Welcome back to another episode of The Viall Files: Ask Nick Edition! Before we get to our callers, we talk about the toys we had when we were kids…
Our first caller is ‘dating’ a guy who’s in an open relationship with someone else. She’s afraid to ask him for commitment and is thus wondering if sleeping with his friend would be wrong. Our second caller lied to her boyfriend, and now he thinks everything she does is a lie. What was her initial lie and how should she rebuild his trust? Our final caller feels like she's parenting her fiance’s kids for her. Is this due to differentiating perspectives on parenting, or does her fiance need to step up?
“Checking in should feel like consideration, not controlling”

I think Nick's pov on open/alternative relationships is getting more nuanced and I appreciate that! As someone who's had positive experiences with polyamory, the takes on this show can feel a little myopic sometimes, but I thought Nick did a good job investigating the first caller's feelings on the open relationship and determining it wasn't for her without automatically assuming she was deluding herself or something. Loved it!

I feel bad for her And what she doesn’t see is that he’s getting everything and she is second. I would bet big a money he’s telling the “girlfriend” the same things he’s telling her. Please don't keep lying to yourself about your feelings and needs, and start protecting your heart. The longer you keep going along what's good for HIM, the more it's gonna hurt when it ends because he's moving to be with his GF. Good luck and keep us posted.

7:38 Fate and free will both exist. It isn’t one or the other. They can both simultaneously exist and both be true. Fate are the predestined things we are meant to experience. Free will are the choices we make between each predestined point. And yes, sometimes we can make a choice that goes against the “intended” plan, but that’s where an understanding of a larger omnipresent being, God, helps fill in gaps. There are numerous stories of people’s lives being completely redirected. That’s when God steps in and goes “woah, you’re way off course from where we intended you to be. Let’s redirect you a little.” People think it has to be science or religion. God or the Big Bang. I think it all exists, but that there is an overarching being that somehow connects us all, and can be experienced as the truest form of love we’ll ever know.
@dcnats92
@dcnats92 3 ай бұрын
There’s most likely no such thing as fate. But also you believe in a god so I understand how that can be your worldview. As far as stories of people being redirected, imo that is luck; crossing the warmth and kindness of other people; and/or someone coming across a situation that jolts them out of their habit of making bad decisions. Regardless, I love Nick’s viewpoint that life just a result of your choices and the choices of those around you. That’s really all it is unless you believe in some deity that is also active in each and every person’s everyday life or total life path. Accountability is huge and missing for many people and communities in today’s world. I appreciate someone talking about that important ideology.

Caller 2 has a lot more problems in her relationship than the fact that she lied to him…. Her boyfriend has major issues with trust, communication, emotional intimacy… I think he is the problem and her acting out was a symptom, not the cause, of their issues. Her bf needs to get on board with being in this relationship. It sounds like the caller is having this whole relationship alone. She’s doing all the work. And there is a theme across all Ask Nicks of women being afraid/unable to communicate their true feelings. You don’t have a relationship if he doesn’t know how you feel and you don’t feel safe enough to tell him. You have a farce. This is a big mess.

I really love the opening discussion because I have these types of conversations with my friends all the time. I would like to give a christian I think life is changing choice like input. When I think of the phrase "things happens for a reason. " it has more to do with the things that you can't control rather than the things that you can. For example, you don't get to choose what kind of family you're born into whether they're rich or poor, but you can decide what to do with your life and get yourself to a better situation than you were given. A lot of people like to argue whether life is about chance or by choice why can't it be both?

Our lives are perfectly planned by us , free will, before we were even born. Even the ppl we meet on the way , to bring us to the ppl we are supposed to be with us. Such as your wife Natalie etc…when we enter the world, we’re giving a veil of unforgetfulness. that way we navigate through life by choices, intuition, etc., To follow the plan, choices are greatly a part of it.

Again, he knew his path they say we also time our death and the way we die, we’re given a veil of forgetfulness when we enter this world..,there is an afterlife, we are spiritual, people living in a physical body and physical world, for now ,so things also happen for a reason and choices matter

Christian here 🙋🏼‍♀️ Yes, ultimately the earth is not our home, we are citizens of heaven. However, this life doesn’t exist to get to heaven, it’s to get other people to know and follow Jesus (the great commission). Free will is a gift, but that’s why we were given scripture; so we could use that as guidance for the decisions we make. The Bible isn’t a rule book, it is an outline for a godly life that serves to protect us (morally) from our sin (due to living in a fallen world).

Caller 2 Nick missed the boat. I’ve been that young woman. She acted out with the other guy because her needs are NOT getting met. Instead of condemning, condescending calendars and check-ins, there’s something missing here. She didn’t give out her number and flirt from a vacuum: something is up that she’s not copping to. Something is missing. Nick gives a very triggered response that misses this nuance.

I deffffffinitely don’t think everything happens for a reason lol. I think life sucks sometimes and hard things happen, and certainly there can be a silver lining in bad experiences, but that doesn’t mean there’s a reason for it to have happened in the first place. My mom dying from cancer before she was able to watch her children get married or meet her grandchildren…. what could possibly be the “reason” for that to happen?

To learn from the experience of hardships of life and how to become resilient from that hardship, how others who were connected to your mom learn and grow from that experience.
