Episode #760 Today, we're taking a nice piece of scrap Pecan, and making a sweet little bottle opener! I'm stoked with how this turned out! We freehand carved, power carved, and torched it. I just might keep this one

Cool easy idea. I bet these would sell pretty good. You could even go to bars and sell them to the bar owners. Also, Stubby fully agrees with Ryan... don't drink before you use power tools 😂😂

That looks cool!! Need to figure out a way to add magnets to catch the bottle caps. The power carving and torching really makes it pop. Sorry Eric, I'm a torch fan!!

My Local Home Depot and Lowes normally has some bottle openers on hand in the 5-6 dollar range. You could also add a magnet on the backside to catch the caps. Might be neat to see them pile up in the beer glass.

Howdy Mr. Ryan. Good job. 👍 I'm seeing that you guys are using power carving more and more these days as compared to the years past. I'm glad to see that. It's fun to do. Gives alot more character to just a routed sign. What is the technical term for this type of carving? I'm doing a carving that is a picture of a couple of Fairies 🧚‍♂️ with a mushroom house. Everything has depth to it so it's 3D, foreground, midground, background. Flowers and petals look like you can reach in and pluck them off the "canvas". LOTS and LOTS of under cutting to create shadows. What is this called? I've heard "Relief Carving". I've got 4 weeks in this one carving, about 75-100 hours so far. I'm almost ready for finishing. I'll send yall a few pics when I'm done. Oh yeah...Now, this is just me...but I have shaky hands. I'm sure there's a medical term for it but it's impossible for me to draw a straight line, it looks more like a seismigraph than a line. I drink beer WHILE I work. It settles my nerves and I shake wayy less. Mind you though, I don't get tipsy or drunk. Can't stand that. I just casually sip on it while I work just as someone might sip on coffee. I find it relaxing. But, that's just me. Absolutely, others with low tolerances should wait til they are done. Once I send you this pic, you're probably gonna wonder how I carved such detail with shaky hands. Beer.

Hi Mike, I really don't know all the technical terms to the different kinds of carving. Thanks so much for watching and the feedback. I'm a very simple guy. I'm sure there are some other more technical terms for these. What Ryan did on this is what I call a combination of routing and power carving. Sounds like what you are doing is what I would consider relief carving. We all have our own ways.... I'm looking forward to seeing you finished piece. Thanks again, Eric

That's the beauty of being inspired to make things. Some people like 'finished' edges, some prefer unrefined. Some people like bright colors, some more subdued or natural. Some people like polished, some rustic. Make it your own. 👍

@oldave100

Well, it just depends on the wood. How's the grain, how flat is it, how dry is it, etc. There's a lot of variables to consider. If you send me a picture of what you have, I can give you a better idea whether it's good to use or not. ryan@makeawoodsign.com
