The “husband’s” expression as he begins to realize his wife is descending into TV-dinner madness. Priceless!

Yes, this is great stuff. I mean like WOW. That girl is the star, but don't give her a sharp knife to cut that turkey. It will end up in your back! The "Southern Gothic" tone of the commercial is a spoof of the very popular southern style movies of the 1960s made from Tennessee Williams plays. The antebellum mansion to set the scene, the thunder and lightening, the formal dinner table for aristocratic upper class dinning, the emotionally unhinged out-of-it woman hostess with the "this isn't really happening" - far away look in her eyes and the definite southern accent, all recognizable to an audience back then.

This is Freberg's best. I can watch the housewife's performance a dozen times at a sitting and not tire of it. The quality of the humor and satire far surpasses the nutritional value of the product.

And probably the taste as well. When I was growing up in the 1960s, Banquet frozen dinners were the cheapest and the worst. And they're STILL the cheapest and the worst.

Thank you so much for posting this! I remember this from a T.V. special on hilarious commercials which aired in the early '80's. There were some gut bustingly funny ones featured and this was one of the best. I love the husband's facial expressions as the wife descends into turkey & giblet gravy madness! I had thought that this was supposed to be a parody of a Tennessee Williams play or a Faulkner story. I will have to check out The Oscar as a comparative reference. Many thanks again!

Not only was Stan Freberg a comedic genius, he worked with some fantastic comedic talents during his time, like Paul Frees (best known as the voice of Boris Badenov), June Foray (the voice of Rocky the Squirrel), Helen Kleeb (later known for playing Mamie Baldwin on the Waltons), Marvin Miller (who provided the voice of Robbie the Robot in Forbidden Planet) and Jesse White (the lonely Maytag Repairman), among others. He has yet to be matched as a "pop culture" satirist.
