You're the first reactor I've seen who picked up on the SUX joke. This movie is so great. First time I've seen it was about 30 years ago when I was 10 or 11 years old. It was a great action movie, and the first real gore and excessive violence I saw. Now, as a 40-year old pastor, I pick up so much more of the social satire, the religious references and the great (sarcastic) story telling of this movie. Thanks for doing RoboCop. Hello, this is a non-native English speaker here talking, but I do have extensive experience in studying it, so here goes: many of the short-hand versions of names come from slightly modified versions of the original name. So for Richard, you get Rick -> Dick, Robert gets Rob -> Bob, William gets from Will to Bill etc.

The 6000 SUX and the comedian on tv "I'd buy that for a $1" joke were great little comedy gems in this action movie.

Great reaction! The toxic waste death always creeped me out. The makeup was so well done and then the whole "splatting" death was just insane. I don't think I'd ever seen anything like it before. Now that you've seen Robocop you'll have to watch the sequel. It's even nuttier than the first one. While Robocop wasn't exactly a serious movie, the sequel isn't even trying to be serious half the time but the extreme cheesiness is what makes it so good.

I watched this recently, it's a classic. I remember seeing it with my family as a kid. It was mind blowing at that time. RoboCop was everywhere. I loved the arcade game too.

The 1980s a time when they made kid cartoons based on R Rated films lol Yes there's actually a Robocop cartoon aimed towards kids. Instead of firearms there's laser weapons which was the normal for the time with TMNT, Transformers, BraveStarr, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and G.I. Joe all featuring laser weapons. Going into the 1990s as well with the Marvel cartoons like Spider-Man, X-Men, Iron Man etc all had zero "real firearms". So it's funny watching this film with all it's violence and firearms and then seeing the more tame cartoon. Only non Rated R cartoons from the 1980s to 2000s I can think of what had actual guns is Batman: Animated Series from the 1990s while Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League set in the same continuity as Batman: Animated Series had laser guns. Interesting to see how get away with censorship and fit it into the story. Robocop cartoon maybe it's more logical to use laser based weapons on Robocop so maybe that's the in show reason. But yeah ever since Robocop 2 the studios pushed more into the toy line so even though the first film was very mature the higher up gives in suits wanted to still sell toys to younger kids who of course saw Robocop and thought he looked cool. I don't think they'd get away with that today even in 1992 with Batman Returns with WB getting upset with how mature and bloody Tim Burton made the film. To WB it effected partnerships with McDonalds who were selling Batman Returns Toys so to have McDonalds linked to a pretty dark movie may cause controversy.

The style of filming for Ed-209 (ED = Enforcement Droid) is called "stop motion". They have an actual prop like a over-sized doll or a robot in this case, they move it slightly, take a frame of it, then move it ever so slightly again, take another frame, and so on. This way you can create the illusion of motion. In fact, literally the old fashion film cameras took a lot of still pictures and when you play them fast enough (human eye can only detect a certain frequency of images), it all looks like a live action movie, with constant motion.

This movie and the Original Star Wars fro 1977, are the only movies that I know where people stood in line to see it. Then came out after it was done and stood back in line to see it again.

Blaupunkt was the hot German made car stereo back in the 80's. Also consider this movie was made in '87 James. The Ford Taurus was only out for 1 year at the time the most futuristic lookind car on the market then,so this movie is a vision of the future (2043) from an 80's perspective. It pencils out if you keep that in mind.😮

"Regular cop cars...so we're not TOO far in the future." LOL at the time, we were still using the big boxy police cruiser, of the type often featured in The Dukes of Hazzard! I remember when years later i saw one of the new ones, thinking 'That thing looks right out of Robocop!' I really think its another case of life imitating art.

Classic reunion tower in the chase When he drives out of the lot, he still scrapes the back of the car. I grew up just miles from the exploding gas station. They left notes for everyone about when to expect it. Dallas doesn't get a lot of films. The OCP offices are Dallas City Hall with imposed extra stories. The female news anchor was on ABC Dallas news for decades.

There were toys for this movie and even a cartoon series was made. The Toys didn't come out until around the second film, and the cartoon was even later, but it's pretty crazy how children's toys would be made for R rated films. RoboCop came from the failure to make a Judge Dredd film. The studio had not yet worked on a full screenplay but they were attempting to get the rights for Judge Dredd, and when that all fell through, stuff started getting worked on to move the film in an original direction. Paul Verhoeven got attached later to the film as director, and made even more changes, adding in the various touches he later became known for. Much of the film was shot in Dallas, Texas with a few scenes in Detroit. Apparently it wasn't safe enough to film in Detroit for the entirety of the movie, and Dallas has a few buildings that are similar to buildings in Detroit.

The Future Of Law Enforcement. Before Peter Weller was cast as ROBOCOP, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Armand Assante, Michael Ironside, Rutger Hauer, Sylvester Stallone, and Tom Berenger were considered for the part. Schwarzenegger turned it down as he might look bulky in the suit. Weller was cast as he had a much slimmer frame. Weller lost 3 lbs a day from wearing the suit, and couldn't eat any solid food except for Ice cream, oatmeal and yogurt. He would have a protein shake during his lunch period. It was 110 in Dallas, Texas where they were filming and the FX team put an air conditioner in the suit to prevent Weller from passing out. The stop motion animation effects were done by Oscar Winning VFX artist Phil Tippett, whom did VFX work for Star Wars, RoboCop 2 and 3,JURASSIC PARK, and Starship Troopers. It won the Oscar for Best Sound Editing. It made $60 million dollars against a $13 million dollar budget.

The Paul Verhoven films all make social comemtaries while being super over the top action. So much fun. Starship Troopers and Total Recall(with Swartzenigger) are the other standouts from him.

They actually did explain how he eats, the scene where Johnson says “it tastes like baby food.” That’s why Lewis brought him the actual baby food near the end, too. Hope you’ll watch the sequel sometime, you’ll probably have fun with it.

Back in the 1970s-80s-early 90s, there was a major spike in urban crime and violent crime across the United States as a whole, which had been steadily on the rise since the 50s, and common knowledge seemed to be that as population density increased and cities continued to get bigger and new drugs were introduced and new weapons invented etc etc... that the situation was only going to get worse. And so... during this period there were a lot of science fiction dystopian movies made about a bleak future full of gigantic mega cities that were super polluted, over-crowded, and rife with violent crime... that's when we got stories and movies like Robocop, Escape from New York, Demolition Man, Predator 2, Judge Dredd, Akira, Blade Runner, etc. etc... Of course, they were wrong... birth rates in the US plateaued then started to drop like in all developed countries. Our population only continues to grow today thanks to immigration. Many cities in the US are actually less population dense today than they were in the 90s or early 2000s due to people continuing to move to suburbs and outlying areas. Thanks to the EPA and legislation like the Clean Air Act, pollution levels in most places around the USA are the lowest they've been since the Industrial Revolution. And the only people who think that crime in US cities is a major problem or a problem on the rise are viewers of the Faux News Propaganda channel... who believe it as a required article of faith among their political tribe, even while violent crime rates in most major American cities are at near century-long lows and the only places where it is currently a serious problem on the rise are in cities in the midwest, Appalachia, and around the rust belt, mostly, driven by unemployment and opioids. But it's fun to look back at what people in the past saw when they were trying to look forward...

Yea Heart, part of the Lungs, and not nearly as much of the brain as you would think. That's all that was left of Alex Murphy. The face was stretched over a robotic skull to make him a bit more personable. But thanks to neural plasticity, he ended up retaining some of his previous self. But he is definitely not Alex Murphy any more.

Fun fact, because of how the robocop costume was, either because of it being too bulky or poor articulation, when ever you see him driving a car he has no pants on

I've written thesis on this movie. Verhoeven, Miner and Neumeier were prophetic. There's a lot more to this movie than just action and gore.

I first watched this when I was 7 and the toxic waste scene scared the hell out of me as a kid.

The setting of Robocop depends on where you search. From this film all we know that it's set in a near-future dystopia, Detroit set across four months which we see parts of in this film. A novel states that the movie is set in the year 2043 and 2044 while the arcade game of Robocop states that the film is set in 1990 a few years after the release of the film. And then you have a new MGM digital streaming trailer that states that Murphy was killed on October 24th, 2029 and rebuilt and activated on January 14th, 2030 when most of the film takes place. So it just depends as Ed Neumeier the writer of Robocop never gave a year of when the film was set. There is a Robocop game coming out as well so I wonder what year they'll go with maybe one of these above or a whole new year. Personally as Robocop still has a very 1980s look and feel I'd say the film is set in a more advanced 1990s where they still have a retro art direction but they've developed more advanced tech in robotics and other fields.

In the 70's Chevy made a very popular car in the US call the Nova. When they took the brand to Mexico it did not sell very well. Then they realized what that No Va in Spanish meant.

"Step away from the vehicle... you have 10 seconds to comply.. growl". I was also always curious about the shortening of RIchard, and happen to be messing with AI in another window. According to that, it is based on an old tendency to shorten names to end with 'ick'. I asked why not Rick, it answered that both are acceptable, but D*ck is more traditional. There was no reason for the tradition, but the first recorded use was King Richard I. Asked if there were any other reasons in that specific instance for D*ck instead of Rick, and it said there was none. Interesting!

The events in the first movie were supposed to take place in the the 2040's. The remake is supposed to take place starting in 2028. Not so sure why the remake made the time frame much earlier.

In Spanish speaking countries they got a kick out of the Chevy Nova. In Spanish No va means "no go".

Verhoeven films are fascinating because you can watch them just for pure entertainment ... but then go back and watch for the social satire messaging. Some aremore heavy handed than others. Starship Troopers vs Basic Instinct ... but all equally entertaining.

I remember liking this movie when it was new and I saw it. Recently watching reactions I was shocked at the graphic violence because I remembered the plot and characters abut not that it was so gory. It is definitely a SiFi classic.

The 6000 SUX was a jab at the cars of the 70s. Many of there were huge and got 10 to 12 miles per gallon combined mileage, provided it was tuned and lightly loaded.

If you look at the car's name again, 6000 SUX, the font makes the number 6000 resemble the word GOOD, making it look like it says GOOD SUX. Lots of anti-authoritarian satire here. At the time, people didn't get the satire, even critics. When later Verhoeven made Starship Troopers, he made the satire ridiculously over the top, full authoritarian stereotypes, ridiculous violence, and super-manipulative propaganda. Still nobody got the satire, not critics, not indie folks, not activists. He was baffled, because he thought he'd been incredibly heavy-handed. The satire always seemed obvious to me.

Great Movie. The sequels are really bad and there was a remake that was decent. You know that it took allot of takes for the scene where Robocop catches the key. Also Paul Verhoeven which is the director of the movie is the guy who catches the gun in the club and also the guy who scream in the car commercial. Other great Paul Verhoeven movies are Total Recall , Starship Troopers, Hallow Man. Fyi the secretary of Dick Jones is the actual wife of the bad guy Clarence :) . Other great robot movies are Short Circuit (1 and 2) and Bicentennial Man. Also kind movie with a robot or at least AI is Flight Of The Navigator 1986.

Yes it's supposed to be slightly in the future, maybe 10-15 years. Clarence plays Bob a DVD of Dick Jones talking...that was 10 years before DVDs existed.

I remember there was a bit of fuss over the scene where the ED-209 shoots the young executive into hamburger. Roger Ebert wrote something about how if you just keep shooting and shooting and SHOOTING him, the violence crosses over into absurdity and it isn't upsetting, what today is called the Refuge in Audacity trope. I never even considered watching That '70s Show because of this movie (and also Dead Poets Society).

Robocop doesn't need to personally arrest a person. He uploads the data to the Police Headquarters and they respond. As far as Boddiker is concerned he wanted to take him in himself.
