Part 4. The AWD Swap GTI is back on the ground. In this video we cover putting in the rear pan, and getting the gas tank, rear subframe and suspension back up in place. There is still lots more to do but this takes care of the most of the rear of the car. Rear valence, exhaust and charcoal canister will finish up the back half of the swap.

Hey guys, fellow VW lego builder with my mk2 VR. This series and build fills me with many questions. Why would you pay money to swap AWD into a GTI when the mk5 generation has the R32 out there already? I suppose the mk5 R32 didn't come with a factory manual trans option, but it did come with one of the best engines. I guess I'm struggling with how someone could be so married to the mk5 style that they wouldn't be tempted by either an R32, or a new golf R (which is the equivalent of what the owner is building right?) The only question I am certain of is that you guys are an extremely talented bunch and it brings me joy to see you modifying VWs with such expert technique and quality. Thanks for all the hard work in both wrenching and videography!
@COMotorsports
@COMotorsports 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure how I missed this... short answers VR's aren't all they're cracked up to be. They have a poor flowing head, and cost 50% to build. (2 more of everything, injectors, pistons, rods etc). So... that's one main reason. Also some folks just aren't a fan of them, they're extremely nose heavy and without a turbo they're junk in the HP departent. So... there's a ton of answers, plus this car is already making great power to begin with. So abandoning it to buy a slower car with AWD and a DSG that the guy doesn't want... simply doesn't make any sense. VR's are great engines don't get me wrong, but there's a time and a place and this isn't it.
@francakesfordinner
@francakesfordinner 3 жыл бұрын
@@COMotorsports Dropping some truth bombs right there. Never thought about the extra two cylinders increasing price by %50 but that is so true. I guess the only thing a VR has is the exhaust note, which isn't quite as tasty with a turbo in line. Thanks for the perspective! If someone made an aftermarket better flowing VR6 head...that would be interesting.
@COMotorsports
@COMotorsports 3 жыл бұрын
@@francakesfordinner the 3.2 head is much better than the 12v head thats for sure in the flow department. For 4-500whp the r32 engine is great is it just needs a headapacer to safely take the power. So all the right money can be spent on good turbo gear. The 12v can run a spacer also but tuning options become a bit more of an issue for the average person. However making just under 400whp is easily obtainable with a headapacer 12v and a tune. I'm talking turbod of course for others reading. Lol

@@COMotorsports Unfortunate for me I'm in the US so I have 4ish years before the 25 year rule comes into play. But I'm not afraid of inner structure work. After working in the drag fabrication I went on to do collision repair for a number of years.. just a matter of drilling the spot weld and removing what I need from the donor, and welding everything. The part that I'm more concerned about it the mechanical/electrical side of the project. Since I'm not entirely familiar with what components control the Haldex, I might be in over my head from there. But at least I'd get as far as having independent rear suspension.. lol
