With Apple's NEW 14" MacBook Pro, is it ACTUALLY worth upgrading the 8-core CPU to the 10-core? And what about the 14-core GPU to 16 cores? We run tests and give you the answer!

With Apple's new 14" MacBook Pro, the base model for $1,999 is now BINNED, which means that you don't get the full 10-core CPU and 16-core GPU, you just get 8 CPU cores and 14 GPU cores.
If you want the FULL unlocked and unbinned M1 Pro chip, you NEED to pay $300 extra for that upgrade.
In this video, we test and compare a BUNCH of benchmarks and real-world tests like Gaming benchmarks, Final Cut Pro video editing, Logic Pro music production, Lightroom Classic photo editing, and more!

After watching lot of comparisons it sounds right... The 14" model is perfect working fully with the basic M1 Pro 8c/14c. If you put the $300 extra for the 10/16 it works still great but maybe you prefer put another $200 extra for the 16" model The 8c/14c was more than enough for me and I prefer the 14" size so I preferred to use the money on improving RAM and SSD

@nissan_skyline
@nissan_skyline Жыл бұрын
@@hottroddinn Lol, I did! I bought the 14 inch MacBook Pro base model. My favorite thing about it was the screen, i's sooooo good. I ended up returning it though and went back to my M1 MacBook Pro 13inch because a new laptop wasn't really a necessity for me at the time, but now my 13 inch M1 is starting to feel sluggish and the battery drains a lot faster, so now I'm ready for an upgrade. I initially had my eyes on the Mac Studio but with the recent announcement of M2 and the completely redesigned MacBook Air dropping next month, I now have my eyes on that lol. I care more about RAM than storage space, so I'm planning to order the base model M2 MacBook Air (in one of the pretty new colors) with 256GB storage and I'll probably upgrade the RAM from 8GB to the max 24GB and the GPU from 8 cores to 10. I would suggest waiting until next month for the M2 devices to drop but if you need a more powerful machine, a maxed out M1 MacBook Pro 14in/16in, or a Mac Studio would probably be the way to go.

Thanks for a great video. I am no expert but I am intrigued by the following issue: CPU performance tests also to a certain extend, are influenced by the RAM performance. I understood that system performance is determined by 3 elements: CPU / GPU cores/speed + RAM capacity + bandwith. In this test you’ve compared 8/14 vs 10/16 cores. In. Another video you’ve compared 16 vs 32 gb which makes sense. But what if in test 1 the benefits from the unbind version are not visible due to RAM limits. Or vice versa, perhaps the 32 machine couldn’t benefit over 16 gb model due to cpu restrictions. It would be interesting to see memory usage when you do the low vs high cores test?

Great point and of course. I know you should probably not use the phrase of course a lot because then that means something else could change. The thing that nobody or hardly anybody talks about that as more software becomes M1 optimized it will only make things better. I’m a graphic designer and adobe has optimized Photoshop illustrator and mostly everything. What they have not optimized is after effects and you can tell because it’s a memory hog and not being optimized with Rosetta it really slows things down. Once they optimize it and I’m sure they will optimize it more over time it might even be us the complete opposite of future proofing. I’ve heard so many of these tech reviewer‘s in the past talk about future proofing. Any Intel world I think that was understandable and quite frankly prudent. In the M1 world I don’t think it is unless you are using it for something crazy. I mean it’s like the argument of like should I get the 14 inch or the 16 inch for $200 more. It all comes down to need. Of course if you can get the bigger screen and you’re not lugging it around all the time with her and Dar. But if you travel a lot and you can use an iPad Pro as a second screen do you really need it

Considering the 14” for graphic design, so for me an extra $200 to get photos exported 20 seconds faster is not worth it. That $200 would be better spent to double the storage to 1tb.

I did get the base 14" m1 pro, honeslty best laptop ive ever had. I was using it and an ipad pro and switched to android so I am selling it and switched to a surface pro 9. The surface pro is probably the best two in one, however its average at being a laptop and average at being a tablet. The two things I miss when compared to the macbook are battery life and the mini led display on the macbook.

Is there much of a different in performance between the 14inch versions when running windows applications through emulation? Just curious because I know you can set process cores used… might be a good selling point for the 10 core vs 8 core 🤷‍♂️

In NL the prices for 512gb 16gb are Base 2250 10c/14c 24780 10c/16c 2520. So the extra upgrade for the two gpu cores is “only” 40 bucks which makes the unbind cpu bind gpu a bit of odd choice

Hey Vadim and Max! This review makes me really think going for the base 14" model would not be a bad decision. Been watching all your review videos for the MBP 2021 and I'm keen to know if there's a RW performance/speed difference between the different SSD sizes specifically 512gb, 1 and 2tb. Haven't seen it in any of your reviews.

Simply, yes there is. The speed of the SSD Apple advertised is the max one on the highest capacity, 8TB.

Thanks for the effort you’re putting into these comparisons. They really help with making informed decisions. I have a couple of questions: while the lower spec’ed models are likely to be more than enough power for most use cases in 2021, will this hold true in 2026 and onwards? Many power users purchasing a MBP today may want to sweat it over five or more years. Will the extra money spent today save money in the future? Thanks again.

@@_amintrouble After a 100 years of consideration, went for 8 Core + 16 + 1TB. 1TB was non-negotiable, but paying almost 20% of the computer price to double the RAM was not worth it... specially considering that it was already stretching the budget.

It’s incredible. Seems like if anyone was even considering the 14” model should just get the base model but with the faster charger because performance differences from unbinned & max chip run really hot and loud. So just makes sense if you are considering more performance to get 16” at that point. Just my opinion, take it or leave it lol.
