Superman not only shot with a Kryptonite bullet, but because he let it guard down around someone who was about to commit suicide, only to turn the bullet on him? Flash making a short-sighted decision to give into a villain’s trap, and turning himself into the bus from Speed? Diana drugged to see everyone as Cheetah, attacking civilians while wearing herself out? Lots of fun twists to the original

I really want to see a Batman story where Bruce is taken out of commission and for whatever reason Alfred has to step up and since he’s not like a vigilante but he was a soldier he straight up just does guerrilla warfare on like the penguin or black masks crime family or something and at the end they’re like “who are you, who’ve destroyed all I’ve built” and Alfred racks a shell and says “I’m just the butler”

Penguin: *fakes his death with a ridiculously circuitous plan to frame Batman* A bunch of absurdly random things happen completely unrelated to him and he just has to wait until his plan is in motion again. Penguin: A robot showed up an took over Gotham, killed Batman but Batman came back and then nightmares were real and Batman was missing for a months and now Catwoman and Batman are doing a civil war.... does anyone remember he murdered me?

This whole arc reminds me "Gotham's Ultimate Criminal Mastermind" episode from The Batman (2004) (Season 3 Episode 13) where the best adaptation of Dr. Hugo Strange makes D.A.V.E.(Digitally Advanced Villain Emulator) which dominates Batman and figures out his identity. I would love if somebody asked Chip Zdarsky if he seen that episode.

"Failsafe pulls out two Kryptonite weapons.. " - and then - What should happen: Superman immediately incinerates the robot from a distance because he has heat vision and can destroy things by merely looking at them and he saw it was a dangerous robot and therefore there was no reason not to. What actually happens: Superman goes in close for no reason so he can get stabbed because this is a Batman book and there is no way Superman could easily solve an issue that Batman can't.. even though he obviously can.

As a Grant Morrison fanboy, I love the return of ZUR Bats. The only part of this story I don’t like is that Failsafe took over Gotham then it just doesn’t matter by the end. Felt unnecessary and made Failsafe even more like D.A.V.E from the 2004 cartoon. The amount of similarities between the two are ridiculous lol

I have heard some really mixed things about Chip Zdarsky’s Batman, but I really enjoyed this arc. It kind of portrays the whole “Bat-God” trope as something negative instead of cool.

Honestly? Screw it, "Bat-God" by Morrison was great specifically because it was then contrasted by his human interaction with other people and how bad in the end of Batman Inc. it got for him and Morrison had full on confidence in showing superheroes being in control and capable of big feats, while everyone post Scott Snyder seems to try to sit on two seats. The fall was so close to classical Batman Morrison, but it's undercut by the rest of the story.

100% agree with you on that. While I do think that Zdarksy’s actual execution is somewhat flawed, I do love that he decided to actually deconstruct the myth of Batman’s “prep time” and how Bruce’s rampant paranoia/obsession with contingencies is actually incredibly unhealthy and harmful - not just for Bruce, but for the people he cares about as well. It’s a genuinely clever concept for a story (in a vacuum completely divorced from all the bullshit editorial decisions of the past several years, anyways), and if nothing else, I have to give it credit for that.

@@greenberry6019 Yeah but that part was cool though (Just kidding, I actually do agree with you that Zdarsky sort of muddles the point he wants to make about Batman’s hyper-preparedness being a bad thing when he makes Batman hyper-prepared enough to survive a fall from orbit somehow. But I still think the core idea of the story is interesting, even if its execution leaves something to be desired.)

I was genuinely interested in the current Batman run up to now, despite it all, but Gotham War is really tanking that interest. I blame editorial more than Zdarsky or even Howard, but the fact remains - there are very few things a comic can do to make me actively stop reading it, and contrived hero-vs-hero stuff where everyone’s angry at everyone for no good reason is definitely one of them. So yeah, I think I’ll wait and see if the book picks up again once the event is over before I consider reading it again. I trust Chip, and I want to support him, but for right now I’m burnt out.

I just got caught up on Zdarsky's first two volumes of Batman, and I feel so mixed about it. I love his work on Daredevil and Spider-Man. With Batman I thought the main story was fine, but I love the backups. That story about the origin of Zur En Arrh was super fascinating, and the tone was gripping. I think I would love his run more if that kind of writing was the center piece.

This about sums up my feelings on this arc (and on all of Chip’s tenure on Batman thus far) as well. As a big fan of Zdarsky’s, this is far from his best work, but as far as Batman stories go, it’s perfectly serviceable, and it certainly didn’t deserve anywhere near the level of scorn I saw it getting at the time it was first coming out. I enjoyed it quite a bit, honestly - it was fun, and that’s basically the bare minimum of what I need to enjoy a comic book, so there you have it, I guess.

I was so very excited for Zdarsky’s run on the Dark Knight, especially since his DD and Spidey work was so good. But besides Jiménez’s excellent artwork, this run has been fairly mediocre and convoluted. The current arc is very mid. I personally want more lower stakes and intimate story from Batman. Not every Bats run has to be this deconstructing and bombastic thing, get back to just simple and clean storytelling.

Listened to this entire episode with a bewildered smile on my face. If the outfit is so durable to survive re-entry, how the hell does Batman remove the trunks??? He uses a laser, but if it can survive the heat of re-entry how does the laser cut it? How is he able to cut the trunks without cutting the suit underneath? Also, the idea that Batman can build a robot that can like easily and decisively beat Superman in seconds twice- even after preparing for the kryptonite- breaks both characters. Super fun episode guys, I haven't been following Batman recently (but I had seen the falling from the moon bit) so this was WILD

Oh Cool! I’ll come back later and watch this but I wanted to say that I Loved the Failsafe Arc. I’ve been enjoying Chips run, the first arc is great, the second one is ok (I did enjoy the 900 issue). I haven’t read past it yet but I’ll catch up. Get back to you guys later!

I remember reading this arc month to month. I did really enjoy this arc(that fall from the moon was absolutely ridiculous though). I fell near the end of the Multiverse arc and then hopped back on after that and now I'm tentatively staying on for Gotham War. We'll see how that goes.
