Corsets. Foot binding. Kylie Jenner Lips. Since the begin of time standards of beauty have been making women go through extreme lengths to be “beautiful.” But that isn’t a thing of the past…in fact, Joanna is here to challenge expectations women are confronted with their whole life.

Graham c You know, some women already feel beautiful in their own skin, but wear makeup or straighten/curl their hair bc they like it and how they look when they do. They like to dress up sometimes, and that is totally fine. I don't know why people assume that girls/boys wear makeup bc they don't feel pretty, i mean yes there are some that actually do it to feel prettier, but there are also some that do it bc they love expressing themselves and their personalities😐

lol really? Grow up! That's what I hate about many Latin Americans. They treat indians/natives like shit, even though many have native DNA. If you hate natives so much just go to Europe or something and don't return. I live in las vegas (a desert) and I hate the heat but I don't care about getting dark. Good looking people look good in dark or light skin. With that being said I hate tan lines. They look so gross.

+El TRI I am actually from Guatemala, which is the second country with the most indigenous people after Peru. Yes, they are sometimes racist against non-indigenous people and are still angry that they were conquered, but trust me, people think that because they are indigenous they are automatically ugly. I know that in Mexico as well as Guatemala and probably every latin american country, being Native means you are either ugly or stupid or both. I heard people say "don't be an Indian!" Instead of saying stupid.... Also, i lost count of the times people have said to me "but you don't look Guatemalan, you're pretty. I thought all Guatemalans were indians (dark, fat and short)." Yes, there is racism all around even in part of the indigenous people, but really think about why they are so angered with us. We have been repressing, discriminating and literally killing them for many many years. Wouldn't that anger you?

I think the expectation should be to be well-groomed. Nothing crazy, just fresh, clean, showered, hair brushed, nails clean, teeth clean. It shows that you care about yourself, and that you have respect for your co-workers and colleagues. I'm a guy and I make sure to always be well-dressed, smelling nice, and groomed. I'm not gonna lie, if I see someone with greasy hair, in pajama pants and Uggs out in public, I'm judging a little. Guy or girl. Dress how you want, wear makeup if you want, don't wear makeup if you don't want to. Just be clean! Boys and girls!

I don't know if this goes for all Latin America but, in Venezuela, straight hair is seen as "clean, professional" and of "better status" than curly hair. I would have to blow dry my hair for job interviews (yes, JOB INTERVIEWS) because, otherwise, I would be seen as unprofessional, which is crazy. It wasn't until I moved to Montreal that I realized that my curls could be a perk. Back in Venezuela, I probably spent thousands of dollars trying to get rid of my curls.

I'm dating someone in her 40s, for a little over 2 years. I'm 24 now and she's always like "I'm so old, I don't know what you saw in me to like me", "I'm feeling so fat right now", "You'll soon break up with me because I'm old and date someone younger instead". Thanks society for ruining my girlfriend's self esteem and making her think this relationship is "too good to be true" for her.

It's not about their self-esteem per say, although this is a thing too. In general, society frowns upon when one of the partners in a relationship is a lot older, so when such relationships do happen, even the partners sometimes, subconsciously feel like they're doing something abnormal. Add to that the general belief that men should be the leader, the provider, etc., and such relationships as yours make people think of the woman as either a predator, or as a "mommy", and of the man as a deadbeat. Interestingly enough, despite the fact that there are a lot of older men dating young women (I'm talking about man being in his 40-60's and woman in her 20-30's), as opposed to older women dating younger men, i can tell for a fact that even they get judged by society. Also, interestingly enough, relationships when there's an age difference of around 15 years between the partners are legally considered pedophilia in some jurisdictions, despite the fact that both partners are of legal age. Go figure. 🤷

+Yuri Teixeira Mendes hahahaha that's stupid. Do you know anything about science? I'm a nurse and my boyfriend is a doctor. Medically, physiologically, anatomically - breasts gain no benefit from being denied gravity. On the contrary, using a bra causes earlier ptosis (sagging). And um.. so... all men are disgusting I guess? Because men generally don't shave so they must all be full of fungus and smell terrible. Wow, the logic -_-
@segueoyuri
@segueoyuri 8 жыл бұрын
"men generally don't shave" well lady, you're probably a nurse from the 40s, right? Lol here in 2016, a lot of guys shave, A LOT. And since you're a nurse and your bf is a doc (good move huh?!) you probably know that something is done with hairs before surgery for a particular reason, isn't that so nursey?! Huh? Enlight us about it, sil vous plait About the bras: I live in Brazil and here we still have a 'large' indigenous population. Most of them never had seen a bra in their lives, think about using one. I would love to see you telling one of those Indian women how in the world her breasts could possibly (sag - using your way to put it) more if they use bras. In my mind, that's the most 'sagged' stage of a boob I've seen in my entire life. You can argue whatever you want, however you like it. It's more than a few living people, living naked 24/7, with the closest bra being more than 200 miles away, with literally flat tits,for hundreds of years now. It's the most valuable thing to science, experience, proving you wrong.

In PR, there's two things that people look for in a girl, Boobs and Ass. I'm a teen, I only HAVE AN ASS. In my school, I'm voted "The ugliest girl" becuase I has a lot of hair on my body, I have a moustache, I have a "unibrow" and braces. I'm bullied for everything I do yet I'm still ugly. People imagine me as an older person. College student to 16 year old. When I'm barely in High School. I have been told I'm overweight but you know what, I simply don't ducking care! I'll loose weight at the time I want, and I'll do anything when I want. Until now, don't rush me nor judge me cause one day, I'm gonna be beautiful and you're gonna be a loner. That's what I think.

Wait, can we talk more about heels? I was talking about heels with a guy once and he thought you just walk in them like you do in normal shoes, and I was like, "no, you have to learn how to walk again." He never knew! It changes your centre of gravity, it changes how you put your foot down on the ground, you can't push yourself forward by lifting up the heel of your foot and pushing with the ball of your foot cuz your heel is already lifted, you have to walk more with your legs as opposed to your foot, you have to walk as if you can't put any pressure on your heels, and if you're on grates or cobblestone or something that's not a flat surface you're fucked. Not to mention unless you're wearing your one magical pair of comfortable heels, you're guaranteeing yourself pain in your feet after you wear them for a while, you get increased chances of bunions, back pain (because heels disrupt your alignment which pulls on muscles connected to the back and also forces you to curve your back), and you get blisters and muscle pain all over. And people wear heels as if they're nothing everyday. I can't take it lol

I would agree that there's more pressure on Latin American women. There seems to be this popular belief that Latinas are all these gorgeous, mystical creatures all with perfect faces, sexy hips, "spicy" personalities, etc. So I imagine Latinas that don't fit that description would feel insane pressure to force themselves to look as good as possible.

Mildred Lyons thats not what i meant tho. im all about being natural, actually, and loving yourself for who you are. what i DO think is stupid is that society decides WHEN it is that certain things are beautiful; it decides WHEN certain ways of looking/physical features are in or out of style. thats why i mentioned when i used to have hairy eyebrows before and the fact that nobody payed attention or bothered wanting to have those because it wasnt trending. however society and/or media has established that NOW hairy eyebrows ''look good'' and are in style. now ppl who a few yrs ago wouldve despised their eyebrows and other ppl who didnt have hairy eyebrows and never longed to have them anyways, are all of a sudden exhibiting their hairy eyebrows with pride and some who lack them even struggle to simulate hairy eyebrows by shading over them (just to fit in), just becuz society/media considers it acceptable and rather beautiful NOW but not a few yrs ago, however. thats what i think is sad, is that ppl try to change the way they look because something is ''IN'', rather than sporting an original look which is not dictated by others, but the fact that they just like it or feel comfortable in it. sorry for the long post ^^" i hope you got to understand my POV better

I feel you didn't go deep enough with Venezuelan beauty standards. You have to doll up just to go out to the grocery store. You can't go anywhere if your nails aren't done. People expect you to wear make-up everyday no matter where you are going. Women are expected to have perfect hair and go to the beauty salon at least once a week to achieve that look. Women undergo all kinds of surgical procedures to make up for whatever nature didn't give them. People will judge you and treat you different if you do not comply with these standards.

You are beautiful how you are! But i agree, it's impossible to look like the "idela" latina. Most pf thos women have plastic surgery, especially in Venezuela, Colombia and Mexico. They are known to be in the top 10 countries with the most plastic surgery and unfortunately that's what we are basing what "latina beauty" should look like. It's funny because looking white is ideal but then the body is modified to look either black or mestiza. We are all fucked with these standards! 😫

I'm Latina and I often feel like I must look tan bc of the image of latino women on media. I often get the comment of "being too pale to be latina" and tbh its just annoying to think I should expose my skin to radiation in order to look "from where I come from" I hate beauty standars... And what about age, I often hear ppl calling old to ppl that's 30 -_-... Like srsly?

I don't like it and feeling pressured to use it or having to feel judged and ugly for this choice completely sucks.

I agree with absolutely everything you had said. The thing with beauty standards is that most of the time we associate them with healthiness. Yet there is a problem when we prioritise beauty over health. I personally do have some beauty standards (which I take in count before wanting to be with someone), yet they all reflect the person's preoccupation for its own appearance, hygiene and (most importantly) health. (by the way, I consider body hair is the most natural thing in the world, so... ) Anyhow. Love your videos, Flama! And I love your interpretation, Joa! Keep it up, guys! I'm fascinated! Greetings from Greater Barcelona, Venezuela.

Maybe photoshop doesn't count as a beauty standard in the same way the things you're talking about in this video do, but I don't think models should be allowed to use photoshop. It's like steroids for pictures and we don't let athletes use steroids. At what point does it stop being about the actual human body? It shouldn't stop being about the actual human body.

In many countries, all around the world, especially latinos and some part of europe, There are Travel agency, which solds "plastic tours" to Argentina.. They organize groups of Womens and mens who want a Plastic Surgery.. In some parts of Buenos Aires is very common to see foreign womens walking with bandaged faces .. And also, the news about a death in a plastic surgery, or malpractice with some of these women and his ""tours"".. Doctors not so doctors.. clinics in houses.. or these stuff.. Some of this "doctors" often went to chile to avoid justice in argentina.. but the womens keep coming for this surgeries..

I like how she said that if you feel confident doing the work to look amazing that's good, but it should be a choice for everyone to decided if they want to do it, and it should be okay that you don't want to do it. Besides, doesn't that make it even more special for the women that are comfortable putting all the work work to look amazing? It wouldn't be like "oh yeah you are exactly how I expect you to look" but more like "wow I finally recognize all those hours you spent learning how to do your hair, and learning how to put make up to make yourself look like a work of art and not a 5 years old drawing, and I finally appreciate all the hours you spent looking for the clothes that make you look your best, and all the practice you had to do to walk on those wheels just right, and all the other shit I can't even think about. Hey, great job, you didn't have to, so good for you for putting your passion into this thing that you care about".

We guys also have a good amount of social pressure on us. You know, to be buff, to have a romcom-level-perfection and whatnot. Luckily, most of us don't care at all haha. In that case, for us, the worst part of living in this shallow narcissistic society is to put up with the anguish of those who do dislike themselves.

Yeah... guys are expected to have a six pac and a nice butt and a cute face (a nice beard included) a strong jaw-line and a long dick. But it's true, guys don't care as much as girls if they don't reach those standards. Most girls are really insecure I guess
@DK-TSTUDIO
@DK-TSTUDIO 8 жыл бұрын
Guys are not "demanded" to have abs and stuff. The fact that we can say "I don't care" without being judged describes how permissive is society about male physical beauty. Is easier to call a girl fugly, even if she isn't that bad looking! But if a guy is ugly... meh, it's Ok. We guys are demanded to be providers and succesful at our jobs, tho.

***** It's not a "man" or a "woman" thing. Machismo is a concept that affects the whole society. Men and women have a specific role. It's obvious that girls have to compete to impress other women physically, because "that's their thing": Appearance. They don't compete for who has the better job or the best car.
@DK-TSTUDIO

***** Stop caring is plain wrong. Yes, the US. and Latinamerica are two different beasts, but we don't have the same issues because our backgrounds and history are different. About the racism, in the US, the majority is white people, and they tend to not mix. Mixing is so rare that they have this thing called "interracial couples" or "birracial people". That is stupid to us, because in Latin America that's the rule: We are mixed. But that doesn't means we don't discriminate. Our racism is about how caucasian you are compared to others. The whiter you are, the better you are. And everybody play that game. If you are more afro and/or amerindian, you are gonna feel inferior and you will want to be whiter. Because being whiter is being succesful, richer, educated, etc... We are both, conqueror and conquered, but we want to be more like the first one. That's how we still say horrible racist jokes and everybody accept them. The reality in the US is different, because they don't mix and think about the other like they were extraterrestial or something like that. The PC stuff was a good idea, it worked well in the 80's. The idea was to respect the other and their differences. But yeah, nowadays it got to ridiculous levels, in were people think just saying the word "race" is racist. They invent any opportunity to get offended because they reinforce the idea of being different and appart from the rest, so you have to be angry and defensive, specially against white people, who were the oppressor. The funny thing? That opened a gate to all the racists in the US, so now they spit on the PC concept and reinforce their bigotry. In every case and reality, ignoring the issue is not the answer. Ignorance is not the answer. We have to be aware to understand a problem and find a solution... To stop making the same mistakes and to treat us in equality.
@DK-TSTUDIO

***** I think both sides are wrong. To the PC side: I like the idea, but that's not the way. You are being obnoxious, have to chill. And to the bigotry side: NO. Just NO. Get the hell out of here.

Exactly. In Cuba they call nappy hair, pelo malo. I was talking with my Cuban boyfriend and he was telling me, yo tengo el pelo malo. And I just did not understand that. I asked him, why do you call your natural hair bad hair? There's no such thing as bad hair. And he was surprised. He told me that he never actually realised that he's saying that he has bad that. That nappy hair is bad hair. I'm African and we do not have these kind of differences so I was really shocked actually. It's quite sad.

i will say the only time i really felt any sort of pressure was the whole shaving your legs thing... but that was only really because i was a competitive swimmer and you actually saw my leg hairs all the time but my mom actually told me not to shave because of the razor bumps and she was mad when i started shaving... now i just like the smoothness ...i question myself a lot because i can honestly say that i don't feel any pressure.. idk if it's because i was literally raised without knowing/or taught anything about any stereotypes or expectations about anything (like actually i didn't know what being a minority was until like late into high school), im from nyc and am seriously desensitized to any sort of ads, OR if it's so engrained that i dont realize the pressure. I think it's a mix of all three plus having the privilege of being surrounded by like-minded people ..sorry about ranting about myself but my point is that I also think your environment also plays a role in how that pressure affects you. Hence i think it's important that we create that type of environment of no gender based judgments for others and future generations.
