In the past things were simple, you spent your whole life in the same place making it much easier to identify where you were from. Fast forward a few generations and the identity question has become more complex than EVER. No one is just from one place anymore, which is a BIG reason why we shouldn’t limit our perceptions of each other. What do you identify with?? Tell us in the comments below!

I was born in Tunisia, but my dad is half Italian and my mum half Turkish / Tunisian so technically I am 50% Tunisian, but I was raised in Switzerland and have the Swiss nationality even tho I have nothing to do with Switzerland (well I am 25% Italian so because there is a part of Switzerland who speak Italian, I guess I have something to do with Switzerland),but I used to live in the francophone part of Switzerland, but I live in the Netherlands now. Oh and also I am an atheist, but half of my family is muslim and the other half are catholic, jews and atheist. So yes, when people ask me what I am, I just say : Swiss - Tunisian. We can ser that we have a lot of Black People living in Bahia state and a lot of White peole in south but it's a historical matter, back in the past The northeast region was The ritchiest and was the slavery age so there are more Black People here, later we see The change of slavery to work as we have today and People move from another countries like Germany, Japan, then we are mixed but still with "racial gettos" but they are realy far from what exist in USA, here we hang out with other People, we say anything about each other, of course we have some rules about how to behave but it's cool. Sorry my english, I'm learning 😃

What he means to say is, we don't keep track of our heritage. I don't know anyone here who knows what fraction of what race they have. Race here is only related to color, light skinned people wouldn't say they're black even if their grandparents were and vice-versa. Which shows how this race talk is just huge bullshit we humans keep insisting on.

true true, I grew up in latinamerica, I was subtly/not so subtly taught there is not such thing as a "half-latino" because culturally it means "mixed" (mestizo). Ergo, being latino is our true identity as in we have multiple backgrounds and we acknowledged them through our history, dance, food, music...

I did a DNA test 2 months ago that said I'm 4% European Jewish, as well as 2% West African. The last part was the only surprising thing to find out. @BurnRoddy
@BurnRoddy 8 жыл бұрын
Maybe because heritage is very subjective it's part of a journey of discovery. The whole Something-Something thing is kind of dull if you think about it. The people who shape your perception of things and the world around you are your family and your peers. that perception changes with every new generation even WITHOUT migration so ultimately what keeps communities glued together is national law. IE instead of calling someone Mexican-American which is a word that makes no sense call that person American of Mexican heritage or Mexican living under American law. That would make things much easier for everyone. Now I'm Uruguayan so let's take Afro-Uruguayo for example. They call themselves afro-something just because they are black, skin color doesn't translates to culture. Not to mention it's a vague definition because it doesn't even mention the region of Africa where the person's ancestry came from. My former girlfriend is black and she saw herself as a black, never associating her identity with her skin color. Being part native myself, I never got the whole Something-Something thing. I'm Uruguayo or Oriental and that's it. The rest of it, my ethnicity, is in a sense equally important because is just the past, not what I am today. I'm not the same person I was a day ago, not even a minute ago, let alone being the same forever. I feel equally connected to my Italian roots than to my native blood even though I also have Spanish, Portuguese and French-Basque heritage but if I had to define my ancestry I'd do so like Trump does and say I'm of Charruan ancestry. That's because there's little people with Charruan blood in Uruguay and that's what stands out about my past, kind of like a shortcut, but it ain't something that defines my identity, as if I should call myself Charrua-Uruguayo. No, I'm Oriental or Uruguayo, my fiends and family sum up my identity but even that doesn't define me as a person, what ultimately defines us are our actions. That's the reason why many Latin people say they are from some place or the other it's their short cuts.

I'm learning Spanish and more about my roots. When I found out that my family came from Spain, I was very excited. It stinks to not have anything to celebrate. No culture. The only culture there is in American society is what your family brings with them and I never had that. Thank you for teaching me more about what I wish I was raised with the whole time.

I'm so damn tired of white and black Americans claiming to have native ancestry when it's usually under 5% while the vast majority of Latinos are anywhere from 25-100% indigenous and you don't hear any of us talking about it. I'm a proud Ecuadorian and I am very proud to be a quarter indigenous Ecuadorian genetically and I am very proud to have a grandfather who speaks Quechua! Latinos need to stand up and start being proud of our indigenous American heritage not only because of the fact that it makes up a big part of our genetic makeup but also because of how much influence our indigenous ancestors had on our cultures! it's the food we eat the way we speak our indigenous roots are a part of who we are SPEAK UP SEAS ORGULLOSO MI GENTE

Reading between the lines, I see that you have preference for your presumed European ancestry and disregard for your possible native ancestry. Most "Latinos/Hispanics" consider that label to be an honor. Not when others label us as such but when we embrace our culture. It is separate from race as there can also be Arab and Asian Latinos who have none of the typical triracial heritage. You can do a DNA test. You may actually find out that you are 100% European. Some Chileans are!

I identify as Caribbean-American, Haitian-American, Dominican-American, Latina-American, Hispanic-American, Afro-Caribbean, and Afro-Hispanic. I'm from Massachusetts but I live in New York in a mainly Italian Jewish neighborhood. My mother is Haitian, but her father was born in Cuba to a Haitian father and Cuban mother. My father was born in the Dominican Republic and so was his mother (who I called Abuela), but his father was Haitian. My dad's maternal grandmother was Puerto Rican with a Cuban husband. Both of them were mestizos, but my grandmother and some of her seven siblings had dark skin. Because I'm from Boston, I spend more time with my mother's Christian Haitian family. Both of my parents speak Spanish and French, so one brother and I speak French and no Spanish, but my other two brothers speak Spanish and no French. But we all know Haitian Creole. The majority of black people I speak to are people I know from church, and in addition to being Haitian, they are Jamaican, Brazilian, Angolan, Trinidadian, and Vincentian. Most of my Latino friends are Dominican, Cuban, Salvadorian, Colombian, and Puerto Rican.

In my humble opinion, I think that there's no sense to say that you're half sweeden (for example) from your grandmother's side although you don't have any idea about that culture and then present yourself as such in a spontaneous conversation. That is to say, if you're in contact with your sweeden roots it's more logical to mention it because this fact directly affects in your life, in other words, it's important because it's a part of you. And apologize my English, I'm learning!

soooo there is a difference between - your race (skin colour) - your nationality (country of origin and/or citizenship) - your culture (family, tradition, community, etc.) - your background (combination of the race, nationality and culture of your parents and their parents and so on). - your personal identity (whichever of these/combo of these factors you most identify with and have become part of your personality) Humans are complicated which is why it makes no sense to categorise them with 1 racialised term. oh, and there's also your religion

I have Inca ancestors, as well as a black great great great grandmother from the Caribbean and a bit of white European thrown in the mix. I think that is why I have an almost compulsion to keep moving cities (sometimes even countries or continents) about once a year.

I'm sure you have some Native. We Americans are obsessed with our Ancestors.

Being pale is not evidence that you are not Native. Phenotype does not indicate genotype perfectly. The USA seems to be more obsessed with race than other countries but in reality, the other countries are equally obsessed and have equally disturbing views. They just have fewer racial groups to "label" and a less volatile racial history.

+Natanya Tavares i dont think that, every country had European, Asian, african (etc) inmigration... Argentina suffered racial massacres, but if you ask me how many native people you date, i couldn't tell you cos i have never classificate my dates by race or ask them where ere they from... just dont care. I mean, i think that doing this tipes of videos is discriminating our self by label us. 'I am latina' 'I am African-American'... I'm just a human that happens to be born in a territory named Argentina... And happen to have green eyes and pale skin.

Ayelen Borba I know. I was just saying that Green Eyes and pale skin are present in people with African, Asian, Arab, etc ancestry. The appearance does not indicate the "racial" mixture. That is all I was saying. I agree that we should move away from racial categories.

I'm ethnically Mexican, but I was born in the U.S., and people think I'm Asian or "white" or Middle Eastern or Spanish....You know, the list keeps going! I'm a native Spanish and English speaker, but I can also speak Portuguese and am working on my Arabic. I've always seen myself as just a human. As I was growing up, of course, I learned about what ethnicity I identified as. When I found out that I was Mexican, I was not happy because "Mexican" has always carried and continues to carry a negative connotation, and racism, prejudice, and discrimination has always been present; however, I've learned to embrace being Mexican and quite sincerely, I often don't consider myself Mexican but just human. I love to experience different cultures, different religions, different languages, etc., and I love treating anyone like my family.
