’d be able to know which colors are and aren’t fugitive.

Meow Meow Kapow just sketchbook stuff the problem i have with cotman is how hard they are to rewet however I do appreciate knowing the pigment info and tbh it probably is just the metal tin that’s drawing me in to the arteza set lol but I know I could probably get a meeden tin for cheaper
